From the Basics of the System:
The goal of Homeless is to be a loose system where Role-play trumps rule lawyering. If you need things spelled out for you or you have a tendency to argue minutia then Homeless is not where you want to be, though it may be how you got there!
The Homeless system is intended to be basic; mere guidelines for your scenarios. At its base is the d10. Ten sided dice will be used in character creation and for all skill checks you make during your encounters. Your character will consist of six attributes and a variety of skills, all of which will be affected by your character class.
Living in the Modern World there are no levels, level requirements, or level limits. You've gotta live your life the best you can! Therefore there is no levelling in Homeless. Your progress is tracked by how well you accomplish your goals. Goals are based on character class and are intended to be flexible. Setting them and accomplishing them is heavily dependent on you and your GM. Some goals may be daily while others more elaborate.
Character improvement in Homeless is much as it is for you in life. As you achieve your goals your skills improve at the things you do. Likewise, your body and mind benefit or suffer depending on your actions. Most importantly your experiences develop into memories. Memories can't be tracked on a character sheet. They don't level up and grant you new abilities. Rather they enrich or haunt your life, allowing you to possibly make better choices in the future or condemn you to life of mistakes repeated.
Memories are what I hope you will take away from playing Homeless. Memories of times spent with friends engaging in your favourite past time, playing games. I'd also like you to take away an appreciation for the difficulty many of those around us face through the trials of addiction, economic downturns, hard luck and hard lives. Sometimes it may only take a nudge to push us into the shadows.
