Description Edit | History

from the introduction (user translation):
Epées & Sorcellerie is a role playing game inspired by the very first one published in 1974 by Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax. This is not a translation, far from it, but rather a french adaptation of a game that has never been published anywhere before in that language. The original rules are startlingly simple and vague to anyone familiar with the later versions. No truly canonical version exists, only a rereading often filtered down through the history of role-playing games, the memories of the oldest players, or their interpretations which are as numerous as they are judicious.

The 1974 rules were based on the tabletop miniatures wargame "Chainmail", the historical source of all role-playing. I returned to them several times in the course of design, to the point of renouncing the use of the 20-sided die, the famous d20, icon of gaming, in favour of 2d6, for which the system was originally designed. From the 2d6 design, in particular, came the special capabilities of the character classes and certain creatures, which differ from those of subsequent games in the same family.
