Oh, and Praise-God had a brother named Fear-God, who was a poet.

Similar names to Fear-God in other languages include Timotheos (= Timothy, Tim) and Fürchtegott. There's also the German Gottlob (equivalent to Praise-God). These German given names seem to have been in use mostly in the 18th and 19th century.

Compare Amadeus, Theophilus and other theophoric names.

In Finland there was a rally driver called Juha Kankkunen.
Kankkunen means hangover.

There's also a meteorologist called Pekka Pouta.
Pouta means - of all things - fair weather.

Well some last names I've encountered are:
Niemantsverdriet (nobodies sadness)
Naaktgeboren (born naked)
Kortleven (short life)

-edit Oh yes and I know of a crematory called Smelt (which in english means melt), I'm really hoping that's from a last name

You could make a random name generator for this.

My next character:
Male or female?: d2 = (2) = 2
First name: d41 = (34) = 34
Surname [gave up counting...d100 it is]: 1d100 = (47) = 47

I totally could. Maybe next week. Make it a web app for names from early 1800 through early 1900.

It does, doesn't it?

That name is just screaming to be used in an RPG.

That would be awfully cool.

Those name "parts" put me in the mind of Dogs in the Vineyard.

Well, I can't say for certain, but if you like collections of 19th century names, then you're a good candidate for liking Dogs. If nothing else, it's one of the great RPG rule reads.

Here are two more names from my ancestors that fit your list of oddball names.

William Whole America Smith (born right before the American Revolution)
Fern Elannabelle Nonearl Potter

I also have a common female first name of Pervania in one line.

And the old joke: "Here are my four daughters: Faith, Hope, Charity, and Pestilence."

My wife has some awesome names from the past presidents of her college.

I'll see if I can get her to send me the link.

Awesome! When I used to be an administrative assistant at a college I collected names from the students enrolled there... that's how I found the marvelous last names of Blixseth and Levitan, which I promptly used as names for planets in a card game I created.

Awesome!

I'm at a new job now, so I'm not reading history books on a weekly basis, so my collection of names has been temporarily stalled. But I can always start pulling names in from other lists I've compiled over the years from reading college enrollment rosters or phone books

Such as Blixseth and Levitan which are last names screaming to be used in a sci-fi story or game!

Lovecraft had a good ear for unusual names... there's a woman's first name that I've never heard in my life (Rhoby) that is mentioned in passing in (I think) The Shunned House.

I promptly threw it into a game I was playing.

[Okay, so not a "real name" but I bet HPL knew a Rhoby.]
