Another day dawns for our adventurers, as they rise once again in the Pathfinder Society home of Absalom. A bit of a gloomy day, actually, with rain and distant thunder punctuating the group's footsteps as they hurry from their rooms over to the building where their morning appointment waits.

Passing many other people hurrying on their way to places unknown, scholars holding bundles of scrolls, pack animals braying as they get rained on while hauling wagons loaded with supplies, the group gets to the buildling.

A tall, granite structure built over generations, it's another fine example of why the Pathfinder Society and their city-in-a-city is well regarded by most of the population of Absalom.

Heading inside and down a few halls, taking a moment to wipe off the excess rainwater, the group finds itself in the heart of the Pathfinder Society’s headquarters.

Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng, a wiry old man with a wild gray beard and glinting eyes, sits on a large plush bench next to a finely dressed, full-figured woman who looks as though this entire meeting isn’t worth her time.

VC Dreng smiles warmly at the party, and introduces Lady Gloriana Morilla. The woman tilts her head slightly in acknowledgement of
the introduction, but otherwise makes no move to greet anyone. It's clear to see she either thinks Pathfinders are beneath her, or that most people in general are well below her social standing.

Drandle Dreng either fails to notice or chooses not to notice her attitude, and launches into his speech:

"Recently, a contact from the Low Azlanti embassy in Escadar approached us with an offer. It seems they have discovered a unique relic of Azlanti origin on the Inner Sea’s floor that we have a unique opportunity to add to our collection for study.

In return, however, we must deliver one of our catalogued items to Escadar in exchange. The Low Azlanti drive a hard bargain, so we need you to escort a relics broker to Escadar so he can authenticate the Azlanti item and mediate a fair deal on the Ten’s behalf.

Now, there are a few other things you should know...you are not the
only group that looks to acquire this relic. It seems the Aspis Consortium has also tendered an offer, and the gillmen have decided to accept the Consortium’s deal if we cannot finalize its agreement within 30 days.

Also, an Aspis-funded warship patrols the waters just beyond the harbor, which will make it impossible to sail to Escadar without a naval battle. However..."

At this, Lady Morilla cuts him off:

"I have used some of the Empire of Taldor’s most skilled operatives
to plant a false crew manifest and course plans with the harbormaster, ensuring that the Aspis Consortium spies who certainly keep an eye on
such matters believe we are moving our relic to Escadar on a ship tomorrow morning. This decoy should occupy the Consortium sufficiently for you to travel overland to Escadar with plenty of time to make the final agreement with the gillmen before the Society’s window of opportunity runs out.”

Dreng laughs to himself absently, then speaks again:

"Go to the Siphons in the Puddles district and meet with the Pathfinder Society’s ally, information broker Grandmaster Torch. He’s to give you a map for a smugglers’ trail through the isle’s center that should allow for relatively easy and secret travel overland to Escadar.

"Also, you should know that the Society has hired an appraiser and relics broker named Nester Rees to verify the authenticity of the gillmen’s relic--I haven't seen him around yet, but I expect he'll find you before you are ready to leave. He's a reliable appraiser who frequently works with the Society--if he says the artifact is real, then it is. He's not an adventurer, though--please take good care of him on the trip. If anything happens, he'll need protecting.

"I've arranged lodings for you in Escadar, at a tavern called the Grindylow's Goblet--which happens to be the place you'll be meeting the gillmen.

"Now, any questions for us?"

Recalling lectures during training...

The city of Escadar is on the isle of Erran, which is just north of the Isle of Kortos, where Absalom is. Absalom actually owns both islands, and keeps a second fleet there for times of war.

The gillmen are descendants of ancient Azlant, a long-gone civilization that has largely vanished over time. The rare existing Azlanti ruins that remain today are looted, carefully guarded, or lost deep in the ocean.

One of the few ruins left in the Inner Sea rests on the Isle of Erran, in the city of Escadar. The ruin is populated by the Low Azlanti--humanoids who have gills on their necks and are comfortable living on land or under the sea.

The people are not any more good or evil than anyone else.

As the party exits the area and begins to head for the seedy Puddle district, Lady Gloriana also leaves, mentioning she has other business to attend to.

On the way out, she brushes past Merisel and subtly pushes a note into her hand on her way by. Her face gives no indication of having done anything, and she gets in her carriage without a backward glace.

Looking at the note as the party winds through the streets, Merisel sees:

Assuming the group continues on to the Puddles...

Grandmaster Torch, the mysterious information broker, ex-Pathfinder, and leader of the Shadow Lodge faction of the Society, operates out of a network of subterranean tunnels beneath the water-logged Absalom district of the Puddles.

Finding the Siphons requires no special skill, but does require passing down into the Puddles’ rough-and-tumble, flooded streets and into the sewers below.

Once there, and following directions from the Pathfinder Society, the group makes their way through the dank and dripping sewers to a complex of dank and dripping rooms guarded by half-orcs.

A gruff half-orc guard grants the group entry into Torch’s audience chamber in the Siphons, a large stone room that has been magically rid of all standing water or even airborne moisture. Torch, a dark-haired, burn-covered man in his late-middle years sits in a large bathtub, his two attendants continually pour cool water over his festering wounds. His half-orc bodyguards eye the the group carefully as the Grandmaster rises to greet them, putting on a robe and speaks:

"Well met, Pathfinders. I see you have survived as the Decemvirate’s pawns thus far, and for that I commend you. This next task they have for you is more dangerous than the venture-captain may have told you, so let me give you a word of warning. I have made it my life’s work to ensure Pathfinder agents are given all the tools they need to return home from their myriad adventures, and this map is the tool I give you. Follow the directions on my map as strictly as you can. Deviate from this path and you may encounter challenges far beyond your abilities. Many would paint me and those who believe like I do as betrayers of the Society, but it is the corps of the organization that I am completely loyal to. Each and every one of you.

“If you believe you have been mistreated by the Ten or their representatives, don’t hesitate to let me know upon your return from Escadar. My network of agents and spies if vast, and I am a powerful ally to have on your side.

”Now be off. You have a long journey ahead of you. And remember, don’t deviate from this map-it’s designed to get you there and back safely!"

Grandmaster, that seems like simple enough advice. None of us have traveled through the island before, and are unfamiliar with it. Are there any dangers in particular you can warn us of? Anything we should be particularly worried of encountering?

Flinder is getting more worried by the minute. All that talk about dangers. And no sign of Lyly anywhere. When they get back, and he sincerly hopes they do, he will hope to be more lucky.

Shuffling a bit nervously he mumbles under his breath.

"Dangers? No, stay on road, yes, will do that."

Merisel is not impressed by the map. It doesn't show any detail and basically says to follow the road. How helpful is that? It'd be better if it said where the dangers were and for that matter what they were. Something about this whole affair just seems wrong...

"Road? Well, in places, I suppose. Normally everyone sails around the interior of the island. There are some very nasty things out there. I've scouted enough to know where most of them may be, and the route I show should keep you away from them.

"The whole trip should take about seven days. The forest will be slow going--the trail is there, but overgrown in many places; the mountains will be quicker this time of year, not much snow pack. However, you'll want some cold weather gear or you'll like freeze to death when you camp.

"The swamps--who knows? Always the strangest stuff in the swamps."

"Some items are always available to Pathfinders, of course. Mundane items are so common the society doesn't bother."

Being in the society is reflected in the discounted prices and ability to spend presitege points on some items (like wands of CLW, for example, for 2 prestiege points). Most benefits don't really show themselves until you gain a few levels, though. For now, you pretty much slouch along like all the "regular" adventurers.

Merisel wants to be prepared. She hopes it doesn't snow as that will slow them down and make finding food more difficult. She cautions the others to bring at least 2 days worth of trail rations.

She buys:

Cold weather clothing 8 gp
Winter blanket 5 sp

(She'd buy furs & other gear except that she'd be into heavy encumbrance. Argh.)

While the group is out shopping and gearing up, a middle-aged dark haired man who uses a cane stands by the group, waving in a friendly manner. He is clearly not a Pathfinder (no gear), just a nice travelling outfit and a cane, with a backpack and waterskin attached with a bedroll. A small dagger hangs on his belt.

"Sorry, it took me a bit to finish off that last deal. I am, however, ready to take a bit of a stroll with you all, now. Whenever you are ready, of course. The Society has put me up at the Grand Lodge, so I suspect I'm not that far from your rooms anyway. In any case, I appreciate your helping an older man with this chore. I assume we'll leave at first light?"

Nester is it? Very nice to make your acquaintance. Pennyfellow is the name, Daggert Pennyfellow. I don't expect us to see much danger on this trek, but rest assured that if we do we'll keep you safe.

Daggert walks with the old man back to the lodge and chats amicably with him, making small talk about the weather, the society and what kind of relics he specializes in.
