Millions of years ago, Dragon visited Earth. While the Dragon Father resumed his interstellar travels, his children were tasked to harvest Mana (the magical energy that permeated the earth at the time) and protect their Mother.
But something went wrong, their Mother died and the Dragons, not knowing what to do, went to sleep. During their millions of years of slumber, Mana gradually disappeared, and the magical races (elves, centaurs, fey, ogres, demons...), unable to survive in a magic-deprived environment, joined the human race and forgot their mystical heritage. The only Mana left was found in small quantities in the products of human crafts.
The Hiroshima bombing in 1945 woke up the Dragon that slept nearby. Discovering a radically new world, he woke up the rest of his kind and the Game started, a contest for domination of earth and possession of the remaining Mana. They took human form, entered human society and had half draconic, half human offsprings, who in turn had children.
These second generation dragons are agents of one of the thirteen dragon families. They have the ability to form Gestalts, a form of empathic link with humans who are descendants of magical creatures. As the members of the Gestalt are exposed to Mana and the influence of the Dragon, their magical nature starts to reappear.
Scales is an initiation roleplaying game, where players gradually discover the magical nature of their character (secretly chosen by the gamemaster) while becoming more and more involved with their Gestalt and the plots and machinations of the Dragon families.
The game system is extremely simple. character creation takes five minutes (split 3 points between six stats, choose an occupation and two hobbies), action are resolved by rolling a d10 + bonuses/maluses over a set difficulty.
