Description Edit | History

From the Back Cover:

You have traveled nine miles today, and still have 116 to go before you reach the other side of the ship. You are dead tired, your strength half gone, and just as you decide to rest, out from a rock steps the most deadly foe you've faced so far: a giant killer toadstool!!! You really don't need this, especially after the Nazgul and Cylon you just fought, but you have no choice in the matter: the toadstool is attacking!

PHASE VII is the unique game of SCIENCE FICTION and FANTASY. It is the most unusual game you will ever play. The setting is an alien space station controlled by a runaway computer. You have one goal in life: TO SURVIVE!

From the Game's Introduction:

This is the ultimate mixture of fantasy and science fiction, for in this game both magic and science work.... You are aboard a huge space station, the ORION. This is no small station, for it is 80 miles wide and 125 miles long.... A vial of a new bacteria was accidentally opened aboard the ship. A plague ran throughout, killing most of the population. As the Captain died, he fell and hit a dimensional warp lever which threw the ship not only into a time warp, but a magic warp as well. It turned the inhabitants of the station into fictitious characters throughout the centuries, and captured the ship in nether-space... The character's objective is to travel throughout the station without getting killed, at the same time amassing as many treasures as possible...

More Information Edit | History

This game received poor reviews in the various science-fiction/fantasy gaming magazines when it debuted. Most pointed out the incongruity of using gold pieces as a monetary unit: Where were the gold mines on a space station?

This setting cried out for some sort of puzzle or quest to find the missing ship parts or information needed to get the "Orion" out of nether-space and back to the real world, but the game consisted of fighting creatures from a bunch of different fiction genres and collecting loot, to no apparent purpose.

The "Orion" -- originally a space station built by aliens to human specifications -- was re-worked into a human-built spaceship for the game RingWielder by the same designer.

The original publication date of Phase VII (according to the rule booklet) was 1978. The designer later added a rules "Revision Sheet" (copyright 9/13/82) and a cut-out-and-assemble polyhedral die printed on card stock, also copyrighted 1982, which has led to confusion about when the game actually came out.
