“Cab’s comin’ outa your pay,” remarked Frank as the two men stood in front of Pete’s Pit.

Nolan didn’t hesitate to respond. “Deal, let’s go.”

Happy to have that conversation over with, Nolan tucked the package into a large, featureless black carrying case and cuffed it to his own wrist. With his free hand, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his comm tablet. This, too, was black and featureless – the sign of someone who doesn’t like to draw attention.

He spoke a few words into the tab’ and within minutes a cab pulled up in front of them. It was bright yellow and black and matched the color of the driver’s hair, which was striped to look like a bumblebee. He couldn’t place it, but Nolan seemed to recall that style having some sort of significance with one of the local gangs.

“Stinger,” stated Frank dryly as the cab approached. “Riding with a ganger. Great.”

“At least he won’t be the type to ask questions. Get in.”

Nolan and Frank both climbed into the back seat, which sank noticeably under the combined weight of their implants. The vehicle automatically adjusted to the new load and it was obvious that the car had been modified to carry more than just the average passenger. Nolan knew he hadn’t called just any cab company, but he didn’t know his contacts were going to send something like this.

“Where to?” asked the cabby.

“195 Morrison Street,” replied Nolan, closing the door next to him.

“Sure thing, pal.” The cabby punched a few numbers into a control panel on his dashboard. There was a bobble-head doll in the window that looked like something from an old heavy metal band and its long-haired head started banging back and forth as the vehicle accelerated.

It was smooth sailing to the business district. Nolan was glad they had decided to take the cab after all.

As the vehicle pulled into downtown though, the feeling of relaxation vanished. The cab came to a complete stop despite the traffic signals being green and outside the window, crowding the streets, thousands of people were raising havoc.

“What in blazes?” Nolan was taken aback by the sight. “What’s going on here?”

“Looks like an old-fashioned riot!” exclaimed the cabby with far more satisfaction than seemed normal for such a situation.

“Dislocated workers,” mused Frank. “Lotsa job cuts lately.”

Nolan gazed on in astonishment. He tried to get into someone’s mind to get a feel for what was happening, but there was too much static – too many people all in one place, each with their own primal urges to destroy everything they found themselves opposing. The strain caused him a headache, and he cursed himself for having even attempted such a feat.

“What do we do? We’re supposed to deliver a package to someone who probably put half these people out of work.”

“Morals, Holtz?” Frank asked. He would have sounded surprised if it had been within his means.

“Nothing like that. But our guy’s not going to show his face with rioters pounding down his door, now will he? And we still need to find a way to get through this mess.”

The cabby pounded on his horn, letting out a blast of sound that could have been heard for several blocks. Instead of parting for traffic, the crowd turned their attention to the vehicle.

“Oh look, THEY have jobs!” shouted a man from the crowd. In an instant, hordes of people descended upon the vehicle and started rocking it back and forth. One particular individual grabbed the rear bumper with arms made of steel and began to lift the back end of the car from the earth.

Yes, leave the work of causing mass injury to an innocent cab driver
