Soma Schicksal is the eighteen year old half-Aragami of the first unit Retaliation Team and the son of Johannes and Aisha Gauche. He was the very first God Eater and had been fighting on the front lines since he was twelve but did not officially join the Fenrir Far East Branch until 2064. His God Arc boasts an exceedingly high compatibility rate along with a much larger strength capacity than other team members which gives him semi-unstable abilities not seen within other Gods Eaters. Soma was the test subject for the Managarm Project experiment in which he was administered the P73 version of the Bias Factor before he was born. The experiment failed and resulted in the death of his mother but the foundation for God Arc technology was built from studying Soma himself. Because of this experiment Soma was born with a bias factor embedded in his cells so unlike other Gods Eaters he is able to produce his own bias factor. Despite there being no need for him to manually inject himself with bias factor he still wears an armlet.
Because of his enhanced strength, hearing, and unnatural healing abilities he views himself more as a “monster” than a human and is reluctant to tell others that he is part Aragami. Soma hides that he feels singled out and is severely bothered by the things others say behind his back. This has led to him often acting alone, frequently breaking rules, and to his anti-social taciturn attitude. Soma resents his father for using him in the Managarm Project and warns others to be distrustful of him. Initially Soma despised Shio because she was an Aragami in the form of a human and validated his feelings of being a “monster”. He slowly built a bond with Shio as he started to see her as one of the few things he has something in common with and everyone else as “pathetic”.
He tried to keep Shio away from his father and helped to thwart the Ark Project by killing his father after Shio was taken. He was forced to devour Shio’s core which turned his God Arc white, freed Shio, and prevented the destruction of the world. His time with Shio left him feeling more socially accepted, hospitable, and more willing to hang out with others. He rarely goes off on his own anymore or breaks rules and was slated to be promoted to Unit Leader but wished to remain a member of the first unit likely due to his view that “a leader is a fool who shares everyone’s burden”. He has become well trusted by all God Eaters of the Far East Branch and all teams he has joined on missions have seen dramatic drops in casualty rates.
