Of all the entries for creatures that are listed in the Monster Manual (D&D 5e), the one that stands out the most to me is the Giant Goat.

Given the prevalence of entries for giant animals, I can imagine a scenario based around the player characters being shrunk down to a smaller size... on a farm? ...with animals that are for some reason particularly antagonistic to small people?

No, that's not right either.

I tell you what, help me out here and I'll reward you.

Post your ideas for scenarios involving the use of one or more giant goats. The best entry wins 10 bag. Let's cap this at a month: closing date for entries is 29 October 2014.

Don't have a copy of the Monster Manual? Not to worry. This entry is in the Dungeon Master's Basic Rules too, which is a free PDF.

How big is Giant? I'm imagining Mr Staypuff type size - as such...A clan of gnomes have come to marvel at the Giant Goat. Amidst their goggling one of them mentions how it would be great to be the first to view the world from the top of it's head. And so the Giant Goat climbing race was born. Imagine a mash up between the Gumball Rally and Shadow of the colossus. Can you be the first gnome to ascend. fighting off gnats and ticks along the way and dealing with a landscape that is constantly shifting and of course the trickery mischief of your fellow gnomes.

Too silly?

It's in the "Large" size category, which for a sense of scale includes brown bears, camels, crocodiles, horses, lions, polar bears, rhinos, and tigers. Smaller than an elephant (which is "Huge").

Which is part of the oddity of the entry. It's big enough to be awkward, but not big enough to be incredibly fantastic.

While on the road or stopped at a village, one of the villagers asks the players for help. The village, a comfortable place with wooden cottages and thatched roofs, is being threatened by an ill-tempered goatherd named Ralishaz.

Ralishaz was never popular in the village and now has the power to make them regret being mean to him. For their part the villagers say he smelled and was usually dirty and had the manners of a goat. The men chided him and the women ignored him.

About a week ago he and his herd were in a new and very rich pasture for a few days. Little did they know that the pasture and the stream they drank from were magical! Rali and his goats grew to enormous size.

Rali decided to put his new size to good use. He retuned to the village to take his fill of food and drink. When the local sheriff complained Rali and his goats knocked his house down and the goats ate the roof and some of the contents. He laughed and laughed and told the villagers he would be sheriff from now on. He took over the inn and kept his goats in the stable.

In the morning he realized he had a problem -- he was normal sized again! He snuck down to the stables and found the goats were smaller but still larger than average. He realized he needed to get back to the pasture to grit big again. On his way out he ran into the sheriff who tried to arrest him but was trampled by the goats. He survived but Ralishaz promised he'd be back and this time he'd raze the whole village.

The party arrives in town while they prepare for his return. The villagers fear the goats more than they do him. A few butts was all it took for the goats to destroy the sheriff's house and the fear the whole village will be ruined.

The encounter is Ralishaz ( treat him like an ogre) and as many giant goats as you think your group can handle.

Ok how about an escort mission.

The local lord has managed to secure his daughter's hand in marriage to a son of the area's Archduke. The cost? A dowry of 10 Giant Goats. You and your companions have been hired by the lord to transport the goats to the Archduke's domain which just happens to be on the other side of a treacherous jungle. Can you manage to safely herd the goats, keeping them together and safe from native beasts and felons.

Black bears are "medium", the same as a normal goat. I would rather face one giant goat than 10 black bears.

TIL real-life makes some big freaking goats. 30kgs up to ... 300kg in some breeds. Black bears are pretty wimpy as bears go, about 50-250kg. They're really just giant dogs at that point.

Now polar bears, those are serious business: tipping the scale at as much as 300kg female, 700kg male.

The town of Reston has latel been plagued by a tribe of chupacabras. These horrible beasts have ravaged the town's famous goat herds and left the future of the goat cheese festival in peril.

The townsfolk are no match for the creatures in a fair fight and thus far only a pair have been killed when they sucked the blood from poisoned goats. The chupacabras seem to have picked up on this now and suck the goats one at a time.

There is only one solution they can see: they need a goat so large and so tasty that no chupacabras can resist. Korthas, a sage who lives in town, believes there is a herd of giant goats in the valley of Strathmore which lies two days north.

The townsfolk feel this is their only chance and will offe a group of adventurers a lifetime supply of goat cheese if they can bring back at least one live giant goat. They can offer a guide and a goatherd if pressed. They are also reluctantly open to other ways to get rid of the chupacabras but clearly favor the giant goat gambit.

A strange plague descended upon the Barony of Malinore and swiftly killed every equine in the kingdom. The barony is renowned for its cavalry and if their enemies knew of this issue they would doubtless attack.

The players have been recruited to help train their new mounts: giant goats. The goats are tough and strong but aren't yet used to war or riders. The players will be called on to use a variety of skills to train the goats. Some will ride them, some will care for them. Wizards might be asked to see which spells the goats can adapt to while others will train them to not spook when magic is used near them. Some may be charged with rooting out spies and protecting the secret of the plague and the goats. Each character should have some part in helping to train the soon to be justly feared War Goats of Malinore!

Here is a quick one. Who says those ancient religion classes would never come in usefull?
=====================================================================
Appropriate for a group of 3-4 levels 2-3.

After a particularly violent thunderstorm three nights ago pair of giant goats appeared and began tearing the area up.

If the PCs investigate they will on a DC 10 Perception check find the wreckage of a chariot in the forest. There are giant goat tracks leading to and away from the site repeatedly. A DC 15 Perception or Survival check to discern the tracks of a person leading away from the site into the forest. Three more checks will lead the PCs off into the woods where they will find a powerfull looking barbarian with a hammer unconcious. There are scorch marks on his back and arms. The hammer is supernaturally heavy, requiring a STR of 20 to lift and a STR save to swing.

Also on a DC 8 check the PCs will come across the booted footprints of a giant and evidence of trees having been pushed aside to make way.

The goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr, are looking for their master and while smarter than the average goat (INT 6) they are still a bit confused from the crash and excessively aggressive if provoked. Their thick fur gives them resistance to piercing attacks. But they are vulnerable to bludgeoning. They will calm down if the PCs can speak with them or lead them to the barbarian.

The Fire giant Lágrbruni Darraðrhandleggr is also in the forest and also searching for the warrior whom he ambushed during the storm which is the last place one would have expected a fire giant. He has through luck and study learned a bit of giant magic and can cast a firebolt three times per day doing 3d10 damage in his hands. +5 to hit. No INT bonus.

Depending on which lead the PCs follow events can play out several ways.

Following the goat tracks will lead them to the pair casting about for signs of their master. They will not automatically attack the PCs unless threatened. With their help in tracking the PCs can gain advantage for following the barbarian or giant tracks.

If the PCs find the barbarian then he will be unconcious even if healed. He is currently at 5 HP. He will need rest for two more days before reviving. The goats will find them as the group is transporting the warrior to the nearest village or scouting the area. The giant will find everyone four rounds later. The warrior and the goats will vanish that night.

If the group finds the giant and defeat him then no sighting of the goats or barbarian will occur. The characters may make of that what they will.

Assuming Lágrbruni is defeated then a week later each PCs most used weapon will gain a permanent +1 vs giants.

The group has hired on as caravan guards in the service Bycer, a noted caravan master and the only man who can use the dreaded Path of Clouds. The path is notoriously treacherous and whole regiments have died attempting the crossing.

Bycer's secret is, of course, giant goats. He transfers his cargo at the entrance to the path and again when he exits.

The players could be along as drovers or guards. They could be loyal or loyal to the gold. They could also be working for another caravan master to learn Bycer's secret or to betray him in an ambush.

The PC's come upon the mountain village of Toggenburg, which is holding it's annual festival celebrating the founding of the village by Peter the Goatherd over 300 years ago.

Legend has it that Peter the Goatherd saved the Nanny and Billy of all goats from the attack of a great direwolf and as a reward for saving them they gave to Peter their offspring, a herd of giant goats of great size. The villagers still herd and breed giant goats to this day.

The festival includes several competitions that are keenly contested by the locals. Anyone is allowed to enter any of the events and there is a monetary reward for the winners of each event.

The Toggenburg Derby - Ride a giant goat in a one mile race around a bumpy course. Medals awarded and prizes for first three places.

Ride 'Em Goatherd! - Who can stay longest on Crotchet, the meanest grumpiest giant goat in town.

Hunt the Wild Giant Goat - Contest to climb into the mountains and to kill and bring back a wild giant goat. Teams can enter the contest and all goats killed are eaten at the evening feast.

The sharp and unscrupulous Knevin Stern is organising betting on the Toggenburg Derby and has subtely drugged the 'favourite' (this may increase a PC's chance of winning.).

A direwolf attacks a group of teenage villagers out on their first wild giant goat hunt.

The festival ends with a feast and prize giving in the village square. The winner of Toggenburg Deby is rewarded with a giant goatskin coat and goat horned hat. If you wish to imbue this reward with the slight odour of goat but with a minor bonus of some sort (Ride Goat ability, +1 Ride etc) go ahead.

OK one more silly one for you.

The wild goats of Par Gravon live a happy life. Lush grass to eat, beautiful rolling hills to wander and frolic in and the best herd of fellow goats you could ask for. All was idyllic ..until the wolves came. One by one the herd are disappearing. For the sanctity of all the herd Elders have sent word to a secret cabal of warrior goats for help. That is where you, dear player come in. As one of the warrior Giant Goat caste you must come and protect the hill lands and rid them of the vulpine threat. Each player creates a Giant Goat character but can only attribute melee classes to them (barbarian Giant Goat, Monk Giant Goat, Brawler Giant Goat etc) and only have natural weapons of horns and hooves, Kicks and butts. Now the very silly bit - players are only alllowed to communicate with each other in bleats and bahs (They can communicate with the GM normally but not aloud)

Mouse Guard meets Seven Samurai meets charades.
