If you could choose to learn one spell or cantrip from D&D (or other system) in real life, what would you choose and why?

Easy, Mending.

"This spell repairs a single break or tear in an object you touch, such as a broken chain link. two halves of a broken key, a torn c1oak, or a leaking wineskin. As long as the break or tear is no larger than 1 foot in any dimension, you mend it. leaving no trace of the former damage."

Oh, the amount of money I would save!

It seems like the default choice would be wish, but that one has complications.

Maybe Detect Lie or Zone of Truth would be good. I think it would be useful for business meetings.

While I agree that wish/miracle would be and ideal if if you didn't have to worry about interpretation. I know a couple friends who would go with fabricate.

I'm not certain I could decide for myself, probably something that gains information - but it depends on if only I get to learn a spell, and if I'm truly limited to one.

As I've answered before, comprehend languages. So much tedious work short-circuited.

When I first read this question, I thought it said to pick only from cantrips. That one is also easy--prestidigitation. Who doesn't want to wiggle their nose and do all the minor stuff that Samantha does on Bewitched?

Locate Object

I spend way too much time looking for things that I was just holding. If I could have that time back, it'd be like gold in my hand (which I could use it for that, too)

Having a couple of small kids a few spring to mind:

Unseen Servant: who could do chores round the house
Modify Memory: "Daddy, you just said 'F*ck' what does that mean?" (I cast modify memory)

Best of all though:

Teleportation: No more 2 hour round trips to work! No more schlepping round airport terminals! No more "Are we nearly there yet!?" 5 minutes into a 7 hour drive!

So many choices: charm monster, fly, heal, invisibility, irresistible dance, telepathy, water breathing.

Heal most likely.

D&D magic, a vast reservoir of power that lets you accomplish wondrous things, see marvellous places and contact people over vast distances. In many ways, a bit like the internet. And what seems to be the main way the internet is used by many people? Mage Hand.

Ha, I was thinking this morning on my ride in that Mage Hand would be my second choice. An awful lot of people poking along in the passing lane in front of me chatting or texting would suddenly find it impossible to keep their device in their hands. Even better if their car window is open.

I'd eventually get arrested, but not a jury in the world would convict.
