Welcome to the official Player Sign-Ups for Virtuacon 2013!

Virtuacon is the gaming convention you attend from the comfort of your own home. It is happening Friday October 18th through Sunday October 20th, 2013. Like traditional conventions, we've got industry speakers, plenty of slotted gaming events, contests, and $2000 in prizes thanks to our generous sponsors! Our focus is on Role-Playing games, but if you've played and enjoyed games like Castle Ravenloft, Shadow Hunters or Shadows over Camelot, you are sure to find some amazing adventure in Role-Playing. This is the real deal - experienced Game Masters at the top of their craft to run you through a carefully selected set of adventures. Don't miss this opportunity for a live Role-Playing gaming session!

What Equipment Do I Need?
Virtuacon is powered by Google Hangouts. With Hangouts, we can voice/video chat as if we were at a real table together. In addition, some games will make use of an app that runs in Google Hangouts called Roll20 - this allows tabletop maps, character tokens and die rolling capabilities. You don't need much to participate - any modern computer with a microphone will do. See our Tech Setup page for details.

Cost to Attend
Virtuacon is free - we would love to have you come celebrate our hobby and be part of the experience.

Just like more traditional conventions, the signature gaming events require that you sign-up ahead of time. That's what this post is all about.

How to Sign Up
We are currently offering 85 games which you can see here: Virtuacon '13 - Player Signup
(4 geeklist pages worth so be sure to check it all out)

If you want a guaranteed seat at the game, post a comment directly under the geeklist item that represents the game you want to play. Every game showcases the level of expertise required to play (most are newbie friendly) as well as the time commitment (most are 4 hours, some shorter and a few longer). They also showcase the maximum number of seats at the virtual table. Once the table fills, no more players can sign-up for that game. Do not sign up for more than one game in a given time-slot. It's first come, first served.

Be aware that this is a firm commitment on your part. The GMs and Event Organizers have gone through a great deal of effort to put together these games - and not showing for your game is very uncool. It makes it less fun for the other players and the GM so please be serious about being on time for your game.

The games are listed by Time-Slot and are always in UTC. See the next post below for the full list of time-slots for Virtuacon as well as conversions for a location (hopefully) near you.

If you don't manage to get in on a slotted game event, rest assured there will be pick-up games throughout the weekend as well as other ways to join in the fun. But we strongly recommend you get a slotted seat so you know you'll be playing something great!

Okay, I've signed up. What next?
Sit back and relax for a bit. Shortly after sign-ups, we will be sending you a Geek Mail (which is the Geek's internal mailbox - if you don't know what this is, click here). The Geek Mail will point you to our Virtuacon13 G+ Community where we will be coordinating events. Please join that community as soon as possible.

If you need help getting running on Google + and Hangouts... click here.

On-Air?
Each game indicates whether it will broadcast "On-Air". This was decided by the GM when they put their game together. Games that broadcast "On-Air" will be viewable by the public and recorded for playback on You Tube. Showcasing our hobby is really cool - and I'm psyched that we'll have some exposure here! If you are shy about such things, steer clear of On-Air games.

Pathfinder Society
You may notice the high volume of Pathfinder Society Organized Play (PFS) games. PFS is a massive, worldwide fantasy role-playing campaign which uses a standardized set of rules evolved from the 3.5 version of the world’s oldest role-playing game. In PFS, each player takes on the role of an adventurer in search of knowledge, history, treasure, and fame, in a rich and diverse campaign setting, which is shared by thousands of others. All players play in the same world, with the same set of rules, allowing them to take their characters to different tables, with different GMs and players, and still have similar experiences, including regular character advancement. There are plenty of PFS games scheduled to be run here at Virtuacon 2013, for new and experienced players alike. If you are new to PFS, please, sign up for one of the many tables which allow beginners. You will be provided with a pre-generated character and instructions on how to obtain a PFS ID number, which you can use for any PFS game. Alternately, for those of you with some ambition, you can create your own PFS Legal Character and register it with Paizo. Since it would be a Level 1 character, you can participate with it in any Tier 1 or Sub-Tier 1-2 scenarios at Virtuacon. We will be posting a thread in the coming weeks to help players who want to bring their own custom character to the event.

At the end of each scenario in which you play, you will leave with character credit you can apply to a new character, information on how to apply this credit, and possibly a prize.

Virtual Swag
We have some beautiful microbadges for the event which you can see below:

mb - Virtuacon '13 - Oct 18-20th, 2013 at RPG Geek! (Given to all participants)
mb - Virtuacon '13 - Game Master (Given to Game Masters)
mb - Virtuacon '13 - Event Staff (For those running the event)
mb - Virtuacon '13 - Contest Creator (For those creating contests for the event)
mb - Virtuacon '13 - Event Champion (the lucky few!)

Confused?
Still not sure what Virtuacon '13 is? Just check out our Virtuacon13 wiki for all the details.

Feel free to ask any questions below.

Q&A / FAQ

We have a page dedicated to the equipment and tool setup for Virtuacon. For a GM, it's pretty easy to get things setup. For a player, it's even easier. Check out Virtuacon '13 Tech Setup page which is dedicated to getting you in the game!

We will be running tech-trials over the coming weeks/months to ensure that all players know their equipment will work and to give them a feel for how to navigate the game online. We have a mock game ready to go and will be opening it up with various "Mock GMs" who can help potential players get their equipment checked out. Stay tuned.

If you want to sign up as an alternate for any game, feel free. It's not a commitment on anyone's part, but it gives the GM some flexibility if someone drops out to slide in an alternate of their choosing.

There will be some open "pick up" gaming throughout the weekend in addition to these scheduled gaming events. So even if you don't get an official seat at a game, all is not lost!

Ideally we wanted to have all of the events (games, contests and industry speakers) all set before player sign-ups. Otherwise it's possible you will book yourself into a game slot when your favorite designer is speaking. Unfortunately, we ran into a little thing called GenCon which took many of our speakers out of circulation just before these sign-ups take place. So we will get those speaking slots filled shortly and even if you miss a talk, they will be captured and available on YouTube for later viewing.

Players may sign up for as many games as they like (so long as none overlap time-wise). Just be committed to showing up!

GMs may play in other games on time-slots where they are not Game Mastering.

We have some clearly laid out Etiquette Rules for the event. Read them. Follow them. Seriously.

Users who have been tossed out of any previous site-wide event I've run are ineligible to participate at Virtuacon.

Yep indeed thanks for the help.

I guess for the next one i'll have to pay more attention and sign up to run an iron kingdoms game so more people can play it.

I have a basic headset and that has worked perfectly.

Webcam is not mandatory, but I guess it's nicer if everyone can see each other

There is a "What Equipment Will I Need?" section of our Virtuacon Tech Setup page. But yes, I use a simple $30 USB attached Logitech webcam and it works fine. An iPad will work as will most laptops in the modern era (if your laptop has a little tiny hole centered above the screen it might have a built-in microphone/camera).

I had the ego to believe my table would be an early fill. I've got 3 seats left! I'd blame it on lack of love for the old school but Si's AD&D game filled up quickly!

Anyway... Plenty of great gaming still out there.

Definitely great to see the new folks. I wasn't sure what to expect - other site wide events like the Play-by-Forum Initiative filled very quickly - within 2 days. I'm guessing this will take longer and maybe that's okay. It's a different kind of event - and a real time commitment (yes, we realize a block of 4 hours is significant) but I think the camaraderie of being part of a world-wide convention with your fellow geeks is way beyond cool. I hope more people jump in and take advantage of the games being offered and are part of the experience.

Unrelated, there is a Werewolf game (the only brave GM from the Boardgame side!) in Slot-F that I want to play in pretty badly but I'm running my game in the same time-slot. I'll probably take a seat in a game if things don't max out.

I figured I'd miss the Numenera sign up. I'll look for a Pathfinder one.

I think I got that hangout thing working. I have a webcam with a microphone on it and I have a large microphone. I got the plugin to work on google, not on firefox, got the video to work, and it seems to be able to pick up sound but I don't see a way to be able to hear myself so I don't know how loud or quiet I am or if I should use my other microphone.

Unrelated, there is a Werewolf game (the only brave GM from the Boardgame side!) in Slot-F that I want to play in pretty badly but I'm running my game in the same time-slot. I'll probably take a seat in a game if things don't max out.

I know! I would love to try this, but Si's game is in Slot F also. Next time!

Sad that I won't be playing in a game this year, but still super excited about this event. I'll be watching from the sideline and cheering for everyone!
