Magic Frontiers is a science-fantasy RPG that merges space travel and high-tech with magic, weird species and other fantasy elements.
One of the concepts of Magic Frontiers is that thousands of species live on different worlds of the universe, and the players can design their own races. After determining the character attribute values randomly, the player selects his race that he can design or determine randomly. First a strain is selected from the six strains presented: humanoid, droid, insectoid, mineroid, plantoid, and ameboid. Then a species is determined as a sub-option of the strain. Mineroids for example have the crystal, metal, rock, or sediment species, humanoids can choose from avian, fish, mammal, and reptile. A strain also modifies a character's attributes. The last step of race creation is to add a certain number of traits like antlers, exoskeleton, quills, etc. The player can then name his race and describe it's exact appearance.
Every character has to select a profession that determines the level progression, the number of points for combat forms (close weapon combat, close unarmed combat, ranged firearms, etc.) and resists (resist cold, resist arcana, etc.) that a character receives each level. Some professions can only be used by certain strains. Power Professions allow the character to use one of three forms of magic. They give a character a certain amount of magic points and of spells per level. Technical professions receive disciplines that resemble basic skills in the lower level range like cartography or locks (picking, repairing, building), but get more powerful with higher levels. They allow a character to create weapons, vehicles, buildings, and other technical devices. Lastly, robotic professions select from a range of parts and programs.
Combat makes use of a combat table to determine what d20 result is needed to hit an opponent. It cross-references the attackers combat ability and modifiers with his opponent's defensive abilities. Damage is subtracted from a characters stamina points that increase with a character's level.
