Time Travel Table
roll 1D12 (if combinations contradict, such as landing in same location and then landing in King Arthur's realm only the last part stays in effect)

1 - You stay in same location so you end up out in space somewhere as the earth has moved; roll again quickly! and add 3
2 - You stay in same spot on earth, only location in time has changed; roll again and add 3
3 - Time Machine Mishap (roll on Mishap table; then roll again on this table and add 3)
4 - You landed in the middle of a jungle full of dinosaurs
5 - You landed in the middle of a swamp full of dinosaurs
6 - You landed in a dystopian future
7 - You landed in a dystopian future with dinosaurs
8 - You landed on a specific date of major historical significance (but maybe not in the right physical location; roll 1D6: 1 - you're on another continent, 2-5 - you're in the right location, 6 - you're not there, but may get there if you move quickly)
9 - You landed in your own past
10 - You landed in a parallel world (roll 1D6: 1-2 - in the past, 3-4 - in the present; 5-6 - in the future)
11 - You landed just minutes before your original arrival in the present scene
12 - You landed in the Stone Age
13 - You landed in King Arthur's realm
14 - You landed in Victorian times
15 - You landed in a future ruled by cats


Time Machine Mishaps (this assumes a device that travels with you; use table at your discretion)
roll 1D6
1 - Meltdown - needs time to cool down
2 - Partially submerged in the ground/floor/wall/swamp - needs to be dug out and/or pulled out
3 - Blows up - needs to be MacGyvered from temporally local materials/items; takes time and tools/expertise
4 - Broken part - needs to be MacGyvered from temporally local materials/items
5 - Out of fuel/energy source - needs to be refueled from local source (roll 1D6: 1-4 easy to get because it's abundant, 5-6 hard to get because it's scarce or expensive)
6 - roll twice (if you get 6 again or duplicates of any other entry you got lucky and those have no additional effect)


note: just something whipped up without a lot of any research)

13-Bones; What kind of monster are you, disturbing someone's coffin?

Can your tables it be copied and pasted into a pdf so that people are able to use it just by looking at it? If yes, then you can enter it!

If we need to actually use a spreadsheet in order for the table to generate a response, then no. This challenge is for look-up tables only - which players need to roll on.

RPG Creation Ingredient Generator

I had so much fun participating in the Game Chef Competition this year, and got such great feedback, that I find I want more four word ingredient lists to use to seed game ideas. I looked at the word lists for the past five years of Game Chef Competitions and came up with my own game ingredient generator, using the types of words they had previously chosen (without using any of the actual words).

You may use any meaning of the words (for most, if not all, have multiple meanings). And you may use any tense for verbs - they don't have to be kept in their "ing" or "ed" forms.

Roll 4d100, with 1d100 rolled for each column to get four ingredients to inspire your next RPG or adventure:

Don't worry, I'm still working on the Iain Banksian Ship Name Generator - it just is taking a really long time. I have a better idea of how I'm going to do it though!

For the Game Chef Generator, Ingredient 1 is all adjectives or adverbs, Ingredient 2 is nouns with multiple meanings, Ingredient 3 is words that are both verbs and nouns, and Ingredient 4 are "power" verbs. I had fun trawling through word lists to find the right mix of words to spark imagination...

Urban, Puzzle, Need, Drifting makes me think of a Maze Runner type scenario.
Nebulous, Monument, Trust, Propelling makes me think of the moving city in the Mortal Engines series.
Rustic, Space, Sand, Cradling makes me think of sands reclaiming a fading ancient empire...

So the list has done what I wanted, and seeded ideas! And yes, this was partially inspired because the 24-hour contest started up for this year!

Working on a lot of stuff right now, but managed to put this together because this sounded fun..

Disappointing contents for a treasure chest (or trunk, vault, etc.). roll 1d12

1. Absolutely nothing.

2. A second, smaller chest, containing a third, even smaller chest containing, a fourth, even smaller chest, containing the key for the first chest.

3. Soup, not like cans of soup, just literally filled with soup.

4. Various sizes and types of bags filled with sand.

5. A mirrored bottom reflecting the faces of those looking inside so they can realize that the real treasure was the friendships that were forged along the way.

6. Filled with very poor quality counterfeit currency.

7. Tools and materials for building a nearly-identical chest.

8. Chest is actually a fold-out table designed to look like a chest.

9. Most of a bear skeleton.

10. Dead bees, obviously meant to be a trap by someone unfamiliar with the bee life cycle.

11. A strongly-worded letter about how stealing is wrong.

12. 2d6 pieces of worthless treasure.


Worthless treasures. roll 1d40 (it’s like a d100 but with a d4 in place of the first d10)

1. An unfinished leather mug.

ARAG: A Random Acronym Generator

These tables generate a myriad of random acronyms. They should be used liberally when encountering petty bureaucrats or people in specialist fields.

Being random, you will have to invent the meanings. Of course, acronyms are most often used to obscure the intended meaning and frequently are invented on the spur of the moment and actually have no meaning.

To determine the length of your acronym roll a d20 and lookup this table:

These tables were created by analysing a corpus of several thousand acronyms to determine the frequencies of the length and each letter in each position.


An example to help clarify:

Roll a d20 for the length 1d20 = (18) = 18. Look this up on the table to discover that the length is 5.

The first letter is d30 = (24) = 24. Look down the first position column to find: S.
The second letter is d30 = (3) = 3. Look down the second position column to find: B.
Third letter: d30 = (29) = 29. Look down the third position column to find: W.
Fourth letter d30 = (9) = 9. Look down the fourth position column to find: F.
Fifth letter d30 = (18) = 18. Look down the fifth position column to find: M.

And the completed acronym is SBWFM: She'll Bloody Well Find Me. Perhaps one used by Drow males when they've misbehaved?

This is not quite as complex as I want it, which is why this is version 1. I have a feeling I can do better if I keep working on it.

First, roll 1d10 on Table A to determine how many words are in the name and what pattern is used to generate the name. Then follow the instructions to roll 1d100 on each subsequent Table to generate the ship name.

Aw, thanks! I was really hoping to be able to include 4 and 5 word names, but the effort just to get 2 and 3 word names took weeks!

And I hope my outrageous tables don't scare people away from making short and sweet tables! The world needs all types of random tables!
