As the day progresses, the trees begin to thin out, the terrain overtaken by increasingly steep slopes and rocky terrain as the trail climbs into the mountain passes.

Fortunately, it's summer, and while the little streams of snow-pack melt are icy cold, they are clear and refeshing. Even at noon when the party stops to eat, a chill is in the air, but there are green plants bursting out of the frost covered ground.

Torch's map has the group avoiding the taller mountains by quite a ways. As the group winds through the lower trails, glancing at the high peaks with their clouds and glaciers makes one wonder what they are avoiding, and what treasure might wait in the high peaks.

As the group continues to climb up the wagon-wide trail, the temperature continues to drop, and the frost covering turns into several inches of snow, and late in the afternoon, the road is covered in about 6 inches of snow, with many drifts of 6 to 10 feet high forcing the group to wind their way carefully.

The daylight and activity keeps the group warm as they walk, and the sun reflects cheerily off the clean snow. It is clear, though, that when the sun sets, the cold will be brutal.

Finally, as the sun is setting and the wind begins to rise, the group reaches a fairly level section of the trail--a bit easier for camping.

It doesn't take long to notice a covered wagon off on the side of the trail, wedged against the rising hillside, and half-buried in a snow drift.

Rees, bundled in his winter gear, still looks cold, and nervously asks "What now?"

Daggert, subdued through much of the days chilly walk, perks up at sight of the covered wagon.

Oi! See that wagon there, perhaps we can take a bit of refuge there for the night, sure would beat camping in the snow.

He looks hopefully around at the others.

Flinder curses softly not thinking about bringing a shovel and sets to work by using his hands. The cold is soon sending shivers down his spine and his fingers feel numb, but as long as he can take it, he continues.

Continuing to work, the group finds the wind getting colder as the sun begins to set. There is only about 15 minutes of daylight left when the top part of the covered wagon and its entrance is revealed.

The wagon is vibrantly colored but has begun to fade from prolonged exposure on the mountains. It is a hard-sided, hard topped wagon, with a small door allowing access from the back, and another small door to the driver seat.

Inside the group finds three frozen people--two men and one woman, whose bodies are huddled together, frozen solid.

Looking around the wagon, if the frozen people are removed, it could easily hold five people and their gear. There is a small wood-burning stove in the wagon, as well.

Daggert slings his shield back over his shoulder after using it as a shovel. Poor souls, looks like they got caught in a bad one out here. We might as well take them out of here as they've no need for the heat anymore. Come on then.

Grabbing the first man by the torso, Daggert hauls him out of the wagon and gently lays him into the snow. Saying a quick prayer, he then moves to grab the other two.

We can build a cairn in the morning if we can find any stones, or at least we can wrap them in a few blankets and bury them beneath the snow. Tis no worse a resting place than the wagon.

Examining the bodies, it is clear they came from Absalom and were returning home. Lacking identity papers, it isn't clear who they were or whether they were good people.

It looks like their wagon got stuck, and they froze during a storm.

Once the bodies are clear of the wagon, Daggert will start a fire and take his time searching the interior for anything useful.

I'll take first watch again if no one minds?

Take 20 to search the wagon.

There is a good stock of wood for the fire and blankets. No real treasure to speak of. Though carefully hidden in a floorboard is a trade receipt, indicating the family name in Absalom's foreign quarter.

Warmth fills the little wagon as the sun sets and the icy wind tries to scrabble into the cracks. But, with the cheery stove, plus the five companions well bundled, the chill is not oppressive at all, even with frost forming on the edges of the wagon doors.

Anyone staying outside?

Staying outside for an hour is doable--after that Daggert finds it begins to cause serious damage. One hour out and one hour in is about the best the group can do without hurting themselves.

After a long night in the wagon, the sunlight abruptly bursts through the cracks in the wagon, and the wind dies off.

Shortly, the temperature starts to rise to a comfortable level, and the mountains spring back to life.

The group breaks camp, and prepares to depart on the second day of their mountain trek.

anyone doing anything before hitting the trail?

Flinder gets out early. He almost cannot resist the snow in combination with his childhood memories. He would love to make a snow angel, but with those poor dead people it would hardly be fitting.

He looks for the shovel and tries to see if he is able to dig a grave.

Flinder finds the ground tough at first, but quite easy to turn further down. In a short period of time, he's dug a decent shallow grave for the stranded travelers.

Coming out of the cabin late, Daggert sees his fellow halfling hard at work. Flinder! Let me spell you off a minute, no need to do it all yourself... though it looks as though you're pretty much finished.

As they place the travelers in the grave, Daggert stands over them and says a few words to Iomedae, wishing them safe passage and travels wherever their spirits may fly.

As they pack up, Daggert gazes longingly at the wagon. It's a shame we can bring it along with us. Sure beats camping out in the cold.

The morning is well-on by the time the group finishes properly burying the frozen travelers.

Heading down the road, and feeling a bit somber as they go, the group spends sevearl hours winding through high passes, hopping over small streams, crossing rock falls, and generally staying on the map's trail.

In the early afternoon, as the group wanders on, they can see that the mountains will be coming to an end soon, and they begin to get glimpses of a vast swamp below, stretching off into the horizon.

Looking around, several of the group sees a glint of precious metal off a stray sunbeam, coming from a spot further up the mountainside. It would take climbing up a 50 ft cliff to satisfy their curiosity, however...

Seeing Celestin's dubious look Daggert nods. Not much of a climber myself really, but I'll give it a shot. Leave no stone unturned!

Setting down his shield and climbing out of his chain shirt, Daggert begins to ascend the slope.

Working carefully, Daggert moves slowly up the slope. Having to haul himself along several times by just his hands, he finally makes his way up to the ledge where the gleam came from.

Daggert sees the source of the gleaming metal immediately. A small stone statue of a woman with a large sword and adventuring gear is protected by a small roof and rotting wooden panels. At the base of this modest shrine sits a number of coins and gems in the shrine’s offering bowl.

Gazing dumbfounded for a moment, Daggert realizes that this must be a shrine of some sort! Could it even be a shrine to Iomedae? Daggert failed miserably at his religion classes, and honestly has no idea. He feels the strength of Iomedae in his soul, but never paid much attention to how she was represented.

Digging in his pocket for a few gold coins, Daggert carefully places a few coins into the offering bowl, and murmurs a prayer to Iomedae.

Leaning over the edge, Daggert calls down to the others. It's a shrine! What luck to find a place of peace and blessing out here in the wilds! Anyone else want to come up and see?

Célestin tries to climb up.

Climb 1d20-2 = (19) - 2 = 17

And at his big surprise, he manages to reach the ledge.

Like Daggert, he puts a coin at the base of the shrine and addresses a quick prayer to Shelyn.

Thank you for your numerous trials, Goddess of beauty, and for allowing me to test and push back my own limits.

Then with this being done, he goes back down.
