amanuenses - read books instantly.

But any of: fly, teleport, heal, invisibility, suggestion, prestidigitation, psionic major creation, wall of stone, read thoughts, etc would find some super use in a world of normals. What was that one spell that did something like give you a +10 on a skill check? That one would let you become a fair jack of all trades.

Some of these depend on the assumed level of the caster.

And it depends if they know. (What if the only ones you can speak to are those that couldn't leave earth behind? )

And what if they do know and lie to you? or don't want to answer usefully?

My mom used to tell the story that my grandmother appeared to her briefly one night about a week after she died.

My mom woke up and gram's ghost was sitting on the corner of the bed with a sad look on her face. Mom asked "How are you? How is heaven?" and gram just shrugged (still with the sad face) and disappeared, never to be seen again.

Gram's ghost, at the very least, was not a font of information.

I'd avoid anything that would involve GM adjudication, just in case the cosmic GM wanted to be a jerk (like wish). I'd also avoid anything requiring otherworldly, rare or expensive components. And I'd also avoid anything requiring XP cost, just in case I either did not have XP or would get dropped below my ability to cast.

I'd avoid anything that would get me killed or co-opted into some organization as soon as it was discovered. Fly, invisibility, and any kind of magical cures are near the top of that list.

I may or may not be an overly cynical wizard apprentice.

If I had one of those, I'd certainly try to keep my power secret. Act at night, intermittently, not publicly, or with criminal means to hide unexplained income, etc. This might be aided by the spell itself, if it is 1/day for example.

Read Thoughts would 1st make me a fortune at poker tourneys and then...

Yeah, or Detect Magic to find out if a certain phenomenon/performance was caused/influenced by magic.

Raise Dead Fully.

Why? Do a few for free, and let the rest pay... be a VERY good living.

The problem would be the religious overtones...

But at least it isn't dispellable...

Pun intended?

Trouble is, what do you do if they won't pay? Put them back?

Also, I'd be more worried about funeral directors with pitchforks. The ultra-religious would probably be split on what to do with you - but funeral directors? You'd be costing all of them a lot of money...

wasn't intentional, but wasn't being avoided, either; it's a pretty good one, isn't it?

As for funeral directors...
...if there are only a few people raising the dead, they won't be put out.

From AD&D anyway, I think I'd learn either Invisibility or Rope Trick. Not sure which I like better.

Invisibility would probably be my first choice for snooping or just removing myself from random/uncomfortable/unwanted social moments. It's always interesting to be a fly on a wall and see people's behaviour when you're not around. ....Hmmm....maybe Clairvoyance or ESP might be an alternative also though .....*shrug*...

Rope Trick would be a close runner up for just allowing me to leave reality for a bit with my own bit of personal dimensional space for peace and quiet meditation.

Well, that's what I've got off the top of my head and gut reaction, without going into too much overthinking of it.
