There is the potential to add one or more additional players if there is group consensus, but the time slot is fixed. Given our schedules I'm planning for this to be only a single session, with the opportunity to continue to a second session.

There's already a pretty good walkthrough on character creation and rules explanation from IndyRick's PbF last year: A Fortune in Gold and Glory :: OOC, so I'm just going to reference that for now. There's also a good overview of the game from this Share a Game thread. I know Kevin is experienced with the game and Alex has at least read it - Steve, do you have a copy of the rules?

Go ahead and start kicking around character ideas, or dive right into creation if you prefer. I will elaborate more on the setting for this particular delve soon. If you have any questions about the game, let me know!

Question: classes from the base book only? Or can we use the Kickstarter add-ons (thief and paladin)? What about the classes from Sorensen's Torchbearer: The Wanderers?

Kickstarter classes are fine. I don't have The Wanderers but I see no problem with using them.

I do have the book! From the Kickstarter. I'll begin my delve into reading it tonight.

I'm open to any class - any recommendations on one that's easier for a new player to grok?

Sweet! I'll choose the one that gives a free persona point every turn.

None of the classes actually do that, of course. That would be cray-cray.

If possible, I'd like to have a good start on your characters by the end of the week. At least the skills, so I can tailor the challenges to your characters.

Sticking with the options in the core book, I could easily go human warrior or halfling burglar. I'm up to the skill descriptions in the book now!

How important is covering the wizard/cleric/thief/fighter split in Torchbearer?

Edit: Also, I had COMPLETELY forgotten that I was lucky and got a signed copy of Torchbearer from the Kickstarter. I think it was actually a tip from Alex that got me in early for a signed copy, ha ha. Thanks!

Not so important in my opinion. Partly because there's a bit of freedom in character creation to pick up few "out of class" skills: it's pretty easy to be a fighter/thief, for example. Also, there are generally multiple ways to overcome any problem. And you can always choose to use beginner's luck to make a skill roll for a skill you don't have.

Keep in mind that when you have overlapping skills in the group, you can always count on helping dice from the others, so you can take on much tougher challenges. If you're the only one in the group with a skill, you might have a tough time succeeding.

Anyone mind if I take Dungeoneering as my specialty? (It'll be at 4.)

I don't mind if you take Dungeoneering. First come, first serve!

Also I got those player decks in the mail. There were only four though, not five as I thought. I addressed it to your actual name. Names I considered, but ultimately did not put on the package:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
- House of Vacuuming
- Short Round Nguyen
- I Choose Google Hangouts Over My Family Nguyen
- At Least I'm Not At A Bar Nguyen

Those last two would make good ship names in an Ian M. Banks novel.

I am devoting tonight to making my TB character. Except I have to make my "go bag" tonight as well.

Apparently the male partners of the female are specifically asked to bring swim trunks and sleepwear. On account of, in the past, nurses have walked into the birthing rooms and found the male partners just hanging out in the altogether. Apparently they are only okay with seeing nekkid wymynfolk. Discrimination!

Anyway, I have no idea what character type I'm going to choose. Not Human Thief, because that's what I was in Rick's game. Not dwarf, because Alex would play a superior dwarf in every way.

If Steve is going with a non-magicky character, as recommended, then I will probably go with a magician or a cleric. I think.

Short Round

My nemesis. The perfect example of the worst kind of asian sidekick, setting my people back 1,000 years.

Instead of "Khaaaan!" I scream "Shoooooooooooooort...! [gasp for breath] Round."

Anyways it's nice to know you guys know me as well as a stalker would.
Now give me your paypal address for the deck.

I kind of resent the implication that I am not a stalker.

Anyway, don't worry about it. You can pay it forward by mailing Steve a deck if he decides he wants to go that route.

Edit: What's the best kind of Asian sidekick? NB: the guy from BTILC is not actually the sidekick, he's the hero.

Dammit! I spent so long trying to remain anonymous on this site....

Go nuts with dungeoneering! Sounds like a hard job, so better you than me.

I'm thinking halfling burglar at this point. I don't know why, and I'm a little ashamed of it, but it appeals.

As for Asians depicted well on film, don't forget Long Duk Dong. I think he really gives Short Round a run for his money! Eyiyiyi...I'm surprised they still show that one on cable.

In particular my Belief and Instinct will probably change. It's such an ethereal exercise writing these. Just like Fate aspects it seems like an art to write good ones that'll help and hinder in play.

Do y'all remember off-hand if infravision is a thing in Torchbearer?
I think it's not for the playable stock.

Also, is anyone gearing up with a tinder box?

This kind of hopeful optimism is quite touching.

Torchbearer gives away nothing except pain, misery, and a side helping of pig's feet. Don't like pig's feet? Well then pain and misery will be your only companions.

USP45 wrote:

I should think everyone will want to pack a tinderbox. Ben may be an urbane and friendly guy -- I'm sure he is -- but when he's running Torchbearer rumour has it that he turns into a Chaos Monkey of Wickedness, one who will delight in ruining the party's tinderbox if they've only packed one.

I'm looking forward to your reports of how brutally Ben is sticking it to your adventuring scum. Game on!

Gosh Pete, this game sure sounds like fun!

Here's the first part of my character...waiting on a second wise to know more about the world/game, need to read about gear (and weapons, spear was just a guess), and very likely need work on the belief and instinct.

Can halflings have a helmet? It says you can choose one if you don't take a shield for your additional weapon, but halflings don't actually get that choice.
