Okay, I have a short module from Dungeon Magazine 16 that I'm already planning to run another group through outside of RPGG. What do you guys think would benefit the community more - Another 5e DND game or Basic Fantasy? I've never run Basic, but I played in a game the other night and didn't find it too different. It would be some variety.

What say you?

What appeals to you the most. I understand that D&D 5e tends to fill up quickly anyway, so there is no reason not to go that way, but if you like basic better, then go for it.

Either one would be great! I'd lean towards 5E simply because it seems you are more familiar with it, but I'm sure either choice would get a good response.

5e Dungeons and Dragons/ 1st Level Characters / 5 seats
Necropolis by Nigel Findley (1989)

Your band of adventurers finds itself passing through the village of Wargrave. The villagers look to you in awe, as if you're the answer to their collective prayers.

By all evidence, the dead interred in the necropolis outside the village have arisen and are threatening the farmers - extorting them for what little they have. There is nothing the locals can do to avert this threat, other than to accede to the demands made by the vengeful dead. Their only hope is for outside aid to appear.

Will you accept the call and save the people of Wargrave from this menace? This adventure will take some investigative work and bravery.

------------------

All experience levels welcome! Basic rules are available for free - you should read those on your own; Rules will be further explained during play.

Pre-gen characters are available or you may create your own. Help available as well. All official classes/races allowed except Aarokocra.

Expect the game to last somewhere in the 3+ month range (could vary drastically).

I would like for everyone to commit to checking/posting daily - something always comes up, but if posting/checking daily doesn't happen, the game may grind to a halt.

Personally, I like having at least 1 or 2 players more.

Not forgetting that this is a newbie initiative - players may forget to subscribe/login/check the game table, or players may drop out halfway or go MIA - so having additional players is definitely a good thing (like Mulligans says, as long as you could scale the game up/down appropriately).

Plus, having more players (say, 5 or 6 players in a table) allow me to do this in my games as well - where decisions need to be made, e.g., heading north or west, I'll move the party to the next scene as long as I have 3 same votes/posts.

Lost Mine of Phandelver - Part 1 (The Journey to Phandalin), a Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Adventure

For 4-6 1st level adventurers.

In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.”

Welcome to the Sword Coast!

------------------

All experience levels welcome! Rules will be discussed during play - you can find basic rules available here: https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/251082/dungeons-dragons-5...

I will assist with making characters as our first step, you can have as much, or as little, assistance as you like.

We will play Adventurer's League legal, which is a set of rules that allow your character to be transferred to any other Dungeons & Dragons Adventurer's League game, either here on the Geek or in a face-to-face games.

We will just be doing the first part of the Lost Mines of Phandelver, which full adventure might take 2 years or more. This first section, the journey to Phandalin, will introduce you to the region and the world of D&D, and will likely only last around 3 months. At that point, we'll decide where we want to go from there.

I would like for everyone to commit to checking & posting daily on weekdays - something always comes up, but if posting/checking daily doesn't happen, the game may grind to a halt.

Wow. You really intend to run the whole Starter Set? I think that you should count on the game running 2 years rather than 6 months (I know you said "well over 6 months" but that is a severe understatement). Really cool offer, though (I thought about offering this one, but it is a huge investment if they really go for the whole game).

I prefer longer term games, but I figured at when we finished the first section or so I’d see who wanted to continue, recruit new players as needed, etc.

I think 3 games is probably all I’ve got time for, but my other two are even longer-term (dungeon of mad mage and out of the Abyss)

I ran 2 tables in the 2018 initiative, and 1 in the 2018 fall initiative. Each table had 6 players.

At the end of those 3 short games, I invited interested players to play Hoard of the Dragon Queen. It so happens that 2 players from each of those 3 tables were keen to play.

We are almost completing part 1 (of 8 parts) in about 3 months. Completing all 8 will be around a 2-year endeavour. I must say that, right here right now where we are, all of us are currently having a blast!

...

So, I think longer games work. But newer players need to complete a short one first, to get an experience of PbF games, before we throw them into the ring of fire. Lol.

Perhaps, though completing is also a good excuse to quit where having a continuing story can propel you onward.

Cheat Your Own Adventure - Oh Crap, My Robot is Evil!

From the back cover:
"You've always had a knack for science. This year's science fair has a telescope for first place! You needed something to set yourself apart to win the big prize. What better experiment than building a robot?!

Of course, things don't always go well. Sometimes robotics AI is more of an art than a science. You may have created a homicidal death bot. You may also have forgotten to include an off switch."

__________________________________________________________

Come join in and help write a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style game! We'll read along and sometimes die. But don't worry, we can always CHEAT and pick another page in the book.

1This is a super fun, fairly quick game.
2Free one page rules.
3This table will be for 5 players
4Please commit to checking/posting daily; Game should last <2weeks or so

So, I've decided to just make clear in the pitch that we are only committing to the first section of the Lost Mine, and bring the group to a decision at that point on whether to dissolve, or go forward, recruiting more members if we need to.

Michael,
Thanks for offering "Cheat Your Own Adventure". I had a great time with it last year. If those newbie players don't jump on it, I might just try to get in myself.

I'm super stoked to run it again!

So, I'm offering 5e and Cheat Your Own Adventure. I'd like to run something else, but I'd hate to over-commit. The CYOA game should be done pretty quickly. Have we previously had games start a few weeks after, like a late-to-the-party round after initial sign ups?

Star Trek Adventures: Klingon

The adventure begins as the cadets are completing the last of four years of grueling, often brutal training at the Academy. With the end in sight, they look forward eagerly to assuming the duties of commissioned officers in the Imperial Navy. One final test remains, however. Those who succeed in the final exercise will graduate to become ensigns. Those who fail are likely to meet their death instead.

All characters will be playing Klingons though you will still be command, science and operations specialties.

Stats for the race were listed in the Beta Quadrant book, if you don't have this and would like to play. PM me and we can work something out.

Expectations:

We will probably go through a round of posting every one to two weekdays, there will be on posting on the weekends.

This is my first time running this system, so be patient. I may make mistakes.

We as Guard offer all that we are to protect the sanctity of our species, the freedom of our kin, and the honor of our ancestors.
With knowledge, sword, and shield, we do these deeds, never putting a lone mouse above the needs of all, or the desire of self above another.
We strive for no less than to serve the greatest good.
// The Guard's Oath by David Petersen

Mouse Guard is a roleplaying game centered around life in the Mouse Territories. Patrols set forth to take on a multitude of challenges. Danger lurks around each and every corner for these brave mice. Obstacles appear in the form of weather, wilderness, animals, and other mice. Over the course of the changing seasons, individual mice grow stronger and wiser. Some may perish, yet such is the way of the natural order. This is the tale of an ever-changing patrol and its adventures. Perhaps these mice will fade with time, or become the heartbeat of myths.

Welcome! This is my first time hosting a play-by-forum adventure, yet don't let that sound like a stumbling block. I'm excited to get started and guide participants of all experience levels!

EXPECTATIONS

- No material needs to be purchased: I'll be summarizing important rule sections and providing explanations where needed.
- This system isn't particularly light on rules, yet I plan to make it as simple as possible: Just be aware that this may not be the best choice to dip one's toes in.
- Participants may choose to walk through a detailed character creation process or choose a pre-generated character: Either works!
- Ironically enough, I have no knowledge of the Mouse Guard universe outside of the RPG, which means no one else needs to... Although it is a plus!
- We will decide on a general posting schedule once all participants are chosen to accommodate everyone as much as possible.
- This adventure is designed to be a single story that has an ending, but if any members of the group should like to continue, I'm certainly open to it.
- Most importantly, I hope you have fun with this one!

This adventure will accommodate up to 4 PLAYERS. The more, the merrier, but unfortunately I can't commit to expanding the player count. Please also keep in mind that we'll be sticking to a G or PG rating with all roleplaying material.

Spring has sprung in Lockhaven, and the start of the season has stirred many patrols out of a long winter's rest. The snow that blanketed the territories and hid slumbering dangers has melted, revealing all manner of mayhem. Your patrol has been called upon to answer the cry for help from Lonepine. A desperate messenger brought news of rising floodwaters around the town this very morning. The situation is dire with the real potential for a catastrophic loss of life, and even the washout of the northeast route to Port Sumac and beyond. The time has come: Will your patrol find a way to protect Lonepine from a natural disaster... Or is there a worse threat at work?

--

This description is almost finalized. Any feedback or other comments? Just want to get a quick idea, since this is my first time trying this out. I think I have it all set, but feel free to offer up any thoughts. Thanks!
