Welcome to the Out-of-character thread for the D&D Basic adventure The Lost City (B4). We will be using the Labyrinth Lord Core Rules, with some tweaks.

Okay. Let's roll up some characters. Make six 3d6 rolls using the Geek Die Roller, assigning them in this order: STR, INT, WIS, DEX, CON, CHR.

What's that you say? You wanted to be a fighter, but your Strength stinks? Okay. You can deduct two points from another ability to raise your class's prime requisite by 1. You can do this as many times as you like, but you cannot lower an ability score below 9 (it can naturally be below 9, but you cannot adjust it lower than 9). Also DEX cannot be lowered, only raised. Constitution and Charisma cannot be raised or lowered in any way.

What's that now? ALL your scores stink? Okay, you can reroll all your scores if you have no score over 9 or if you have at least two scores 6 or lower, but you must reroll scores in order.

Still not happy? Let me know. We might be able to work something out. I want everyone to be able to play the character they want, but also want to keep the spirit of the original Red Box D&D version alive.

Okay now roll the die for you class's HP. If you roll a 1 or a 2, roll again.

Now roll 3d8 and multiply it by 10. That is your starting GP. Buy equipment according to the prices in the Labyrinth Lord Core Rules. Something not there? Let me know. If it could be reasonably found in a normal town, I will come up with a price.

Please do all your rolling in this thread. Once I see that most everybody has rolled, I will set up the GeekList where we will store the characters.

Once you get the numbers firmed up. You can start entering your characters on the GeekList below. Just add an item and put your char sheet in the comments section:

I'll do an example here. Let's say I want to be a fighter. First I roll up my scores in order:

STR 3d6 = (1 + 5 + 3) = 9
INT 3d6 = (4 + 6 + 1) = 11
WIS 3d6 = (6 + 5 + 1) = 12
DEX 3d6 = (6 + 3 + 6) = 15
CON 3d6 = (2 + 4 + 6) = 12
CHR 3d6 = (3 + 6 + 2) = 11

Hmmm. Not great, but I can exchange 2 WIS for 1 STR, as well as 2 INT for 1 STR, so then I have:

STR 11
INT 9
WIS 10
DEX 15
CON 12
CHR 11

Okay, average STR, but my DEX gives me -1 to AC and +1 to Missile attacks, so maybe I will be more of an agile fighter type. Or maybe I will opt to be a thief, so I can get that XP bonus.

But let's say, I want to be an average fighter. Then I roll up HP. For fighters, it's a 1d8:

HP 1d8 = (6) = 6

Not bad.

Then I see what kind of gold I have:
Gold 3d8*10 = (6 + 1 + 3) * 10 = 100

Okay. Enough to get some chainmail, a shield, a battleaxe and have enough left over for some adventuring gear.

That's just an example. Let's see what you come up with.

If you want to get your DEX up to 18, you an exchange 2 INT and 2 WIS, but that is totally up to you; just wanted to let you know your options.

Just a note for any of you fighters & clerics out there: Labyrinth Lord lists the price of plate mail as 450 gp. Their prices skew a little higher than D&D sometimes because they let you start with more gold, but I think 450 is just insane. I am lowering the price of plate mail to 105 gp.

Since one of you has already started rolling his character, I have set up the GeekList where we will store & update the characters. You can find it here:

Since you rolled two ability scores 6 and under, you have the option of re-rolling a new set of all six stats. You can still keep you HP & Gold rolls. It's up to you if you want to, but it won't hurt, because if the second set is not cleric-friendly, you can always go back to the first set.

HP IncHulkFan previously rolled 1d4-1 = (3) - 1 = 2

Gold IncHulkFan previously rolled 1d8 + 1d8 + 1d8 = (8) + (2) + (3) = 13 x 10 = 130

Let's say you rolled a 4. That way, with your CON modifier, you at least have 3. I want everyone to have at least 3 HP, so they're not so fragile. The dungeon can be a dangerous place!

I don't think it would be a problem. I am thinking it would do 1d4 damage, and you could only use it if you came at a creature from behind. Also, it'd have to be a 2-handed weapon. I'll have to figure out a price, but I don't see it being more than 2gp. What do you think?

are we worrying about weight?

I will be using emcumbrance, but I don't want everyone to have to obsessively track it. I will probably figure out a base weight for adventuring gear & add that to your armor, shield, weapons & coins. I am doing this mainly so I can see how fast everyone moves.

If anyone ever gets close to being overencumbered (e.g., your char can't move!) I will let you know so you start making adjustments.

But you don;t have to track your emcumbrance or list the weight of every item you buy, and with starting gear, weapons & armor, I don't think anyone has to worry about being overencumbered.

Now if your char falls into a deep pool of water while wearing plate mail, THAT is a different story.

I was playing in "The Caverns of Thracia" run by Brian Leet (PghArch) last year. Owl started and died in that (new char was Goraxe the Dwarf who will replace Owl if he dies here LOL), so I've had experience using him before in a similar game (stats re-rolled for this one as you saw). Just to let you know, I am not the kind of GM that TRIES to kill players, but D&D Basic itself can be kind of unforgiving. Remember the old adage, "Those who fight and run away, live to fight another day." (Actually quoted in the Red Box PHB!)

Keep the strong guys in front (and maybe in back too!), keep the magic users out of melee, and let the thieves sneak around & backstab.

That said, if one of my monsters has a choice in melee, he probably won't go after the guy with only 1 HP left, but sometimes a single blow will kill someone who is at full power or there are things in D&D modules that will kill you outright if you miss a saving throw.

We'll see how it goes. If way too many people die too quickly, we will make changes, like letting every new character start at full power, or having the party find a cache of healing potions. I want to let the leveling up unfold naturally, but there are other changes we can make if it starts becoming a slaughter.

Nope, it means that if we kill a bugbear worth 100XP you would get 100XP + 10% = 110XP

WIS 3d6 = (6 + 2 + 6) = 14
DEX 3d6 = (6 + 4 + 6) = 16
CON 3d6 = (6 + 5 + 4) = 15
CHA 3d6 = (3 + 3 + 2) = 8

HP 1d6 = (1) = 1 + 1 (Con bonus) = Another re-roll = 1d6 = (2) = 2 + 1 = And again = 1d6 = (4) = 4
So HP = 5
