Prelude
A few weeks has past since your mission in the Ferros system, and your wounds are healing nicely. Cadeuceus did a good job patching you up, and you are all saddened when Corvida tells you that Cadeuceus is being assigned to a different squad. You are supposed to get a replacement, but you have yet to meet this person.

Corvida gives weekly briefings on the ship's progress. The Deathwatch is under the leadership of the Inquisition, and is often called upon to do various tasks on behalf of this organization, but most of the time marines in the Watch perform duties and patrols that was assigned decades, and sometimes centuries ago. The travels of the Emperor's Sentinel is one of these patrols, and while the crew and commander change, the ship has made its sweeps through the sector for a long time. Currently it is leaving the region called the Iron Collar, the worlds closest to the Warp Gate that has made this crusade possible. It is called the Iron Collar because it consists of fortress worlds, the Imperial stronghold in the sector. The Ferros system you just left, is an important source of materials for these planets, and the war effort in general.

The last port the ship was in was Karlack, the seat of the Achilus Crusade, and the base of operations for the Crusade's commander Lord Militant Solomon Tetrarchus. Shortly after leaving port, Corvida announced to the ship, that he was diverting from the planned route to investigate something. What he wanted to investigate, he hasn't told any of you, but from what you have heard the ship is moving into the area between the Canis and Acheros salient. Why Corvida is moving the ship to this uninteresting area, both in terms of conflict and strategic interest, is unknown to you.

At the moment, you are all sitting in what is known on-board as Ambrio's chamber. It is perhaps the second largest room on the ship (after the cathedral), and it functions as a mess hall for the battle brothers serving on the Emperor's Sentinel. The chamber can sometimes leave you disconcerted, it is an odd feeling that only a dozen marines are eating in a chamber of this size. That doesn't mean there are only marines here, the ever present serfs move between the tables, serving and performing the necessary rituals.

The food is bland, but that matters little to you, it serves its purpose. Food gives you no real pleasure. You long for battle.

Corvida has found a format for the meals, that works for everyone. The first portion of the meal is consumed while someone recites inspirational texts from the pulpit. This honour rotates among the marines, and the texts read are always from their chapter. Sometimes it is stories of honour being read, other times it passages from their tactical manuals. For the second part of the meal, you are allowed to quietly talk amongst yourself.

For this meal, someone from your squad is doing the sermon. What will he talk about?

The sermon will be held by: 1custom4{Rafen;Leviticus;Dariel;Dorio} -> ( Dorio) -> Dorio

OOC: Sverre's character is not with you yet. Feel free to add flavour about what you are doing. The one chosen for the sermon should write something to that affect.

Here we go again

Dorio

Dorio carefully opens a thin, worn book and begins reciting. He doesn't actually need to read the words--he could speak them from memory if he wanted to--but the book was part of the ceremony.

"When escorting civilians in a hostile environment, it is important to note that they lack the battle reflexes of a Space Marine. Should any firing ensue, the first priority is to cover the civilians. Keep them low to the ground and protect them with your armor. If possible, direct them to nearby cover. Only when the civilians are as protected as possible should you begin the usual tactics of returning fire, flanking, and eliminating the enemy.

Keep in mind that civilians, particularly unarmored civilians, are highly susceptible to explosions. Be wary of the use of grenades and demolitions in their vicinity.

Demonic territory is particularly dangerous to civilians. Their minds are much more fragile. They are far more likely to go mad, or fall to the dark influences. Keep watch of them, observe any changes in behavior, and do not hesitate to restrain any of them if they are showing signs of demonic persuasion. Execution may be necessary in extreme circumstances."

Dorio continued the litany for a few more minutes, detailing common procedures when dealing with civilians. He then closed the book, carefully set it down, and returned to his seat with the rest of his unit.

Dorio's speech, you notice, is met by a good response. This is a topic not often discussed. For the rest of the meal, you have the oppertunity to talk amongst yourself.

It's a shame they reassigned Cadeuceus to a different squad. I hope they assign another Apothecary to ours. Or at least someone else that is decent handling a bolter.

Anyone heard any rumors on our next mission or why we are in this boring part of space?

No but I guess it will be something to do with that thing he wanted to take a closer look at. But if it's a very important mission I guess that there are battle brothers that have higher states of service that will deal with that.

Brother Dorio shakes his head. "Unknown. Perhaps the Inquisition has a purpose here, but for now, our skills are being wasted. We were bred for war, not for waiting."

Sitting at your table, you notice something peculiar. The servants, always trying to be unnoticed, are behaving differently around your table. They near it causually, and they walk away from it quickly.

Aknaton, a boisterous assault marine from a chapter called Angels of Purity, stands up from his table and adresses you, "It is because of this," he points at Rafen and Dariel, "your old and funny looking armour makes the simple serfs think you worship chaos." He smiles wickedly, "I of course know better, but tell me, how did you manage to get Corvida to send you on that last mission. It brought you honour and glory that rightfully isn't yours. Is it because you are all from first founding chapters, and Corvida is to? The arrogance!"

Rafen feels his anger bristling, and struggles to keep control over himself. He rises slowly, looks at the Assault Marine, and speaks, his voice trembling with emotion;

Battlebrother, what you perceive to be arrogance, is in fact a firm knowledge of our chapter's illustrious history. We are rightly proud of the achievements and accolades of the sons of Sanguinus. We wear the black, not for having sought it, but because we are ordered to join the DeathWatch. I can assure you, none of us have laid claim to glory that isn't ours. We have all earned our place.

The arrogance, I fear, is perceived due to your own level of arrogance. While it is true that we hail from the Founding Chapters, the chapters that have come after also have much to offer, and, though it is true that the Successor Chapters are often viewed with a lack of respect within the chapters, that is not of import now. All that matters is that we do what we can, for the glory of our Chapters, of the DeathWatch, and, ultimately, the Golden Throne.

Your yearning for glory is great, I see that. See that it doesn't consume you. What glory we earn in doing the Emperor's work is a bonus, in addition to the glory of serving Him on the Golden Throne.

Now, Peace, battlebrother.

Having so spoken, Rafen sits down, caressing his Blood Drop Pendant.

OOC: I believe a roll for air of authority would be appropriate at this point? Here goes: 1d100 = (87) = 87

Rafen's words does little to calm Aknaton. His nostrils flairs as Rafen speaks, but he is somewhat taken aback when Rafen simply sits down after he has finished speaking. For a moment Aknaton searches for words, before he speaks, "No, brother, no peace. There is only peace in death. And before I go to meet the God-Emperor, the Pharaoh of mankind, I want to have killed the mightiest Xeno in his name." He takes a few steps back, and before he turns and leave, he says, "Just be careful you don't get in over your head, I don't want to be sent on a rescue mission to retrieve your gene-seed." As he walks away, his squad mates rise tp follow him, looking at Rafen with some hostility.

As the argument escalates, Dorio says nothing, but slowly rises to his feet, prepared to tackle the antagonistic Angel of Purity to the ground if necessary. As the marine finally walks away, Dorio looks at his battle brothers.

"Overzealous fool. With that attitude, he will rush heedlessly into battle and find himself surrounded and alone."

Indeed, esteemed brother, I fear you are right. I just hope to the golden throne that he may see the error of his attitude. Through humility and dedication we can do more to the advancement of our God-Emperor.

If not, I suspect he will face the Golden Throne soon enough.

Briefing
Except for the altercation in the mess hall, the rest of the week continues as normal. You notice that Aknaton and his squad mates are looking at you suspiciously when you meet, but other than that, things are back to normal.

Shortly thereafter you notice what you now are able to identify as the ship slowing down and moving into a system. And it is with a rush of excitement that you learn that Corvida has called you to briefing.

He greets you as you enter the chamber in an unusual informal tone. Also in the chamber are his second-in-command Probus, a highly renowned Ultramarine, and a mysterious marine serving on the ship, who’s only known facts are that he is of the White Scars chapter and that his name is Oghul. The two other marines are standing close to the briefing dais, close to Corvida, but subservient to him.

Finally, already standing on the platform where the kill-team being briefed is Vaylund, an apothecary that you know joined a little while before you, but because of assignments on the ship, hasn’t seen much combat. Corvida gestures you to take your places, “Well met. I apologize for taking Cadeuceus from you, but I see now that his temperament is more suited in a different squad. To replace him, I am moving Vaylund into your squad. He is a most able marine, and eager for the glory you have already begun to harvest.”

OOC: Feel free to say something

Several small bionic implants protruding from Vaylunds skin catch the light as he turns his shaven head towards the new arrivals and lets his dissapproving gaze glide over them. His upper lip curls slightly as he sees exactly what he expects; able-bodied adeptus astartes, but nothing more.

He notices the techmarine in their kill-team and naturally adresses him.

"I am Apothecary Vaylund of the Iron Hands chapter." he announces. "Until now I have been assigned the holy task of maintaining and strengthening every battle-brother on this ship."

"I have now been reassigned to assist your kill-team in whatever assignment our Watch Captain,"
he gestures slightly with his bionic hand in Corvidas direction, "deems to be of higher importance."

Dissembling his annoyance at Veylund's facial expressions, Rafen decides to be the bigger Space Marine:

Brother Veylund. I am sure your contributions will serve the Emperor well, and allow you to achieve well-deserved accolades for yourself and your chapter. I look forward to going into the field with you.

Corvida straightens, a signal that the briefing is about to begin. You all fall quiet. Then he hesitates, very unlike Corvida, he pauses for a moment, before he says, mostly to himself, “Where to begin...” The room is still while he is thinking, then he reclaims his focus, and pushes a button on the briefing console. The large steel shutters on the left side of the room glide open, revealing the exterior view. The craft is in orbit around a beautiful (if that mattered to you), blue planet. On the planet you see a single landmass, occupying about a twentieth of the planets surface.

That is Achilus' Prize,” Corvida begins. “It was discovered shortly after Achilus had conquered and fortified the Iron Halo in 783.M41. It was classified as a paradise world, and it was decided that citizens that had proven themselves during the opening stages of the Crusade could be rewarded with being allowed to settle here. I will give you are more details on the planet, and its only city when we are descending later.

As you may know this is my third tour of duty within the Watch. On my first tour, years ago, I met a young Inquisitor called Globus Vaarak. We were working on the same mission, so to speak, but on different angels. He was breaking apart a ring of cold traders, that is what they call people that make their living selling illegal xeno technology; me and my Kill-team were fighting a clan of Xenos trying to infiltrate highly dangerous technology into the Imperium. When we found out about each other, Vaarak took charge of our operation, and together we were greatly successful in stopping the trade. The one thing we didn't accomplish was to arrest this man, Captain Allan DeClerck. Highly intelligent, and slippery, he managed to disentangle himself from the operation before we could get evidence against him. What makes things worse, is that all the other criminals we put do death, were horrified to learn how much their actions had harmed the Imperium. They had been acting out of simple greed - but DeClerck knew, it almost seems he wanted to harm the Imperium. Vaarak has been keeping an eye on him ever since.

To the untrained eye DeClerck is a regular rogue trader, he indulges in some cold trade, but not enough to warrant any special censure. But if one looks at the places that has traded with him, one sees that these planet, shortly after he has left, has been the scene of some tragic event, assassinations, riots, secession, heresy, and worse. It seems that whatever things DeClerck sells them, ultimately leads to their downfall.

This brings us back the Achilus' Prize. On Karlack I spoke to one of Vaarak's agents, and he could tell me that DeClerck made a stop at Achilus' Prize a few months ago. Since then, communication from Achilus' Prize has become somewhat erratic. The commanders at Karlack does not care much for this little planet, and erratic responses hasn't made them act – yet – but I want to investigate this as soon as possible.Corvida seems determined, as if this is personal to him.

The only objective in this mission is to find out what has happened to the planet, and to find out what DeClerck has done. If we are lucky, there is nothing going on here, but it seems unlikely, especially since we have failed to contact the planet after entering the system. We have some clues on how to investigate this, I will brief you on this on the way down. I will come along, with both Probus and Oghul, I have some special assignments for them. I am sorry, this is all I can tell you for now, I wish to depart for the planet as soon as possible. Pick a leader and gear, We will swear our oaths in the hanger before departure. Meet me there in twenty minutes.

OOC: 30 Req points of gear for each. Are you excited yet?

Vaylund is slightly taken aback by the Techmarines question. An Iron Father would not ask this question, but simply take command. He tries to remind himself that other chapters foolishly neglect to properly venerate the Machine God.

"Why not you, Brother Dorio? I am certain your close connection to the Machine spirits will guide us well on this mission.

Brother Dorio considers momentarily. "I am certain I could handle the responsibility, if there are no objections. I have had some experience with these sort of missions. A cool temper and a calculating mind are much more important to success than battlelust and firepower."

He looks at each of his battle brothers in turn. "Are there any objections? Would anyone else wish to bear the responsibility of leadership?"
