Description Edit | History

From publisher blurb:

Codename: Spandex is a retro-clone game that emulates the game mechanics of an out-of-print game without using any of the copyrighted artistic presentation. For legal reasons, the name of the game being emulated is not mentioned anywhere within this site or within Codename: Spandex itself. However, this doesn't matter. If you know the game then you will pretty much instantly recognise it, and if you don't know the game then it doesn't matter - you can play Codename: Spandex on its own merits.

Codename: Spandex concentrates on handling one power level of super heroes well, rather than trying to cover all types of hero from the lowest powered street-hero to the most powerful cosmic entity. This power level is approximately that of the classic X-Men (without such powerhouses as Phoenix, Magneto and Professor X)

Designer's comments from a post on Dragonsfoot.org:

Codename: Spandex emulates the much loved mechanics of Golden Heroes without re-using the copyrighted artistic presentation of those rules found in the original game.

Features include:

  • It retains the (often labelled as "addictive") character generation of the game it is based on, where you are given a random set of powers and you must rationalise how you got them or lose them.
  • Reaction based combat that follows the to-and-fro of comic book fights.
  • Detailed personality and character advancement rules that remain innovative even today.
  • The game is FREE, in fact I've put the whole text into the Public Domain.
  • Instead of trying to cover everything from street-level to cosmic level characters, Codename: Spandex concentrates of doing one power level well; so you don't get issues with Angel Summoner and BMX Bandit in the same group.
