Random Family Member

Pick and combine tables for your own needs.

1. blood-relative
2. blood-relative
3. in-law
4. step-family

Relationship (d8 or d10)
1. parent
2. sibling
3. sibling
4. grand-parent
5. cousin
6. sibling of a parent or their partner (aunt/uncle...)
7. offspring of the former (nephew/ niece...)
8. your own offspring [if inappropriate for your character, replace with sibling or cousin]
[9. relative created by scientific means or magic]
[10. conjoined twins, roll 1d9 on this table for your relationship]

Family stance (d8 or d12)
1. blasé or stuck-up about the family
2. in love with a family-member
3. never spoken about by the rest of the family
4. broken contact with the family
5. more admired than you by the family
6. shares your views about the family
7. still needs the family's support
8. keeps exploiting the family
[9.-12. respect/ affection/ rapport with the family]

Gender (d8)
1. female (cis)
2. female (trans)
3. male (cis)
4. male (trans)
5. genderfluid
6. non-binary
7. agender
8. polygender

I'm aware the gender options do not include all possible genders. It can't. Please adjust the table if you do not feel represented. I'm also aware the table does not represent existing proportions of genders in the population. I wasn't going for that (in none of those tables). Be respectful and have fun.

People players have never heard of before who act as adventure hooks

1. A distant relative - cousin (1), great aunt (2) or great uncle (3-6) - has decided that you're their only heir.
2. A beloved teacher or college professor.
3. Your college roommate.
4. A sibling you haven't seen in years.
5. A former friend or colleague you used to work or serve with.
6. An aunt or uncle who moved some distance away or to another country.
7. Your best friend from childhood.
9. A high school sweetheart who you have lost contact with.
10. Someone you supposedly interact with regularly, perhaps a tradesman, shop owner or professional.

In all cases bar the first, roll on the following tables.

It relates to a problem the person has:

1. Themselves
2. With Their Spouse
3. With Their Child
4. With Their Employer
5. With Their Employee
6. With Their Colleague

The person contacting the character is actually:

1. The Individual
2. Their Spouse
3. Their Child
4. Their Legal Representative

The individual:

1. Needs Help
2. Has Died: 1-2 on d6 - There is an inheritance
3. Has Gone Missing

This is essentially aimed at Call of Cthulhu and the tendency for the hooks to involve NPCs closely associated with a character who the player has never before met or heard of in game.

Any character who has inherited property would probably be best off nuking the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Good job with the modifiers. They're going to have an effect on the distribution, but not so much so that they dominate the effects.

Random word generator

This generator uses the phonotactics of English (data from Wikipedia). You will need to be familiar with the International Phonetic Alphabet (if you're not, there's no time like the present to learn). The vowels are 'general Australian', partly because they fit neatly into a D20 roll, partly because I'm just plain biased.

Step 1: Determine the length of the word (eg: d4 = typical word, 4d4 complex academic terminology)

Step 2: Consult the following chart for each syllable. A syllable is made up of three components: an onset (which may be empty), a nucleus, and (optionally) a coda

Step 3: Enjoy trying to pronounce the word

Syllable onset: D83 (roll D100 and reroll results of 84 and above)
1 m 21 l 41 sl 61 sj 81 skj

Hey, that's awesome. Thanks!

I wasn't happy with the d% weather tables I'd seen, where there's the same small chance of extreme weather regardless of the weather during the previous days. And I didn't want convoluted multi-table seasonal weather charts in the name of realism. So I decided to go with a Markov chain, where the probabilities of a roll depend (only) on the previous roll.

My thought was that the distribution of 2d6 with its peak in the middle would counteract the modifiers keeping the distribution skewed towards the edges. But I didn't actually do any math. I thought the spread starting at zero, and the 3 times -2, 3 times -1, 3 times 0 and so on looked elegant. I had reasonable confidence just from intuition that it worked the way I wanted, but it's really nice to see it confirmed by simulation!

Yes, there are 255 ship names, which I've split in a spreadsheet by length, in order to get a distribution of the words used, where they fall (in the length) etc. Names range from 1 word to 10, but for the sake of my generator, I'll only be using length 1 to 4.

But I also don't want to be able to create those exact names. Nor do I want a list of pre-made names such as rolling a single d100 and getting something like The Perfect Storm (which is not one of his ship names, but is used for this example).

I want to generate a list of new unique ship names in the style of his, where name length and each word are all rolled for, perhaps in a chain Example: Use a d4 to roll for length, and get a 3. Then your roll for word 1 on a table and get The, then you roll word 2 and get Perfect, which tells you to roll on chart that gives you Storm.

So I want names that generally make sense when put together...

I also looked at the ship names in: the Star Wars Universe, the Star Trek Universe, BattleStar Galactica, Babylon 5, the Xuya Universe, the Revelation Space Universe...

Believe me, I've sunk a lot of time into this, but I'm nowhere near done! Perhaps I'll have time to finish it next week.

Jackasses? You let a whole column get stalled and strafed on account of a couple of jackasses? What the hell's the matter with you?

Governmental Babble to Justify... Whatever...

Roll 1d36 for each column,

1d36 can be replicated by the old "d66" roll, where you roll one die as the tens and another as the ones. Commonly used in Toon on random tables.

So let's try this one out.

Random Governmental Babble: 4d36 = (11 + 28 + 28 + 14) = 81

"Envisioning Prioritized Programs to deliver real value."

Works for manager-speak in industry, too.

Yes! Now make one with "real world" percentage distribution for the elements

...guess it would be a lot smaller...

Edit: Turns out to be boring. For "Milky Way":

% Element
00-73 Hydrogen
74-97 Helium
98 Oxygen
99-00 Everything else

One thing, though. In the OP, you mark the deadline at Monday, October 8, 2017.

You meant Monday, October 8, 2018, right?!

Oct. 8? I better get on it! I'll have to think of some ideas for things I would like to have tables for.

You mean you haven't mastered the art of time travel? Very well, I suppose I can change it to this year...
