Here's a new game I'd like you all to play with me: a choose-your-own-adventure story. Everyone is invited to play by reading along and responding to the poll at the end of each post. The response that receives the most votes will be the direction in which the story heads.

Background
This will be a cyberpunk story set in the world of Psi-punk. You don't need to know anything about the setting to read and play along, but you're welcome to check out the Psi-punk page or the game's development blog at http://psi-punk.blogspot.com if you'd like a bit more detailed information.

Just to give you the basics though, Psi-punk is set on Earth in the year 2096. As you'd expect from a cyberpunk setting, megacorporations rule the world and cyberware is prevalent in society. Unlike many other cyberpunk settings though, Psi-punk also has a big focus on psionics and other psychic phenomena. People who possess psychic powers are not always kindly looked upon my normals though and one company, called Magicorp, has developed electronic devices (dubbed "magic") that emulate psionic abilities and puts them in the hands of non-mentals.

Here's a link to the post entitled "A Brief History Lesson" on the dev blog: http://psi-punk.blogspot.com/2012/01/brief-history-lesson.ht...

How to Play
This is a choose-your-own-adventure story in which we'll all choose the path by consensus. I'll post a poll at the end of each story and after a few days (perhaps up to a week, depending on number of responses and my own time commitments) I'll write the next piece of the story based on the poll's results.

Feel free to post your own comments and ideas for how you'd like the story to progress. The idea here is that we'll be writing a sort of "shared story". Even if the path you voted for doesn't get selected, you'll have the option to comment about what you think should/may happen, and depending on how close any particular poll is the story may just take on elements of more than one path at a time.

This is a little different than a typical PbF here at RPGG, so remember that it's open to everyone (no limit to the number of players/voters/commenters) and feel free to offer suggestions.

Format
One final note: Due to the nature of this being a story with open-ended commenting, there may be multiple threads on the Psi-punk PbF forum. I'll make a Geek List to point to each of the new threads so that new sections of the story don't get lost in all of the commenting.

The first post is already ready for your vote.

Choose Your Own Adventure Chapter 1: The Story Begins

Edit: Here's a link to the GeekList.

The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way Where many paths and errands meet.

Thanks for all of the support!

I must admit, the idea of doing a Choose Your Own Adventure was my wife's idea, but I did all of the work. She's been excited to hear that it's been so well-received.

I've been doing something similar for a while now.http://voteforadventure.tumblr.com

It has been a lot of fun and I've played with the format a lot. I've tried all kinds of different mechanics and types of story at this point. I've also found that the format suffers from attrition. I usually start out each story with anywhere from 50 to 500 regular voters and that number slowly falls with each update. I think what happens is that if someone misses an update they lose interest, but I can't say for sure.
