Well, sadly, I threw in the towel today on my Star Trek Adventures newbie game.

A couple players with characters in key positions went dark, and the posting rate for some of the remaining players became snail-like. I apparently didn't make things clear enough or some of them can't keep rules in their head because I continuously needed to prompt them to take actions during conflicts. I would wait and wait then finally prompt them but then I would feel a bit of dread at the thought of having to work on posting. I certainly had good players and early on it was quite fun, but it started to drag in the past month or even two.

The final straw was when I spent about 1.5 hours late at night this past Monday working on a couple of combat related posts and ended up getting to sleep way later then I anticipated. I realized I just don't have the time for that on a regular basis, especially heading into August which looks to be a very busy month.

Sucks because I really wanted to finish the episode...

Dang!

I'd fallen behind on my reading of it again, so I hadn't seen this happening yet or I would have helped prompt them along from the sidelines

How far off completion were they??

Really close - had to get through a difficult conflict then just coast to the end, really, although I had originally planned for more after that. Maybe I made the scenario too long/complicated... One of my players commented that he felt the Star Trek Adventures system might not be well suited for PbF and I think that is correct to some extent.

If nothing else, this is a good time to stress this point for GMs intending to run games in our next Initiative.

Keep it short and sweet! Plan to finish your game in no more than 3-4 months!

Players new to PbF are less likely to post regularly and for a long duration than seasoned players.

Our goal is to introduce new players into our PbF "club" by giving them a taste. That's not to say a longer game is impossible to pull off, but statistics would likely show that shorter games have a higher success rate.

I realize that, I'm just expressing more frustration because with a more focused group of players I probably could have finished in that time.

Also, who you calling fiesty!? ninja

And my game of The Gentle Ladies' Tea and Monstrosity Destroying & Quilting Circle Auxiliary is finally done! It was a grand finish, and some are quite sad to see it end, but they have resolved the issue of the bear in the conservatory, which was the premise!

Awesome! One of several games I read along with as long as time would allow. I had to give up reading along with all of them eventually, but they're all here until the end of the internet so...

Hmmm... new series... read along with a PbF game that has already completed... editors needed... condense...

Congrats!

Thanks! The final fight was really something... but they eventually prevailed!

I did end up giving up on my other Lexicon game, but I'm still going to make a final post for it. At least I'll have gotten to the end, and the rest of the Encyclopedia is just full of holes as the mystery of what happened to the rest of the contributors deepens.

A table for 3 to 6 Play by Forum RPG newcomers for:

Beyond the Shadow of a Dream,
an introductory town adventure using Advanced Fighting Fantasy, a simple d6-based RPG.

As young, keen adventurers you expect to make your mark with wild exploits in far-away places. But sometimes the adventure comes to you... With a lull in your quests, researches and other duties you find yourselves gathering most nights at The Seal, a popular inn in the bazaar quarter with a varied clientele. The beer is passable, but along with the other drinkers the main draw is the entertainment that the landlord provides. Over the last two nights, a new storyteller has had even the most hard-bitten among you thrilled and moved.

But this evening the tale is just the beginning...

Finished! So I may have ended with only 1 player (the players' Epilogues are still to come) but I finally made it through my Fighting Fantasy town adventure. We had great support from the banner guild and some quality characters and posts, but it's so easy to drift even when I was watching the time tick by. Good luck for the next Initiative, I'm away on holiday until the end of October.

My "Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures" game finally wrapped up today.
The closing scene

Out of the four starting players, two made it to the end, plus a third who joined as a replacement part way through.

It was the first time I'd played or run Beyond the Wall - I'd definitely do it again (or play in it, if someone else were running a game).

The players in my group are almost at the center of the shifting, crazy labyrinth and running around trying to open the gateway out while getting destroyed by some elementals, and it is very up in the air right now (one of the characters just died), and this happened Friday night while they were waiting to see if another player would be able to help with the last step before they died:

YES! I feel like that reaction is the best compliment

She actually read out loud the last page and a half or so of IC posts. There were several interruptions to explain death saves, movement limits, opp attacks, etc. it was entertaining but she was really caught off guard by your cliffhanger. She mad me Log in again here in bed to see if there were any updates!

So the wife of one of my players is invested in the outcome of the game. Definitely calling it a winner.

I'm... um... in TPK town right now.

After trusting the wrong man (and failing to notice his ever changing story), walking into danger and starting a fight with a coven of witches things are looking pretty grim for our heroes.

Yeah, we might be at TPK time too, or damn near enough. Uh oh!
