I've got some straight-up text templates uploaded as files in various rpgitem entries.

For example: GSS, Fate Core, Lamentations

Would that sort of thing be helpful here? (Because it's straight up text for ease of editing and off-line usage.) There's no code beyond [ c ] [ /c ].

Some thoughts:

Having it attached to the rpgitem itself is obviously helpful for folks who are already at the game they want to play.
The files functionality of the site already takes versioning into account.
Having it there as well as here creates duplicate data and the chance for things to get out of sync.

For that third one I wonder if a link from here to the source would be a workable thing.

In any case, lemme know what you want.

Some great thoughts on moving forward with PbF character sheet templates...

E Posting templates in RPG Items : I agree with you that this is a great step in having the templates accessible when the GM/DM links their RPG to the core RPG Item (core rules version section, easier to centralizing posting vice in every module).

W File uploads : A good idea but then it comes to what format. A standard ascii text format file is good for generic fields but may cause readibility issues for some users. A file upload in .doc or .txt format with the BBcode is also a good format as well. Yes, there is version control in file uploading but I wonder if each GM/DM will uniquely tweak a template for their sessions anyway - hence, a full template can be edited for that session use in the manner that best suits the activities of the GM.

cry Sync of files, forums, geeklists of templates : Already beginning to be an issue and this takes me back to how to best centralize and consolidate Play-by-Forum information that is sprinkled all over RPGgeek. Yes, the template issue can be resolved within the RPG Item postings but knowing what template is where needs to still be shared with all geeks hereabouts.

So this brings me back to the mention in this post about a Play-by-Forum Guild to help centralize existing data on RPGG as well as centralize lists of where geeks can find information for PbF on the site. We may need to move into an RFC (Request for Comment) to see what the community thinks.

BTW, @USP45 - I greatly appreciate your contributions. This is all a great first step and helps us address some important ways ahead for PbF on RPGG!

cry Sync of files, forums, geeklists of templates : Already beginning to be an issue and this takes me back to how to best centralize and consolidate Play-by-Forum information that is sprinkled all over RPGgeek. Yes, the template issue can be resolved within the RPG Item postings but knowing what template is where needs to still be shared with all geeks hereabouts.

Creating a Trail of Cthulhu Investigator

I edited the material found on Pelgrane Press' Page XX blog to write this summary of steps for creating your character. You have two choices: you can use the Online Character Generator (“OCG”), or (if you have a copy of the Trail of Cthulhu rulebook), print out a blank character sheet and open the rulebook to page 9. I’ve tried to put both rulebook page number references as well as Online Character Generator instructions below. Let me know if something’s wrong, I’ll fix it.

CLICK HERE to access the online character generator (“OCG”). You will need to register before you can use it. Everything is free, there’s no spam, etc. Once you’re in, scroll down and click the link for “Trail of Cthulhu”, where you’ll find the green “Create” button next to the words “New Investigator”.

STEPS FOR CHARACTER CREATION

Step One: What do you do for a living?
1. Give yourself a name. Your name should make it easy for your fellow players to know what you’re about.
2. Choose a gender: male, female, or whichever gender description you’re ready to roleplay.
3. Optionally use the “character concept” box to write a phrase that quickly describes the investigator.
4. Choose an Occupation (from the OCG’s pull-down list, or from the list on page 9 of the rulebook).
5. Take note of your Occupational Abilities. These are the skills you’ve acquired in your chosen Occupation.
a. If using pencil and paper, place an asterisk next to Occupational abilities listed in the rulebook for your chosen occupation.
b. If you’re using the OCG, your Occupational abilities will have a black-briefcase icon next to them. If you also see some grey briefcase icons, look at the text below your Occupation box. It will tell you how many of the grey-icon skills you can choose from as occupational abilities.
6. Take note of your Credit Rating, based on your Occupation. If using the rulebook, write the lower number of the range on your character sheet. If using the OCG, your credit rating already has its minimum value shown in the Credit Rating box.

Step Two: What motivates you?
If using the rulebook, choose an appropriate Drive from the list on page 19. If using the OCG, pick a Drive from the pull-down list at the top.

Step Three: Spend points on your Investigative and General Abilities

If you’re using the OCG:
1. The left half of the sheet lists your Investigative Abilities. You have a pool of points that you can allocate among them. The points you can allocate are shown underneath the “Investigative Skills” heading, where it says, “Points to spend: 16 of 16” or something like that.
2. Your GM will tell you how many Investigative points to spend. In general, 4+ players is 16 points.
3. Choose a skill and click the (+) sign to spend points to increase that ability.
4. You’ll rarely need to spend more than 3 or 4 points on an Investigative Ability.
5. Abilities that have a black briefcase icon next to them cost only 1/2 a point each.
6. Spend all your points so it says, “Points to spend: 0 of 16” or something like that.
7. Repeat the process for the General Skills on the right. You have 65 points to allocate.
8. You should have at least 8 points each in Health, Sanity, and Stability.
9. Your second-highest General Ability rating must be equal to at least 1/2 your highest General Ability rating.
10. See the “General Guidelines for the Specific Skills” section below.

If you’re using the rulebook:
1. Your character begins with 1 free point in Stability, 1 free point in Health, and 4 free points of Sanity.
2. Your character begins with the lower value of his Occupation’s Credit Rating score for free.
3. Occupational Abilities are at a 1 for 2 basis; so 1 build point provides 2 points to an Ability.
4. Your Investigative ability point total depends on the number of player characters in the group. See page 23 for the total beginning build points (16 points for 4+ players).
5. You’ll rarely need to spend more than 3 or 4 points on an Investigative Ability.
6. You can spend 65 points on any General Abilities.
7. You should have at least 8 points in Abilities like Health, Sanity, and Stability. Depending on your character concept, you may wish to have a rating of 8 or more points in Athletics, Firearms, Scuffling, or Weapons.
8. Your second-highest General Ability rating must be equal to at least 1/2 your highest General Ability rating.
9. See the “General Guidelines for the Specific Skills” section below.

General Guidelines for the Specific Skills
- Art: Each point in Art indicates a different type of art. You can decide what these are during the game, not now.
- Athletics: If Athletics is 8+, your character’s Hit Threshold is 4, rather than 3, making him harder to hit in combat.
- Craft: Each point in Craft indicates a different type of craft skill. You can decide what these are during the game, not now.
- Credit Rating: Credit Rating is an Occupational skill only for Dilettantes. You can trade in Credit Rating points at a 1 for 1 basis for additional Investigative Ability points, with the Keeper’s approval. You can improve Credit Rating up to the Occupational total at a 1 for 1 point basis, and beyond that at a 2 for 1 basis.
- Cthulhu Mythos: You cannot begin with any points of Cthulhu Mythos, unless the Keeper approves it.
- Fleeing: If your Fleeing rating is more than twice your final Athletics rating, each point of Fleeing can be purchased at a rate of 1 for 2 points.
- Languages: Each point in Languages indicates an additional language your character is fluent in. You can decide what these are during the game, not now.
- Law: At a rating of 2+, your character may be a bar-certified attorney.
- Mechanical Repair: Each point in Mechanical Repair indicates the ability to drive or operate a different type of heavy machinery. You can decide what these are during the game, not now.
- Medicine: At a rating of 2+, your character may have a medical license.
- Piloting: A single point of Piloting indicates the ability to pilot small boats or aircraft (choose one). Every 2 additional points indicates an additional type of vehicle of the same type. You can decide what these are during the game, not now.
- Sanity: If you have any Cthulhu Mythos rating, your Sanity can never be higher than 10 minus the rating in Cthulhu Mythos (otherwise, it can be as high as desired).

Step Four: What keeps you happy, and what keeps you sane
1. Sources of Stability: For every 3 full points of Stability, identify one person that helps define your character’s sense of self. Write his or her name and an identifying phrase on your character sheet. If you have the rulebook, see page 48 for more detail. Good examples are your spouse, priest, parents, etc.
2. Pillars of Sanity: For every 3 full points of Sanity, you must choose a Pillar of Sanity (described on page 46 of the rulebook). There’s a great thread found here that lists plenty of examples.
3. Stability is your “grim resolve”. You will lose stability, but also gain it back. Sanity is much more serious. If you lose sanity points in your investigations you’ll find your belief in the world crumbling, especially if one of your Pillars fails you or is proven wrong.

Step Five (optional)
For every point in Bureaucracy, Cop Talk, Credit Rating, Streetwise, and any other Ability that may require a professional contact. The Keeper may require you to define your character’s contact with a name, identity, and location. See page 31 in the rulebook for more information. These do not necessarily have to be declared at character creation. One of these contacts may be an intimate correspondent, also described on page 31.

If I have a new version of an existing sheet, it's best to overwrite my current with the new version yeah?

Good question... I guess it would depend on if the system versions a different enough that the sessions require the unique character sheet. I just started CoC version 7 and there are a lot of unique changes that require a new sheet. But if players want to run version 6 they would still need that sheet because of the changes.

If the system versioning is where it overwrites the previous then an edit is probably the best option version multiple versions. In other words, if a player will need that specific character sheet for the version then keep it and post new version.
