I think we should get to know each other a bit. Building community takes time and a little effort, so this is my little bit of effort to reach out to folks.

Answer the following questions as vaguely or specifically as you wish. I don't want to pressure folk, so skip any question you find too awkward. I just want us to get to know each other a bit. And yes, I'll start.

First, pick an RPG or "RPG Item" to use as your geeklist entry. (If you've never done this before, look for "Add Item" under this header.) Choose a game for whatever reason - doesn't matter to me. Give an explanation of why you chose the game - again, as vague or as specific as you wish. Love it, hate it, curious about it, can't get it out of your mind, etc.

Then answer as many of the following questions as you wish:

1. Where do you live?

2. Is there something about your username and your Avatar you want us to know?

3. How involved are you on the other Geekdo sites (BGG, VGG)?

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

6. What are some of your favorite things about role-playing?

7. Do you prefer games with a GM or GM-less? Any idea why that's so?

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

[10. Add your own question!]

When you're done, you can then get free microbadges at Are You on The List? (Free Microbadge... Or Two)!

I chose this edition of Dungeons and Dragons because I genuinely like and enjoy it, and I feel it has become something of an underdog. It's not without its problems, but I feel it does a lot of things really well, and I'm hoping to eventually assemble a complete collection for it. The way things currently look, at least I'll be able to do so inexpensively!

1. Where do you live?

The scenic wonderland of Central Illinois!

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

There's really not much of a story, there. I didn't want to recycle any old user names and I wasn't feeling very creative. 1970 is the year of my birth. I figured if America's Founding Fathers had the Spirit of '76 and the Hersham Boys had the Spirit of '69, I could have the Spirit of '70!

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

I was somewhat involved in the 'Feel the Love' thread in its first age, but drifted away from it, later. Beyond that I was primarily a lurker, making my presence known only through the very occasional comment, geeklist item, participation in a PBF, or other contribution.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

For 34 years now, and I have no plans on stopping any time soon!

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

There's never really been a total hiatus. There was a six year period during my first marriage where it was confined largely to computer RPG's, but I've always played them in one form or another.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

Getting to explore worlds I will never be able to visit in the flesh and do things I will never be able to do in real life.

I also love the stories that emerge out of role-playing, even though the vast majority of them are only meaningful to the people that were involved in the session in which they happened.

Finally, the friendships that I've gained and the people I've met. This last is probably my most favorite of all. I'm not in touch with everyone I've ever gamed with, but I'm always glad of the time we spent together doing something we all loved.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

I prefer the hyphen.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Roughly twenty. Of those, there are only 10% that I have no desire to play again at all.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

Look for me to run a PBF in late 2013 or early 2014, once I've finally finished school and life settles a bit.

Just discovered this geeklist; what a great idea! Reading through, it's been great to get more of an insight into my fellow geeks

1. Where do you live?

I live in Christchurch, in New Zealand. Christchurch is a large city by NZ standards (about 350k people, second largest city in NZ), but pretty tiny on a world scale!

Just over two years ago, on September 4th 2010, Christchurch was hit by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake, and amid the many thousands of aftershocks, an even more devastating and fatal earthquake on February 22nd 2011. The city has been heavily damaged, to the point of being unrecognisable in places. But it's my home and it's where I'm staying

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

Iuchiban is the big bad guy from Legend of the Five Rings. I've been using him as my username on a bunch of sites for many years now.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

I visit BGG regularly for reviews and information about games, and to log my plays. But I never got involved in the community over there. I've been on RPGG pretty much since I found BGG, but after de-lurking earlier this year, I've found the community here to be incredibly welcoming!

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Played my first game in around '83 or '84, so nearly 30 years now!

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

Pretty steadily; biggest gap was probably 3 years while at university, where I was heavily into CCGs.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

I love the opportunity to get out of my own head, and think about and react to the world from an entirely different perspective. Plus it's fun!

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Oddly enough, despite being pretty uptight about correct spelling, this is one that doesn't really worry me, though I'll tend to use "roleplaying".

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Let me see. after a quick count, I got to about 40, though there's bound to be some I'm forgetting. I can't think of any I wouldn't play again; every system has the potential to be fun with a good GM.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I love dogs, and am a strong proponent of animal welfare. People, please spay or neuter your pets, adopt animals from your local shelters, and help put back-yard breeders and puppy-mills out of business.

Hi!

I'll enter my favorite RPG of all times: WFRPv2 meeple
And now to the questions:

1. Where do you live?
Vienna, Austria. A small little town near the center of Europe. I live in a rowhouse in the outskirts with my family.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
PzVIE means Panzerkampfwagen VI E, more commonly known by the Allies as "Tigertank". When I created my Geekuser, I played a lot Advanced Squad Leader and I always liked that particular tank.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
I was a lurker on BGG since 2005, mostly checking for rules questions and useable files. I stopped lurking in 2010 for BGG and became quite active there; in 2011 I started to participate with RPG-Geek. Dave even gifted me with a microbadge: Microbadge: Member of the RPG Geek Community Since 2011

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Since the age of 16. Oh boy, that is more than 30 years ago wow

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
Sometimes I played 3 systems at the same time, sometimes I never played a single game for a year.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?
The experience that you are in a story, that you can be any character you like, from a hero to outlaw. That you can bend and twist that story, modify it to your liking.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
I'm a native German speaker, I'm happy that I can write "role playing" at all. But if you force me to choose, I go for "role playing". meeple

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
About 20 or so. Probably 5 of them are worth playing again (and to answer correctly: 25%).

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
Well, I was GotW during the great Outtage of 2012, so you can learn a lot about me in this thread: RPG Geek of the Week #116: Ron (PzVIE)

I selected Dark Heresy because I love 40K, I love Call of Cthulhu and this game seems to combine both words.

1. Where do you live?
Anzegem, Belgium. Anzegem is a very small (certainly in population) agricultural town in West-Vlaanderen. We probably have more cows than people living here. The town mainly consists of two main streets and one church. Yet despite being this small and remote, there is still a lot to do here, and a big part of the population is young (unlike most of these kind of towns in Belgium)

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
Not really. It is a long story and has something to do with Belgian beer (Kwak).

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

I was pretty active. Now, I rarely go there anymore. One reason is my declining interest in traditional boardgames. The other reason is the community there.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Not counting my long break, I've been playing RPGs for 6 years.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

There was a hiatus of close to 10 years. My girfriend and I moved out of the big city we lived in (Gent) and started with a family. I lost touch with the community as the shop in Gent closed. Got back to RPGs due to RPGgeek and found a new community in Gent.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing? (* - see first list comment, below!)

Having fun with friends and joking around. It helps me relax and forget about stuff in the "real world" for a few hours. Sounds heavy when saying it like this. It just helps me recharge my batteries to go at it.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Roleplaying. But spell checkers hate it.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

I think 15. I still play 4 - 5 different systems. Some of those 15 I will not play again, but I'd play most of them.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
No.

What a great idea for a geeklist. I had not notice this list until I read about it in Nick's RPGGotW -thread. And now Dave's post. This thread got mentioned twice in two days, talk about signs

I chose Mouse Guard as I've had the time of my life playing PbF game of this. *Waves to other's in our group*

1. Where do you live?

I live in Finland, Helsinki.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

As most of you probably know by now, we speak two launguages in Finland, Finnish and Swedish. When my mom bought her first cat, the breeder of the cat was Swedish-speaking. They were trying to lure the kitten from under the bed and they used a kattvippa:

From gallery of Kattvippa

I loved how the word sounds and I adopted the word as my username. Not sure if that is commonly used word though or if it has the same meaning in Sweden.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

I mostly hang around the Women's Forum there, but did browse through other places, lurking. I have to admit that after venturing to this side of the fence, I haven't spent that much time at BGG. I'm only hanging around the Women's Forum when something pops up in mys subscriptions

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Since Mountains of Madness, so I began at 5th January 2012

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

Very steadily. I have two f2f groups and I play a lot Play by VoIP games.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?

Telling a story with awesome people, getting in your character and thinking like she/he does, getting to "do" things I wouldn't dare doing in real life, being a part of something amazing, like being in a film and writing the screenplay together as we go along, but so much better! And all the laughs!

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Roleplaying or role playing.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

So far I've played 104 different roleplaying games. Some of them are powered by the same system, like Apocalypse World and its hacks. I have not counted the actual systems. I have all the played RPGs listed in this geeklist: Down the Rabbit Hole (Kattvippa's played RPGs). I think only two or three of them are something I wouldn't necessarily want to play again. And I could consider giving them the second chance.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I love cats, tea (green, white and herbal), tattoos, music, reading, nature, painting miniatures, my family and friends, roleplaying games, board games and above all life. And all of those great people I've learned to know here at RPGG

WFRP 3rd edition, chosen because it's currently my favourite system of the moment, the tactile components really get out of the way in this game in a way that thoroughly surprised me. The fact that so much data is ready to hand and we never need to look things up during play - just glance at the tokens/symbols in play and press on.

1. Where do you live?

I've just moved from East Essex to North London, near Enfield, UK

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

I wish I could change it! I set this account up many years ago with a name I used at the time and have since retired from every website I use regularly...except this one since BGG has no way to change it

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

I consider myself a heavy user but a poor community member on both sites! I spend a lot of time browsing entries and reading other peoples posts and contributions, but tend to stay fairly silent myself

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Hmm, probably close to 20 years, since I was 12

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

They've definitely come and gone throughout my life, mostly due to moving schools and losing touch with people. Although I've often come back to those friend groups later in life and we've picked up with new systems! Most of the people I RP with now are guys I've known for over 10 years.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing? (* - see first list comment, below!)

The creativity, mostly from other people! I like throwing out things to the table and seeing what comes back, even people I know quite well sometimes surprise me with their ideas.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

RPGs - I'm very lazy

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Hmm, probably close on 20 systems? It feels like a lot but if I sit down and count through them it really isn't. I definitely tend to prefer 'the long campaign' so I'll often stick with one system for a few years until we've played it to death. I'll play MOST things again, I rarely find a system so painful I won't use it. I do find that more with genre though, generic 'LOTR-esque' fantasy bores me (Yes, I know I listed Warhammer as my favourite - that is the fantasy exception!)

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

For 10 years I owned a shotgun and explosives license (that's probably not a big thing to Americans but in England that tends to get raised eyebrows).
I work for Mickey Mouse.

Nice to meet you all

In 1981 my Dad bought me the Dungeons & Dragons basic set for Christmas. We bought (really awful) D&D miniatures from our local Leisure World, painted them up, and my Dad ran me, my brother and my Mom through a game and I loved it!

1. Where do you live?
I live in Burlington Ontario, in Canada.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
Only that, fairly obviously, I'm a big fan of Cthulhu. goo

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
I have been a lurker on BGG since pretty much the first day it went live, but I only really joined the community in 2010. At that time I jumped in to BGG, RPGG and VGG with both feet.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
As I mentioned above I've been playing since 1981.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
I've always been steady with my role-playing -- Through clubs, school, work and friends-of-friends I can say that most of the really important people in my life have sat down for a role-playing game with me at one point or another.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing? (* - see first list comment, below!)
I love using miniatures for my games, and I use each game as an excuse to paint up more figures from my collection.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
Role-playing. Definitely role-playing.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
I've played about 25 different systems. Of that there are only a couple that I disliked. I'm generally up for any game that's going.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
I am an active member of the Feel The Love community here on the Geek, and I encourage everyone to come and hang out and share the good vibes.

Ah, Mini Six - it hits all my current desires from a game, just about: concise, easy to grok, no HP/levels, and free.

1. Where do you live?
In Scotia, NY, a little to the NW of Albany.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
The "Dubya" is the first letter of my last name - very original, I know.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
I lurked a fair amount and then posted a review or two.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Hmmm, that's a good question. My first real exposure was sophomore year of HS ('89-90) with TMNT, but other than HS it's been pretty hit or miss that I've actually been able to play on a regular basis. I'm guessing that out of the last 20 years or so, I've actually routinely played for...lessee...maybe 5 of those.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
Big, big, BIG hiatuses. After HS, things got pretty sporadic as the guys I used to play with all went their separate ways to college, and then once I joined the Navy there was another pretty big chunk lost there. Oh, and then the kids showed up, monstrous drains on free time that they are...
To be honest, unless I get off my duff and decided to do some PbP I suspect I may never really RP again to any extent...and to some extent, I've become okay with that.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?
Spending time with folks that have similar tastes in entertainment.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
I vacillate between one word with and without hyphen, but I don't just leave it as two separate words.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
Not that many. The many incarnations of the Palladium system all sort of count as the same thing with minor differences, there's two versions of D&D (2E & 3.5), a little Savage Worlds and WEG Star Wars.
Of those, I would play in all but perhaps the Palladium ruleset, but for the D&D as written I would probably do a lot of whining as to how aspects of it really bug the hell out of me now.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
The blurb on my userpage brings things up to speed pretty nicely.

1. Where do you live?
California all of my life except two years in China.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
Not really. My son's name is Wyatt. Long ago I picked the name "wyatt's_sire" to play cribbage online. I played Halo and that didn't fit so it shortened to 'wysire'. It's unique, I never have to fight somebody for the username.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
Very. First for informing game purchases but then the community. FTL, chit chat, etc.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Wannabe my whole life. The Star Trek game was my first purchase in the 80's. Didn't seriously play til 2012.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing? (* - see first list comment, below!)
Shared experience of storytelling, the surprises of other's creativity, exercising my own creativity, the chaos dice interject into the story and of course...LEVELING UP!

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
"roleplaying" but I'm not dogmatic about it.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
5. All of them.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
I am mourning my absence from heavy BGG/RPGG 'forum-ing' and PbFing.

I chose the 2nd Edition AD&D Players handbook because while I played 1st edition some, I didn't heavily start playing with a group until 2nd Edition AD&D.

1. Where do you live?
The bleak and dreary plains of Central Illinois.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
I've used "Renwmn" (or a variation) as a nickname for many years. It is short for "Renaissance Woman". It is mostly aspirational and partially reflective of my interests and aptitudes in a multitude of different arts, sciences, and pursuits. In actuality, a more fitting term would be "Jacqueline of all Trades". "Renwmn" also represents my interest in the legends and myths that thrived in Medieval and Renaissance times and the creativity and whimsy of Renaissance Faires.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
I've been a far more active lurker on the Geek in general than I have been a contributor. Having recovered from a couple of challenging incidents at BGG, I've become more active at BGG, RPGG, and VGG in the past year. I've a great interest in RPGs, board games and video games.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
I've been playing RPGs for over 25 years. I first started with 1st edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, but my interest really blossomed with second edition AD&D. (I still catch myself wanting to use the term "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons". )

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
After high school and college it was difficult to find ready groups to play tabletop RPGs with especially in some areas of the Midwest I was living. As I've gotten older there have been the struggles of finding a group, being available when others were, and consistency of the group at large attending scheduled meeting times. On top of that there are always the issues that can arise from different personalities and playing styles. I haven't been with a consistent group as much as I would have liked over the years but I've still managed to keep my interest alive. In many ways, roleplaying enforced MUDs, RPG video games, and "Ameritrash" board games have at times become substitutes for an RPG tabletop experience.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?
I absolutely adore the creative experiences of character development and cooperative story telling. I love the challenge of creating, developing, and portraying the role of a believable, complex character within the context of a particular game world. Even though I consider myself a "roleplayer" vs. "roll player", I still really do enjoy the battle strategy and problem solving aspects of many tabletop RPGs.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

I typically spell it "roleplaying", but I don't mind if other people use different variations. I'm disappointed more when people ignore the act of roleplaying in games that are meant to facilitate it.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

I've played every edition of Dungeons and Dragons so far, but only several other different systems. I'd play some of the other systems again, but I have a strong preference for D&D and/or Pathfinder. Part of this stems from me feeling like I've never gotten enough of playing D&D. I enjoy variety in many aspects of my life, but this is one area where I keep going back to the familiar.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
Another great interest and passion of mine is import and microbrew craft beers. While I've never been a gamemaster, I spent several years as an Admin and developer on a roleplaying enforced MUD. (Thinking back this really monopolized my gaming time for far too long.)

I selected Hero as that is the system that really opened my eyes. It is also the first system that I played that allowed me to build whatever I wanted.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
Um...nope...my real name.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
VERY little. I came to RPGGeek as a way to track my large collection. I am staying because of the GREAT threads, reviews, etc.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Long time...singe 1978. Started with the light blue D&D and moved to Champions.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
Pretty steadily. The only gaps are during the births of my two sons for around 6 months.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing? (* - see first list comment, below!)
Love to be able to escape from my normal world why telling fantastic stores with my friends. Ok two things...I cheated.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
Role-playing. The rest are wrong...wrong I tell you!

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
Wow...lots...at least 25 or 30 different systems. I would play any of them again depending on the GM.

RPG Item: Welcome to Mortiston, USA
I chose Welcome to Mortiston for a few reasons. It was the first project I ever backed on Kickstarter; it was created by our very own Mark Cookman; and it is something I am really looking forward to getting to the table.

1. Where do you live?
In sunny and warm North Yorkshire, England.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
I've used it for close to 10 years -- first as a unique name for my (long since defunct) blog.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
Quite a bit. BGG was my intro to the *GG community, and I still hang out there a bit. I spend a lot more time on RPGG now, though.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Roughly? 25 years. Thanks, I feel old now.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
Only one really significant hiatus, but it has been a long time since I've had a regular RPG group, so I mostly play really short campaigns or one-offs.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing? (* - see first list comment, below!)
The creativity and imagination of several different people dynamically working together (or against each other). And the dice are awesome.
(Yes, the first time I read this I interpreted it as "least favourite thing about role-playing".)

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
Depends on which is grammatically correct given the context. Yeah, I'm one of those people.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
I'd say I've played at least 15 different systems. I'd play any of them again, especially if the group of players is fun.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
I'm around RPGG a lot, but I mostly lurk.

I chose Bunnies & Burrows because it's one of my favorite lesser-known RPGs. I have many happy memories of playing this at ConnCon with my high school buddies in the early 1990s, and of our GM, whose business card read "Storyteller." (I've carried that card in my wallet for 20 years now, both because of the memories and because I think it's a fantastic thing to aspire to; I'd love to be a full-time novelist someday.)

d10-1 Where do you live?

I live in sunny Utah; I moved here in 2004.

d10-2 Is there something about your username you want us to know?

It's incredibly unoriginal! I switched over to using my real name online about a decade ago, and have never looked back.

d10-3 How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Quietly quite involved, I guess? I joined in 2008 and have always used the collection management side of the site extensively. I thumb like crazy, and I've submitted a ton of images, but I'm not a prolific poster.

d10-4 Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

I started gaming in 1987, although I didn't really know how it was supposed to work until a friend gave me a proper introduction in 1989. My introduction to gaming was Lords of Creation; my proper introduction was Dungeons & Dragons Set 1: Basic Rules, and the first game I ran was Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (2nd Edition).

d10-5 Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

I got pretty fed up with AD&D in the late 1990s, which spilled over into my enjoyment of the hobby as a whole, and didn't do much (any? I can't really remember) gaming for a couple of years. I don't ever really want to take another hiatus.

d10-6 What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing? (* - see first list comment, below!)

Gaming has been a hugely positive influence in my life. I've made lifelong friends, learned to commit to projects and pursue things I might not feel ready to pursue, and done things -- freelancing writing, blogging, publishing -- I might not have done without gaming.

d10-7 Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Roleplaying. I don't much mind when people write it out other ways, though.

d10-8 Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

I've played 69 RPGs as of this writing; of those, I'd be reluctant to play 14 again, so about 20%. My tastes have changed before, though -- you never know!

d10-9 Anything else you want us to know about you?

I do all sorts of things you should read and/or buy! I run Engine Publishing, run and write for the GMing blog Gnome Stew, write a personal (mostly gaming) blog, Yore, and just designed my first RPG for the 2012 RPG Geek 24-Hour RPG Contest.

Nobilis (2nd edition) is my favorite edition of one of my favorite games. The setting and game are great, the book itself is beautiful, and it's a solid diceless system.

1. Where do you live?
Nashville, TN. Specifically, East Nashville. I really like it here.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
It's Malkav backwards.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
Marginally. I posted on the Dominion forums a bit and I poked around the ones for the various Wings of War games. I recorded most of my plays but I mostly lurked.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Since 1982.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
There's never been a hiatus. I'm lucky to have always been around other roleplayers. I even married one.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?
I love pretending to be in fantastic settings. I also love creating those settings and seeing what players do with them.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
"Roleplaying" which is the one spelling my spell checker doesn't accept.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
A few dozen. I can only think of two of those that I wouldn't play again. Any other bad experiences have been due to the other people involved.

119. RPG Item: Drakar och Demoner (2nd Edition) [Average Rating:7.10 Overall Rank:3631]
RPG Item: Drakar och Demoner (2nd Edition)
For my entry I picked the second edition of Swedish mainstay Drakar och Demoner, the first RPG I bought.

1. Where do you live?
Uppsala, Sweden.
2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
If all religions were like Discordianism we'd have a lot less trouble in the world.
3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
I use it to keep track of what games I own and play and to see what's in the pipeline, and sometimes take part in discussions. I've only very rarely used the general message boards.
4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Since before I knew what they were, say 30 years, give or take a couple. Me and one of my childhood friends used to make up our own games based on movies and comics, and some of them were kinda-sorta like roleplaying games.
5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
I've had shorter and longer breaks. The longest was for several years after I moved to go to university - it took me a while to hook up with a steady playgroup.
6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing? (* - see first list comment, below!)
Everything, really. I enjoy reading them, writing them, playing them, thinking about them... On an intellectual level I like how they let you express ideas about the world (or a world) in a way that lets others explore them actively.
7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
"Rollspel" - the Swedish way. In English I typically use "roleplaying".
8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
At a guess... 30 maybe? 40? It depends on how you count, too - sometimes a new edition of a game is so different as to be a new game. I think I'd play most of them again under the right circumstances. Now, those circumstances might be very specific...

There's at least a handfull I want to play right now.

1. Where do you live?
The Midwestern United States: Indiana.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
I like mathematics more so than is probably healthy, and want to be a Ph.D. in it or something related to it one day. However, liking it does not necessarily mean I am any good at it.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
Barely. I saw that BGG had other branches to the site and thought I would browse around.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Since I was 12 years old, I got my start with 1st edition AD&D being the DM for one other guy my age. Once he became hooked, we traded the DM mantle back and forth for each other, making up ridiculous adventures, trying as many settings as we could get our hands on and/or read about. I have definitely come a long way from then, but I still DM and, still primarily, D&D.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
There was a hiatus in there a little after I started college. I had been a DM for my gaming group for nine years and had burnt out on it. I wrote all of my adventures myself, and as I was starting college, it just became too much work to do. I had to take a break, at least from DMing. A few later (after college) I came back as a player.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing? (* - see first list comment, below!)
I love stories, and I love creating a good story for my friends to be a part of. It took me many years to figure out what that means, but I think I have become better at it overall. It is one of the reasons I kept DMing and did not play as much. I like playing, but I like being behind the screen. Some might see that as a control thing, but I like assisting the storytelling and plot motion more than being one of the main characters.

Also, with RPGs, one gets to tell some fantastic tales. You get to be the hero; you get to foil the criminal mastermind; you get to become the wizard with "phenomenal cosmic power", the daring thief, the brutal warrior, or even the criminal mastermind. You get to play a role, and it is only for the entertainment of yourself and your friends (typically). Hopefully, in all of the play, you create something memorable for everyone.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
I prefer "roleplaying", but I am okay with "role-playing". Since it is a compound adjective describing games, the "role playing" is absolutely no good.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
Hmmm.... Good question. I have played AD&D 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3.5 editions; Shadowrun 2nd edition; RIFTS; Spycraft 1st edition; a couple d20 reskinnings; Star Wars d6 edition; Vampire: the Masquerade; Mage: the Ascension; Vampire LARP; Warhammer Fantasy RPG 2nd edition; and Rogue Trader. (The latter two being as close as one can get without actually sitting down with a group.) Of those, I would play any AD&D edition, Spycraft, WHFRPG, or Rogue Trader again. And I would only play RIFTS if certain folks were running the game. The rest I would have to be convinced at gunpoint; life is too short, and I have several systems I want to try, like Pathfinder, Birthright AD&D 2nd or 3rd edition (some day!!!), Mouse Guard/Burning Wheel, True20, Dark Heresy, Shadowrun 4th edition, etc.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
I like gaming. RPGs are what got me into gaming more than, say, board, card, or video games (though I like all of them). As everyone else I know seems to get married, have children, grow old, and so on, I find that "gaming" takes a very broad scope as time gets more limited. Rare are the days of the six-hour RPG-a-thon and are replaced by an hour of board games, card games, or something else. Sometimes RPGs. But, damn it, I still like them. I have yet to find that Holy Grail RPG which balances dice rolls, bookkeeping, storytelling, and interaction in a nice package while keeping a satisfactory play experience in, say, a short 2-hour session. But then again, maybe I just like to talk and play too much to make a 2-hour session actually work (being a DM, I do have to take some responsibility for that!).

I never played an RPG in my life until last December. Last fall a classmate who sat next to me was always surfing an interesting website, looking up things that really caught my eye. So, during class, did I mention he had a laptop? Anyways, I asked him, "what are you looking at? It looks really cool." By this time in my life I was starting to migrate away from video games and more toward boardgames and I had also started scoping out RPG's. I have a fascination with worlds and universes created by other people. So when he told me he was creating a character for an RPG called Shadowrun, I had nooo idea what he was doing but the premise sounded awesome. (I'm a HUGE fan of Ghost in the Shell so Shadowrun just sounded way too cool!) And so before you know it he gave me the PDF versions of every Shadowrun book he owned. Come December my first ever RPG character was made. A 10ft tall troll named Patience. An ex-ganger trying to make it into the big leagues. Needless to say my first campaign was a hilarious comedy of errors that saw a very quick escalation of failures happen to my guy that culminated in a horribly botched fake assassination attempt where I shot a teammate. The ensuing chase ended when my brains were scattered across the pavement. Meanwhile the rest of the team got ko'd breaking into some corporation's building to steal some info.

Since then my experiences with RPG's have been a hoot. Rogue Trader saw the first and only good session (it ended early due to RL problems with the GM soblue) where things went horribly bad in the beginning but pulled an epic turnaround at the end of it. My last system I played lasted over half a year. It was Exxalted. Best moment was when I used a patron at a bar as a weapon during a fight with an abyssal one. Good times cool And yet, however entertaining those were, I have always wanted to go back and give Shadowrun another try. My group lol's at Shadowrun being my intro to RPG's all the time but I'm more than willing to bear with the learning curve because the setting is probably one of my favorites.

1. Where do you live?
San Fransisco Bay Area, California, USA

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
I discovered Aniketos while looking up a name for my first WoW character. It means unconquerable in Greek afaik.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
I was a generally using both since I first registered here. However I've spent most of my time there mostly searching through the Wargames and Print and Play sections.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
Since December of 2011 (or last year).

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
Steadily until August. The Exxalted campaign I had been playing since about February ended when school started up. I'm a grad student so life abruptly ended. We plan on picking up again come winter break so I'm

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing?I love being able to create various characters and taking part in stories, being apart of the development process of many memorable moments and characters (namely NPCs). I also like being able to explore the worlds and universes others have created and then breaking it down by discussing various aspects of them during games.

It's also great to share your various adventures with others who may not have been apart of your group. Hearing about different stories and characters makes the setting feel more alive.

So much fun!

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
Roleplaying

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?
Shadowrun, Rogue Trader, and Exxalted. As of right now, I've read Mouse Guard, created several characters, and have designs for a mission but haven't had time to get a session going outside of character creation.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
Hopefully during this winter I'll be putting the finishing touches on my Mouse Guard campaign and posting it hear and definitely on the Mouse Guard forums. I also have some of Mogoose Publishing's Conan 2nd Ed. RPG. I'm hoping one day I'll be able to GM and game in this setting. Having read all of the Conan stories I was too excited to find these in a local store. Same thing about the Dresden Files RPG.

1. Where do you live?

Just outside of Boston, Mass

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?

Nyr-IV is the homeworld of the King's Guard Imperial Guard from my epic 40K days. It is also a perturbation of my last name.

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?

Very active. You don't get Microbadge: Level 14 BGG poster by not being active, though most of that is the fault of the Werewolf PBF. (That's the game where the werewolves are evil village people eaters, not vampire hating ecowarriors...)

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?

Since the original Red Box D&D set. "You guys make up characters, I'll color in the dice with a crayon..."

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?

Pretty steadily. I've followed the games through school and college, and now use it mainly to keep in touch with old college friends.

6. What's at least one of your favorite things about role-playing? (* - see first list comment, below!)

You get to see how you and other create a dynamic ...essence?... with minimal limitations and a very here and now presence. It's something that only the people involved can really appreciate. Boardgames and videogames may create social groups and events, but they rarely have same depth of involvement or ownership as an RPG. You really do get out what you've put into it, and many of the new games are making the cost of entry so much lower. It also is a great way to open your eyes to different ways of dealing with the same problem.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?

Roleplaying. One word, one concept separate from the psychological version. Concatenating the phrase into a single word signifies how conjoined the two separate aspects are of not only developing a unique, new psyche but also the critical act of embodying that psyche and experiencing growth and change through it. Mere role playing is a parlor trick into seeing the world through another already existent person's eyes and in such, altering your own behavior. Clearly the creation and culmination of an entire new existence is a far more powerful and enlightening form of self exploration. This is why all psychologists are quacks. The few who hyphenate the term are clearly outwardly trying to emphasize to the world that they are using the best of both worlds -- and immediate tip off to the fact that they cannot accurately assess how manifestly greater roleplaying is over role playing. They are hirsute poseurs, grasping at ontological concepts they have no hope of comprehending, and regurgitating neologisms and are the ludologistic equivalent of a management sycophant seeking to "Drill down" from their "10,000 foot view" with an attention to microscopic detail encompassing the entire holistic living organism.

Huh, what? This isn't 101 Pschological Dramatics Final? Oh, nevermind then.

8. Roughly how many different systems have you played? What percentage of those would you play again?

Everything from the D&D and its incarnations up through 3.x, a good chunk of WoD, various SciFi systems (Traveller, TORG, Star Frontiers, Star Wars, Eclipse Phase, etc), along the L5R tangent, and into the modern stuff (Fiasco, Microscope, etc...) with a thread of Call of Cthulhu usually holding it all together in some eldritch way.

I'm currently playing in Pendragon and Call of Cthulhu: Gaslight face to face, and Eclipse Phase here, as well as a stalled out Fiasco (really, a fiasco of a Fiasco!). Clearly it's percentile systems for the win right now!

Most systems have their strengths and weaknesses, and I appreciate most of them, but I generally enjoy a game for the awesome system, or the amazing setting. All too rarely do the two go together in a system that has legs, which is why I'm in the cult of the new rpg. However, the one thing a game needs above all are awesome players. A good group of players can bring a terrible system to heel, and accentuate the strengths of the great games. That said, I'd play most games again, usually using past experience direct the game to the rpg's strengths.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?

I actually hang out in the RPG Chatroom fairly frequently. It's a very Zen place.

1. Where do you live?
I live in Bolzano, Italy: it is the chief town of the Upper Adige province, in Northern Italy, at the border with Austria. Italian and German are equally spoken here, so I also speak German, although my mother tongue is Italian.

2. Is there something about your username you want us to know?
I think its source is quite obvious: I love the Lord of the Rings - I’ve loved it for almost thirty years now - and Tom Bombadil is my favourite character.

«Bombadillo» comes straight from the song he sings when he meets the hobbits first: «Hey dol! Merry dol! Ring a dong dillo! Ring a dong! Hop along! Fal lal the willow! Tom Bom, jolly Tom, Tom Bombadillo!» (I confess I had to search for all the words, I had forgotten most of them since my last reading, so many years ago).

3. How involved, if at all, were you on BGG (BoardGameGeek) before coming to RPG Geekdo?
I had just discovered BGG in September 2011: I started being an RPGG user (mainly a lurker) in the first months of 2012.

4. Roughly how long have you played RPGs?
By adding two different periods, I’ve been playing RPGs for some seven years.

I’ve been playing RPGs in the first half of the 90s, as I was in the highschool: at that time it was AD&D and the Forgotten Realms only.

Then, because of the kind of the university studies I chose, the work I kept having (I began being a working student very early) and other things filling all of my time, I had to drop gaming at all, until I discovered it again two years ago.

5. Have you played RPGs pretty steadily, or was there some hiatus?
Fifteen years ran between the last session of the old times and the first one of the new experience: then yes, quite a hiatus. I’ve lost all the best years without gaming but sadly I can’t go back in time.

6. What’s at least one of your favorite things about role-playing? (* - see first list comment, below!)
Gathering with friends and having a good time with them: RPGs are a good if not the best means for meeting and socializing with people.

Actually, playing is cool but nothing compares with joking, punning, telling things inspired by the game and doing such idle things with the other friends sitting at the table, even if this means the adventure doesn’t advance a single step: this is what makes a session worthwhile and enjoyable though.

Even as a GM I back this kind of approach to RPGs: playing has to be a joy for everyone, not a job.

7. Do you prefer to spell it: "role-playing", "roleplaying", "role playing", or some other way?
I prefer «roleplaying»: but I’m crusading against the proliferation of useless hyphenates in Italian so I’m somewhat biased.

8a. Roughly how many different systems have you played?
Not many: for me it was all AD&D second edition back in the 90s (and the Forgotten Realms as a setting).
In the last two years I’ve tried some more systems: D&D 3.5 and 4 (the former is decent, while I can’t stand the latter), Dark Heresy (our campaign, now over, lasted almost two years and has been my first experience as a GM) and, as a player in many one-shots only, Gurps, Chtulhu, Werewolf and Vampires (none of which really satisfied me, neither as a setting nor system: I don't like horror settings and some of those systems tend to be overly complicated too).

Most recently I’ve discovered Space: 1889 and started a campaign for my regular group: so I noticed that behind the great setting a lacking system is hidden. I think I’ve found in Ubiquity (thanks to Leagues of Adventure) a fine substitute though: moreover, I’m told there are buckets of dice to be rolled in Ubiquity and that’s a win in my book.

Actually I don’t like to roll dice for everything as I like it better to leave most decisions to the narrative: but when it comes to rolling dice...well, I like to see a lot of them bouncing and hear all of them roaring on the table.

In my opinion, gaming without dice isn’t truly gaming.

8b. What percentage of those would you play again?
I’d say it’s around 50/50: I’ve tried out so few game systems that it’s quite easy to keep all of them them tracked. By the way, I’m always up for AD&D/D&D (both the second and 3.5 edition), Dark Heresy and Space: 1889/Leagues of Adventure/Ubiquity but there’s no way I’ll play again D&D 4th edition, Gurps, Werewolf and Vampires whilst, although it’s a fine system and setting, I wouldn’t play Chtulhu with pleasure, it’s just not my cup of tea.

9. Anything else you want us to know about you?
I was born and raised in a very game-unfriendly (if not utterly hostile to gaming) family: as I turned 10 years my parents had all my toys removed, since I started growing up and in their opinion playing was (and still is) just a waste of time.

Thus, discovering RPGs in the highschool was exciting whilst our gaming sessions tasted like the secret meetings of the Carbonarist movement: on second thought, given the odds I had to face it’s almost a wonder that I’ve become a roleplayer (and a gamer).

I’m glad and proud of it though!
