The group, fresh from their success in the ruins beneath Thornkeep, find a message waiting for them at the Greenforest Inn, where they have rooms.

"Came in for you a couple days ago. I kept it safe and sealed,"

Shandar, the proprietor said quietly as he set a small box down with the group's breakfast at a quiet table. Tapping his nose for luck, he adds
"Pathfinder business, I've no doubt, looking at that seal. Good fortune to you lot, you've been good to have around--no troubles here while word spread you were staying. I wish you luck in your next adventure!"

Shandar discretely steps away from the group, and resumes the disinterested gaze of tavern owners everywhere striving to provide privacy for guests.

The wooden box is sealed with wax, the imprint of the Pathfinder Society pressed into it. After briefly checking it over for sabotage and finding no problems, the group opens it find a scroll, and four letters. One with the seal of the Silver Crusade, one Andoran, one from the Grand Lodge, and the largest letter, unsealed.

The unsealed letter, written in an educated hand and put to very nice paper, reads:

Fellow Pathfinders,

First let me congratulate you on your successes in Thornkeep! Your discoveries there are remarkable, and there are many eager to hear more. While I am loathe to interrupt your efforts there, something has come up that I believe your group is well suited to handle.

The Society seeks your assistance in a matter most urgent. Recent engineering works uncovered a series of lost chambers beneath the dwarven Sky Citadel Janderhoff, but the company that began exploration and refurbishment of this space soon encountered trap-related difficulties.

I quickly assembled a group of nearby agents staying Magnimar to explore the lost corridors in exchange for a brief window of time in which to study anything found within. I have not heard back from those agents, and a contact has informed me that the team has been missing for two days, prompting the Mithral Mallet Mining Company to send a team of its own specialists to find out what became of them. Nobody has heard from either group since.

It is rare that we have an opportunity to document the interior of a Sky Citadel, so your task is twofold. First, find out what happened to the first team of Pathfinders. Second, explore the recently reopened chambers, and recover or document any historical treasures found within. I doubt that representatives of the Mithral Mallet will be pleased to see additional Pathfinders, so contact Rukha Borthwick, the
sister-in-law of one of our agents in the first team. She is a resourceful dwarf and likely knows what steps to take to get you into those ruins.

The Pathfinders that delivered this box has been told to hire a wagon to return anything you may have discovered back to Absalom, so your group can head directly for Varisia. They shouldn't be hard to find, I told them to not let the box out of their sight, they are led by a halfling woman, Rhonda.

Luck be yours, Pathfinders,

Sheila Heidmarch, Venture Captain
Magnimar, Varisia

P.S. Included is some background you may enjoy during your travel to Janderhoff, as well as a few missives from your faction leaders.

Pausing to look around the inn, a young halfling woman makes eye contact with the group and smiles. Seated at a far table by the door, she pulls up her sleeve to reveal a wayfinder on her left forearm, then returns to her food as though she's just another guest.

The group passes out the faction letters approriately to each person, well-used to system of missions-within-missions by now.

Andoran Letter:
Spoiler (click to reveal)

Fellow Supporter of Freedom,

Dwarves are not egalitarian, and it might be more irreverently said that they’re stuck in their ways. Show them that equality born of many voices can also be worthy of respect. As you negotiate passage through their Sky Citadel, ensure not only that the dwarves are impressed but also that your companions add their voices to the dialogue. Freedom cannot exist without everyone having a voice.

Yours in freedom,
Major Colson Maldris

Grand Lodge Letter:
Spoiler (click to reveal)

Loyal Pathfinder,

As Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch indicated, the original mission sent beneath Janderhoff was illconceived. For that we are both apologetic and embarrassed, but I am also suspicious as to whether any of the original team’s allegiances were directed toward another organization. In particular I am concerned about one Shu-Lin Foo, a Tian mystic whose record shows that she is curiously the lone survivor of several recent missions. This cannot be coincidence, and I would like to know what inquiries to make in case a larger plot is afoot. Please confirm for us to which faction she belonged.

Duty bound,
Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin

Silver Crusade Letter:
Spoiler (click to reveal)

Holy Servants,

I understand that there has been no word from the first Pathfinder team to explore Janderhoff’s depths. As much as I might pray that exciting discoveries are the source of their delay, I dread that they are, in fact, in need of immediate aid. As you prepare for your journey, pack what you need to administer healing to the wounded, and carry whatever you need to properly administer burial rites to the dead. Ensure that as many of the Pathfinders return alive and well. Ensure also that any who gave their lives in the pursuit of knowledge are honored and sanctified in the afterlife.

May the light shine upon your mission,
Ollysta Zadrian

---On Sky Citadels---

Dwarven history begins deep below the earth, where the first dwarves mined and smithed under the watchful eye of Torag, the Father of Creation. In the late centuries of the Age of Darkness, following the dictum of a series of ancient mandates handed down from a prophet of Torag, a relentless subterranean migration of dwarves called the Quest for Sky drove these people upward toward the surface.

After years of civil war, strife, and skirmishes with orcs, the great dwarven general Taargick united his people. Under Taargick’s leadership, the dwarves finally completed their push to the surface and established 10 glorious Sky Citadels atop the points of their emergence.

The Sky Citadels still stand today, some in ruins, some reclaimed by other races, and some still inhabited by their dwarven founders. The Sky Citadels represent the pinnacle of dwarven engineering and civilization, and as functional monuments of the Quest for Sky, these mighty structures drove roots deep into the familiar earth and thrust towers high into the newfound daylight. They were living corridors between earth and sky, light and dark, past and future, but as the spirit of their creators waned, so too did the Citadels. One by one they fell to voracious orcs, political strife, or the unstoppable forces of nature. Now half of these bastions of hope are overrun with savage denizens of the Darklands and buried beneath the centuries.

---On Janderhoff---

Although the greatest portion of the Sky Citadel Janderhoff’s construction occurred in the Age of Darkness, the resident dwarves have slowly expanded the underground city to accommodate the needs of a growing population.

When Oldrik Talhirk seized control of the Five Kings Mountains and mandated the worship of Droskar under a newly minted theocracy, many dwarves fled the nation and sought refuge in other Sky Citadels. In 4382 ar, groups of these refugees arrived in Varisia and drove the expansion of a short set of tunnels in Janderhoff; however, within a year a few of the Droskari faithful followed, and their contributions to the new construction so undermined the refugees’ work that several chambers collapsed.

The leadership of Janderhoff quickly decommissioned and sealed the compromised tunnels, and archivists quietly shelved records of the ill-fated project deep within their libraries. Only when these records resurfaced did the Mithral Mallet Mining Company bid to reopen and refurbish the damaged chambers.

Waiting quietly for the group to finish reading the letters, Rhonda gets up from her chair and joins the party's table.

Nodding in greeting, she gets down to business right away.

There's a few things I was asked to mention.

"First, of course, is I'm leading the team who will return any artifacts or information you have found back to the Society. The rest of the group is waiting with the wagon by the stables, so bring the items there.

"Second, about the trip. The journey to Janderhoff should be fairly quick--a few weeks at most. Take passage along the trade route down the Sellen river south and west to Lake Encarthan. Sail from there due west to the capital of Nirmathas, the city of Tamran. You then travel by the River Tourondel to reach the Dwarven waterworks of Skelt. Remarkable place, really, and worth stopping in at when you have more time.

"Anyway, once there you'll be able to follow a trade route directly to Korvosa, in Varisia. Resupply there, and the next stop will be Janderhoff, your destination. It lies northeast of Korvosa, at the southwest edge of the Mindspin mountains. There's trade routes there, so hopping in with a caravan should be trivial.

"Finally, one of my team, Thekk Stonewarden, is going with you. He's a dwarf who has studied a bit of lore, which should be helpful in this case, and may smooth the way a bit. Also, he's handy with a crossbow, so there's that, even if he does look like a hedgehog with all those bolts stashed on him."

Rhonda makes small-talk with the group before leaving, reminding them that she'll wait at the wagon with Thekk and the rest of her team.

"Don't take too long, I need to get those...supplies...down the Dagger Road today. Things are stirring up north, and the Crusader road is getting more active, so I'd like to be off as soon as possible."

Daggert greets Rhonda warmly and as usual has few questions but a lot of excitement. Sounds excellent Rhonda! Seems to me we've pretty much wrapped things up here, so it's time to move on. I've never seen the dwarven lands. You know anything about this... Sky Citadel? Janderhoff? Sounds like quite the place.

Rhonda scratches her chin while thinking...

"Well, it's a big Dwarven city built in a mountain. There's a lot of it, but the deeper one goes the older and less protected it gets. Lots of cave ins, squatters, that sort of thing. Never know what you'll find.

"The Pathfinders who went in before...a group of four, I believe. I do t knowing more than that, though. Not sure who was sent."

Eager for a change of scenery Daggert looks down at the letter again and smiles. It all sounds good to me! Those Pathfinders are as good as found. I'll go grab the horses and we can mount up whenever you're ready.

Turning to Flinder, Daggert whispers none too quietly. I think you're mistaken Flin. Rukha is the sister in law, and probably a dwarf to boot. This here is Rhonda and very much a halfling.

Célestin arrives last at the meeting, just in time before the mission order and the faction mission are given.

Then, at the mention of their new companion, he greets him:

"Welcome to the geng, Sir Stonewarden. You'll quickly see that being with us is both pleasant and dangerous!"

Then with a burst of laughter, he adds: "Let's celebrate this at the tavern after we do some shopping, what do you say all?"

With their goods transferred from the vaults of Thornkeep to the back of a wagon bound for Absalom, the gruop books passage south and west from Thornkeep, for the long river journey down to Lake Encartha, then up the Tourondel River, skiriting the northern edge of Soutehrn Fangwood in Nirmathas. After 12 days of travel, the group finds itself in Varisia at last, at the southeast corner of the country, near the Mindspin mountains, far to the east of Magnimar and the infamous Sandpoint.

Janderhoff is one of the few remaining dwarf-occupied Sky
Citadels and the only known one in Varisia. It is an important
trading post in the Mindspin Mountains, particularly between
the misunderstood Shoanti and the civilized peoples. Most
of Janderhoff exists inside the mountains, with several minnerates and other strucutres jutting from the mountaintops.

Veteran travelers all, the group finds itself rested and ready as they wind up a wide, paved trail to a very populated, modern, and active dwarven city bustling with trade caravans, soldiers scurrying from here to there. The bustle of daily living on the outskirts of a big city is apparent everywhere.

Passing into Janderhoff proper, the vaulted ceilings, towering spires, and bridges in all directions lend a feeling of vertigo more than cramped caves some picture dwarven dwellings resembling. With Thekk leading the way, and the address given by Venture-Captain Sheila
Heidmarch, the group has no trouble finding a rathern ornate building off a main street, where a small Pathfinder symbol is stitched into a Janderhoff banner hanging on the door in usual local style.

After a brief knock, the door swings open and a compentent, intelligent dwarven woman says

"Ah, you are the ones Sheila mentioned. Come in, eat and rest."

Rukha Borthwick laughs good naturedly, and leads the group to a large sitting area with an ornate granite table.

"Sit anywhere!" she says, while making several trips to the kitchen for more food and wine she sets out on the table.

"I do hope you can help. My brother-in-law Sandricaan Molnworret led the group, and he is a wizard of some talent. I know that he brought three others w ith him-a halfling, a human, and a half elf. Sandricaan mentioned that the Tian woman has a reputation as a jinx, having been the sole survivor of several previous missions. Sandricaan’s no saint either, especially after his stint with the Aspis Consortium. Still, family is family, and I would rather see my sister’s husband safely out of there. Rukha repies,

"The Mithral Mallet Mining Company is excavating old areas in search of treasure and untapped ore. When they hit on a sealed section of tunnels and many miners died, the Pathfinders agreed to look into it. In exchange for deactivating traps and making the area safe, the Mallet agreed to let the Pathfinders have information and some artifacts from the site."
