How faithful do we have to be to the original setting?

For example, if I write a Pathfinder story, can I do it in my homebrew campaign setting, or do I have to use Golarion?

Yohann, you might want to reduce the text size in the word table: the third column of numbers and words is line-broken (to me, anyway).

I figure that as long as it doesn't change the setting of the RPG entirely it should be safe.

Quote:
Participant may pick up only one RPG - without any restriction as long as it has an entry into our database - and write a tale that will make the reader discover this game, learn more about it, or consider it through a different perspective.

Re: RPGG Short Story Contest 2013: The Tavern's Tales - Legends of the Games
First of all, thank you very much for showing so much interest in this contest and even though it's going to prove quite difficult to answer each comment, I'll try to do my best with comments pertaining to the rules and any questions that may pop up.

Moreover, I'm really glad to see that some of you are enjoying the word table.

Besides, I was wondering whether I should put up a geeklist for each participant, including the title of their submission. I do not want to publish the stories before the deadline, it somehow kind of looks unfair in my opinion, but I will after that beside bundling all of them together in one file for judging them. What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea?

FNH1 wrote:
I may well have to enter this one myself, but which RPG?

Edge of Space maybe, or one of my own designs...

If there's any interest in converting all of the entries into an ePUB, give me a shout I can do that for you.

Thanks Felbrigg, I'm really happy to see RPG Geeks with a "designer" badge being motivated by this contest to write stories that wouldn't be fan-fictions but part of the games they designed or collaborated to.

As for the idea of converting the submissions into one epub file, I'm not giving up the idea, so we'll see this in due time and give you a shout out if my Calibre-fu proves too weak...

Jamesbv7 wrote:
I also really hope that we get to read all the stories because that would be really fun too.

Oh you will James, as I will make all of them public after the deadline.

Salut Caf', ça mousse? Ravi de te revoir par ici!

(Sorry guys, not too many French people round here on RPG Geek!)

Regarding your question, I think picking up a RPG system can be quite the interesting challenge especially if you manage to translate what's so peculiar about its mechanisms into a narrative.

downeymb wrote:

You don't need to, especially with such a game as Pathfinder which is, in my humble opinion, more than just 'high fantasy in Golarion'.
Feel free to depart from the setting as much as you like as long as you're giving us a feel of Pathfinder's true potential!

MichMedia wrote:

Well, I do not see anything wrong with the lines in the word table, Paul.
Anybody else is having any troubles with it? Should I reduce it?

Re: RPGG Short Story Contest 2013: The Tavern's Tales - Legends of the Games
This is purely dependent on my having time and a brainwave story wise...

I will be using the Legend Rulebook, which is sort of a cheat as it allows for any setting...so I shall use my own setting of "Ancient Stones" within which to write.

I will roll to see if it helps me, but may not use them (but will try to!)

1d100 = (54) = 54 54 : Stone
1d100 = (86) = 86 86 : Fallacy
1d100 = (41) = 41 41 : Alliance

Well, I don't think that could have worked out any better LOL....stone! nice.

Alright I have the basics of what I plan to do. So now I feel more comfortable trying to squeeze in the words. 3d100 = (9 + 90 + 9) = 108 There's no 108! cry
1d100 = (33) = 33
1d100 = (52) = 52
1d100 = (57) = 57

Natural, Impression, Criticism: Not bad given the story idea.

But where does Yohann fit in? We've always been able to compete in our own contests before. I competed in the Adventure Design Contest. It didn't effect anything so long as I wasn't tabulating the votes.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're running the contest and the site is providing the prize you're ineligible. There's a big difference between donated and real money prizes, in my eyes.
