Hear ye, hear ye!

Step right up, step right up! Gather round, gather round! Before you stands the greatest achievement the diabolical sciences have to offer. That's right, ladies and gentlemen, I, Dokter Ekwillibreum, present to you for your enjoyment, the one, the only...

THE MAZE OF DETH!!!

A man in coveralls takes a paint brush and adds a tally mark to the scoreboard overlooking the field:

Final Score:

Total Challenge Chambers: 29

Unique Builders: 8

Individual Contestants: 43

Unique Users Sending Contestants: 16

Participants Lost to Each Room:
(Rooms are listed by Geeklist Item Number)
Room 2: 2
Room 3: 2
Room 4: 1
Room 5: 5
Room 6: 6
Room 7: 8
Room 8: 2
Room 9: 1
Room 10: 5
Room 11: 5
Room 13: 1
Room 14: 1
Room 16: 3

He then packs up his things and climbs down.

Dokter Ekwilibreum climbs onto a platform and walks to his podium, pounds his cane hard twice against the wooden planks and speaks loudly.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, another fine year here at the Maze of Deth, another year undefeated, though we did have several individuals make a fine effort. A shame so many of you thought to prepare your bodies, but none of you thought to work on your conversational skills.

But you did not come here for my babbling. You came here for blood and prizes. The blood has stopped flowing, for now, so let us dispense prizes, shall we?

The award for Deadliest Challenge goes to paulidale for the long fall (Room 7), correctly guessing that when the bottom drops out, most would know be able to roll with it when they hit rock bottom. With eight of the Maze’s forty-three participants dying in his room, he is responsible for nearly one fifth of all fatalities in the Maze this year. He shall receive a sum of 10bag for his contribution.

The prize for Audience Favorite Challenge as determined by audience thumbs of approval is a three way tie! With nine thumbs each, the award goes to Red Wine Pie for deciding many small traps are more fun than one big one, TMVM for his smashing cart, and Munkwunk for unleashing a swarm of bugs and other creeping crawly things! Rather than split the prize, we will give the full award to each! Red Wine Pie, TMVM, and Munkwunk, here is 10bag for each of you!

The award for Most Daring Escape is given to those whose successes we cannot help but stand and cheer for, again as indicated by audience thumbs of approval. In this case, we have another tie, but with himself. Midichlorian the Min Maxer received the most thumbs for survival three rooms running (rooms 3-5) for lawyering his way out of being polite, for making his way easily to the bottom of a watery grave and finding the luck to float back to the top, and for doing what we all wanted to do to him by launching himself out a cannon. dragontrainer, as Midi’s Next of Kin, could you kindly come collect the 10bag prize?

Of course, this mighty fine shindig is not called the Maze of Success or the Maze of Triumph. No, we're here for blood and the maze gave us that aplenty this year. The award for Best Death goes to... the lucky capybara, who nibbled the wrong trousers and ended up getting nibbled on himself! I declare a prize of 10bag goes to the owner of that poor, lucky capybera. Jowolf, collect your prize!

Of course, sometimes we love a contestant through no fault of their own. Perhaps it’s because they keep going when reason would make them turn around. Perhaps it’s the style with which to compete. Perhaps they just have a face you can’t help but root for. These people possess a certain ineffable something. Our award for Audience Favorite Participant goes to Lucky the capybera with a grand eight thumb introduction! As Lucky was not quite as lucky as he wished, could Jowolf kindly come to collect his 10bag award for him?

This year, we have a number of additional prizes to awarded on top of the usual awards for lethality and panache. We will now distribute those awards now.

For the Better Skilled than Lucky Award, awarded for making the longest run using no luck at all, I present this 10bag award to Monster Mike, the surviving kin of Gary, from Rat Queens, who managed to make it to the eleventh room on skill alone. Impressive, Gary. Really. From what I know of your work with the Rat Queens, I would never have guessed you had it in you.

On the other end of the spectrum, I present the Worst Lucky Charm Award to the participant with nothing going for them but a whole lot of luck, which ran out all too fast. This award is a tie between the Man with the Cheat Code and Eugene the Lucky, whose luck expired in Room 6. It seems a little luck will get you through a trap, but not even a lot of luck will get you through a room with a hundred. Could their next of kin and/or owners TomTi89 and ctimmins kindly come and collect your 10bag awards?

For the Cruelest Master Award, which is granted to the person who sent the most people to their death in the Maze, we have a three way tie, with Dragontrainer, TomTi89, and TMVM, who each sent eight poor souls in for our own twisted delight. You are clearly individuals after my own lack of a heart. Come forward, you three, and collect your 10bag prizes and my respect.
Of course, I am not wholly without heart, and as such, we have the Best Eulogy Award for the most touching memorial to our brave, fallen participants as determined by thumbs. Of the twenty-four eulogies delivered in the Eulogy Thread, the favored was the one given to Lucky the capybara by Jowolf. Come forward and collect your 10bag for your touching words.
Finally, the grand prize for Longest Run (though not so long as our champion from the last maze) goes to three brave advanturers! The maze stands once more undefeated, so we shall declare our victor from those who made it the farthest. Our “winners” are the lucky capybera, Lucky Nelly, and Matrix, who encountered sixteen rooms and overcame fifteen. I don’t blame the capybara for not being able to hold his own in an intellectual conversation, but as for Lucky Nelly and Matrix, I can only shake my head at the state of kids today. All the knowledge in the world at their fingertips, but don’t know how to think. I call forth their next of kin, Jowolf, paulidale, and Dragontrainer, come and collect your 50bag bounty, plus an additional 40bag in tips from the audience! You make us proud!"

Dokter Ekwilibreum climbs down from the pulpit, enters his carriage and begins to drive off, calling out from the window as he leaves the blood-stained field, "Until next time friends, always remember! Be cunning, be ruthless, be devious and dastardly, and when you can get away with it, cheat!"

Though prizes shall no longer be rewarded, brave souls may still attempt to defeat my diabolical labyrinth by following these posted rules:

How to Play:
1) Entering the Maze
- Introduce yourself at the gate so that we may memorialize you when you die. Your introduction should include your name and a bit about you, including your patented "Dokter Ekwilibreum DethTraps, LLC Six Trait Metric" scores, which will be twelve points divided among your Six Traits+1 (Might, Coordination, Fortitude, Knowledge, Cunning, Presence, and Luck).
- A single user may only send one poor brave soul through the maze per day. Or, to be more precise, you may not send another through on the same day your previous champion is killed.
- To make it easier for people to follow your progress, you may wish to make all of your posts a specific color or font style, so it is easily identified as the next room on your adventure to those following along.
- The contest ends on Sunday the 25th of October 1st of November when I wake up (roughly 7:00 am GMT-5).

2) Resolving Challenges:
- Because the geek randomizer won't let you roll more than twice on an item you did not create (and luck may require you to reroll several times), go to the Maze of Deth Roll Thread and create a comment for your character. This will allow you to place all of your rolls on a single post for easy reference later. If the roll is not made on your single character post in the comment thread, the roll does not count. A single thread reply can hold large sums of rolls, unlike a geeklist item which only allows a couple.
- For each challenge item, click "Add a roll" on the roll thread comment, inputting a roll of “3d6+X” (where X equals the rating of the appropriate trait. Under comments copy and paste the roll type (“Knowledge – Easy (1)” for instance). Some challenges allow for a choice of attributes. You must specify in the comments which attribute you will attempt to use when you make the roll. Be sure to include the trait bonus when you roll, as nothing is allowed to be added after you have rolled without Luck.
- Once you have your geekroll, copy that certified geekroll and paste it into your geeklist item comment describing your challenge attempt.
- If your geekroll plus your attribute score are lower than the challenge rating, you die. Describe your gruesome failure and put the word Dead in bold at the end of the geeklist comment.
- If your geekroll plus your attribute score equals or exceeds the challenge rating, you overcome the challenge. Describe how you overcame the death trap before you. Then repeat these steps over again at the next challenge.
- You may spend a permanent point of Luck to reroll (made as usual, except add "Luck" to the description) OR to add +2 spent to the roll you already made. You may uses Luck multiple times on the same challenge. Be sure to include in your description how your Luck saved you, and not skill.
- From time to time, if you are lucky and you make it far enough, you may grow a level in experience. After you have completed that Challenge Chamber, you may add two points to a single trait or one point to two separate traits. You may add points to Luck on a level up if you so choose. This is a permanent stat increase (except for Luck, which will gradually waste away).
- Any time your Traits change, either through a level up or using your luck, or some other reason, be sure to post your new traits at the end of the challenge that changed them.

3) The Audience
- Keep all discussion and audience chatter in the Geeklist Comments section at the bottom, not Item comments of each challenge. Do not post anything to a specific item unless it is your attempt at a challenge. Your only input on a geeklist item, if you are not taking on that challenge, is thumbing and tipping enjoyable victories and defeats.
- Don't forget to thumb and tip your favorite traps and attempts.
- Subscribe to see every attempt, every stellar victory and bloody defeat!
- And when your hero dies, be sure to head on over to the tavern and raise a glass to your fallen friend!

And now for a demonstration, I shall send in a volunteer... the first to attempt the maze.

You stand at the entrance gate to Dokter Ekwilibreum's Maze of Deth, the legendary gauntlet that brave heroes all the world over have come to see. Each year, hundreds test their mind and body against its dangers and horrors. Scything blades, acid, and shambling hordes are undead are par for the course. The corpses pile up, and every year the blood-thirsty audiences wonder, "Is this the year someone finally reaches the treasure horde at the center and proclaims himself King of the Maze?"

Giant brass gates loom before you, Dokter Ekwilibrium's mocking visage sneers at you from the molded relief hanging overhead. This is it. Victory or death lie just beyond the door. There is no third outcome. At either side of the gate stands a heavily armored knight, waiting for the signal, to open the door, to face your worst fears, and the most twisted, lethal threats the realm could devise.

To your left stands a herald with his horn, waiting for you to introduce yourself. Once you give him your name and Six Traits(+1) rankings, he will blow his horn, present you to the teeming masses, and signal the mad Dokter Ekwilibrium's minions to open the gate.

Step forward. Destiny awaits.

You enter a stone room, approximately ten feet by ten feet with a seven foot ceiling. The only exit is a large iron door, which to no one's surprise, is locked. The floor is absolutely littered with keys, hundreds if not more.

A placard hangs by the door:

The trapmaker wrote:
Only one of these keys opens this door to safety. The others lead to horrible certain doom in a manner dependent upon the key poorly chosen. This is a Cunning - Moderate (12) Challenge

You suspect you might also be able to break through the door, thought that would be a Might - Very Difficult [15] Challenge.

An empty room with naught in it but a door and a sign reading "Presence - Easy (10)"

When you try to open the door, iron clamps snap shut around your hand, snugly, but not uncomfortably. A sparking rod of lightning begins to descend toward your now metal covered hand. You hear a voice come from nowhere.

You enter a room with no other doors except the one you just passed through. You stand on a small platform overlooking a really deep pit of water. You cannot see the bottom. It's too deep. A sign floats on a buoy in the water.

The Sign Says wrote:
The exit from this room is through a tunnel at the bottom of the pit and then a quick swim back up to the surface on the other side. This is a Fortitude - Moderate (12) challenge.

You'll have to hold your breath all the way down, through however long the tunnel is, and then all the way back up to the next room. It's a long way. Do you think you can make it? Do you have a choice?

You exit the small round opening of water to see the stone floor end 10 feet in front of you at a wide black chasm. A torch hangs from the wall behind you, and at floor level a 2 inch wide stone border follows the wall to the other end, over 100 feet away.

Next to you, a metal tube with an opening large enough for you (and all of your gear) stands on two large wheels, a string exiting from the back. On this tube is a sign.

The Sign Says wrote:

Solid cushioned floor and the exit lie across the Chasm of Nothing. Aim well then take flight toward your destination by entering and lighting this flame powered contraption. This is a Knowledge - Moderate [12] Challenge.

Keep your hands and feet inside until liftoff. Unless you want to try the ledge and climb your way to safety via the Dexterity - Very Difficult [15] Challenge.

The doors creaks open and a cold, echoey chamber is revealed. The exit door is plainly obvious, some 100 feet opposite from where you now stand.

Unfortunately, the floor is covered with mouse traps, wolf traps, bear traps, man traps and even owlbear traps. It will take a great effort of coordination to pick your way through these traps to the exit.

A Medium (13) Coordination test is required to reach the door without suffering a lingering death caught between the teeth of a thousand traps.

Or you could succeed in both a Simple (10) Knowledge and a Simple (10) Cunning test and discover the way to neutralise all the traps. Perhaps using that stick lying against the wall...

The door opens easily and you crawl into a wide but low passage that disappears into the distance as far as you can make out with your megre light source. A minute or two scurrying along the passage and the end is still not in sight. You begin to regret this path.

The evil Implementor wrote:

Suddenly, the floor dissolves and you find yourself falling into an abyss in total darkness. With nothing to grab onto to slow your descent and no idea when to roll with the landing, you brace for the inevitable impact...

Fortitude - Difficult(14)

Dead or alive, you end up at the bottom of a deep well with a door to your side.

Fresh from the cart smashing stress release exercise, you move onward and come to a seemingly impassable chasm. You quickly spy a narrow rope strung taught all the way across to a platform with a door at the far end.

A crude wooden sign wrote:
Make a Coordination - Difficult (14) check to walk across the tightrope.

Alternatively, make a Cunning - Very Easy (8) check to notice the arched bridge a couple of dozen meters along the chasm and to use that instead.

When you touch the door handle, the bridge, the platform and the door all from view. They are replaced by glowing rectangles stretching into blackness to your left and right. While you focus on one door it seems to draw closer to you, and you can almost see what lays on the other side in the swirling colors.

While you survey the shimmering portals, the others start to disappear - one here, one there, and there's no guarantee that the safe exit will last!

The next room is empty save for a key sitting on the floor and a door on the far wall with five separate locks on it. You also notice a seam running through the center of the floor as though it might open, and a number of holes in the wall where arrows or spikes or some foul liquid or gas might pour in. The key, it appears, is made of an incredibly dense metal, and will require a Might - Difficult (14) check to lift. Once you manage to hoist the thing, you will need to make a Cunning - Difficult (14) check to determine which locks need to be opened and in what order or else one of any number of traps might trigger.

If you succeed in overcoming this room, you may gain a level and add two to your Six Traits(+1), either one to two traits or two to a single one. Be sure to post your updated traits in future rooms.

You're feeling pretty awesome after surviving that last room, but your sense of accomplishment doesn't last long.

You enter a room filled with all manner of bugs, insects, and creepy crawly things. They're crawling over literally every inch of the room, including a door you can barely make out on the other side, they look hungry.

You're not sure how to tell what a hungry bug looks like, but they must be hungry. And you look like the tastiest thing they've seen in a long time.

Immediately to your left is a box containing two objects: an over-sized can of bug spray and a single strike-anywhere match. You've got one chance: make a Coordination - Moderate (12) check to save yourself.

You glance around seeing only bright smudges from the hurried burning. You stagger through to the next room, not really know where you are going. This didn't help as this room is full of blinking and shifting lights and colours. It makes you very dizzy and completely disorientated. Something speaks:

Shaking your head to stave off the last tiny vestiges of dizziness you raise you eyes to see a long narrow corridor stretching far into the distance. The walls are solid and the floor is stone. The ceiling however looks ...odd. Your notice a sign and peer closer to see

The sign wrote:
From the sea below now from above, The world turned on it's head. Are you ready for what is to come. Can you endure? Fortitude: Medium-13

You steel yourself and take a few steps forward expecting the worst. On your third pace you hear a click and a mechanical whirring starts/ The ceiling starts to slide back and from the the now slowly revealing hole comes forth a torrent of dead fish and the corridor starts to fill.

The door slides silently to the side, dark alcoves are recessed into the walls, each with a candle burning softly, wafting in a gentle, un-felt breeze. That is not what captures your attention, an eerie humming weaves it's way from a raised podium in the center of the room, you cannot see the singer in the dark, but it seems to be female. The song makes you sleepy, peaceful, then a mental slap stirs you from the spell, and the humming becomes lyrics in your head:

Sing a song of slumber
For demons I cannot number
Rest peacefully, enchanted-lullaby
Permit not an alibi,
Accomp'ny this lyrical weaving,
or soon you shan't be leaving.

You realize you must sing and join in her harmony to keep the beasts asleep and pacified. Nervously you step forward into the chamber, and startle at a snort from your left. Swallowing your fear, you raise your voice in song...

Singing in tune with the muse requires a Medium (12) Persona check. If you fail, you then have to fight the demons that are roused by your discordant caterwauling; which would take a Difficult (15) Might challenge to overcome them all and survive.

You step into the next room and a faced by the back of the large armchair. You notice there is another identical one facing it. A man's voice, old but steely, surprises you

"Come you buffoon, stop gawping like the slack jawed village idiot you obviously are."

You step around the chair to see a wizened but muscular man looking thoughtfully at you. More importantly he also has a loaded crossbow levelled at your chest.

"Come sit and discuss with me the finer things in life but be aware that I do not suffer fools gladly and I have an inkling I will not be suffering you for very long. Maybe your imbecilic features hide a sparkling intellect and I will be pleasantly surprised, unlikely, but we shall see.

You take a seat opposite the man picking up a scrap of paper as you sit

As you enter the room, you see something uncommon for the Maze, smiles! Two children run up to you and grab your hand, pulling you gently towards the center of the room where they have a game set up. You sit down to join them; you can certainly use a break.

Win the game, and you get to leave the room. No problem right? Playing games is your life (or at least it was before entering the Maze).

As they open the box you realize you have to face your greatest test yet. Candy Land.

The box lid is set next to you and you find yourself reading the rules:

The Box Lid Rules Writers wrote:

To play the game, paste the following into the Geekroller.

1custom3{YOU; Bobby; Tina}

If the Geekroller result is YOU, you win the game and pass to the next room.

If YOU is not the result, you must make a Fortitude - 10 Challenge.

Should you survive, you gather the will to play another game. Paste the custom die roll into the Geekroller. If YOU is the result, you win the game and pass to the next room, sanity intact.

If YOU is not the result, you must make a Fortitude - 12 Challenge.

Keep playing until you win the game, each time increasing the Fortitude Challenge rating by two after losing the game.

Will Candy Land be the death of you?

Before you open the door, you smell something. Something...familiar? Nah, can't be, until you open the door. She stands there in front of you, dayligh streaming behind her, while she washes some vegetables in the sink.

"Grandma?" you ask, incredulously.

"Hello, dear! How nice of you to stop by, haven't visited in ages it would seem."

You look around, overwhelmed, everything as you remember, fresh baked bread in the oven, the island counter top covered in many cooking implements in constant use. A pot of something delicious simmers on the stove, the smells taking you back to your childhood.

"Would you like a cookie? Just baked them this morning! Now just have a seat at the table and I'll get you a nice cold glass of milk to go with it," gran says cheerfully.

How can this be? How...what does it matter, you think, it would be nice to rest and stay awhile...

This requires a Medium (12) Cunning check to leave, or you stay forever trapped in a pleasant dream. If you pass, you realize it is a dream and you awake, finding yourself slumped against the wall of an empty room, the smells of the kitchen fading from your nostrils. Its single occupant, a wretched creature, cries and hides in a corner and points to the way out.

It doesn't seem wise to hang around any longer, make a Coordination - Difficult (15) check to get away before being exterminated.

Alternatively, make a Presence - Utterly and completely insane (23) check to weasel your way out of extermination.

You enter a hastily constructed room. From the ceiling dangle a number of blades of various shapes and sizes. It seems they've all been lashed to a net, which hangs from the ceiling via loosely tied knots. Also hanging from the Net of Sharp Death is a key, which is tied especially securely. On the far side of the room is a wooden door, not particularly thick or well crafted. Three spikes jut out from it, perhaps a foot and a half apart. There's a lock on the door.

A small wooden plaque haphazardly nailed beside the door has a hastily scrawled note.

Quote:
Dis iz a sereeus trap in yoo iz not gonna serviv! Cuz if yooz pull on da kee den yoo wil hav a binch bench bunch lot of sordz fallin on yur hed. In i sez dis iz a smarts of 100 trap an no wun iz gonna liv tru it!

Realistically, however, it's maybe a Coordination Easy (10) challenge tops to avoid the falling blades, or Might Very Easy (8) to kick the flimsy bit of wood calling itself a door in. They did say anyone could help build the maze.

Though the experience of this room may not have been much, if you succeed, it's enough to push you to the next level. Add two to a single attribute or add one to two different attributes. Post your w attributes for posterity.

The next room is full of water and there is an iron door on the floor. You try the door, it is immovable under the weight of all this water. You then notice that the water in the room is draining away slowly. Very slowly.

A shaky hand wrote:
Be strong and hold thy breath and thee will live.

Make a Fortitude Medium (12) check to be able to hang on until the water level drops enough for you to breath.

You move on to the next room, your boot kicking a stone and sending it sliding across the floor. It comes to rest at the foot of a giant creature. Horns crown its head, and hair covers most of its body. Startled, you begin to search for somewhere to run, and see a second creature behind it, larger and scarier.

You prepare for battle when you notice the creatures appear exhausted. Then, you hear a sharp cry from deeper into the room, and a look of exasperation on the creatures' faces. They move and point you to what appears to be a wooden cage, open on the top. Lying inside is a smaller creature which is beginning to stir. Another cry pierces the silence as the small creature begins to roll over.

The large creatures point again and you notice they are avoiding making any noise. They start gesticulating wildly, and you quickly make out what they wish to convey with their actions.

The Creatures' Gestures Translate As Clearly As If They wrote:
You woke them, you get them back to sleep with a Presence - Difficult [14] Challenge.

Succeed, and they happily - and quite forcibly - send you to the next room.

Fail, and it would require a Fortitude - Impossible [100] Challenge to survive the mauling from the exhausted, enraged parents whose child you woke, which as the name suggests, is impossible.

The door to the room is slow to open. Very slow...glacially. After a quick nap, the extremely thick metal door finally slides open enough for you to slip in.

The room is humid, and it glows. You see barrels laying scattered around the room. Some barrels are over-turned, a thick, sickly greenish liquid oozing out and covering the floor. The green phosphorescence of the sludge reflects off the highly polished metal walls, allowing you to see the the exit on the far side.

You start to feel nauseous, sweat breaks out on your skin, and your nose begins to bleed. With growing horror you sprint to the other door.

Make a Medium (12) Fortitude check, or succumb to radiation poisoning.

You enter the next room and notice it is in complete silence. Ahead of you is what looks like an ethereal orchestra attempting to noiselessly play their instruments. They looked very upset about the veil of silence everywhere and approach you ominously as if you are the source of the problem.

Welcome to the millennial
Music of the Ages Concert.
All listeners welcome.

Crudely scrawled underneath,
a ghost wrote:
please bring our sound back.

Make a Difficult Knowlege (14) check to determine the source of the mystical silence. Then make a Super Easy Might, Coordination or Cunning (6) (your choice) check to remove it.

If you fail, the ghosts put a grisly end to your expedition.

If you succeed, the band starts playing loudly and wildly and you can pass to the next room resisting the temptation to demonstrate your terpsichorean prowess. As you close the door behind you a pair of very tired, extremely angry and slightly radioactive monsters burst through the entrance looking to silence everything once and for all...

The first room is not terribly large. Two iron doors are built into the walls, one to the east, the other to the west. Carved into each door is a bronze bust of a minotaur, each bearing a scowl. Magic emanates from them, and you can feel their eyes following you. Pacing around the room is a large minotaur, the kind you couldn't take even in an unfair fight, and the last of that giant's strength has faded anyway. The living minotaur carries a sizable club adorned with all manner of blades, shards, and spiky bits.

He turns to you, towering over you by several feet at least. The muscles of his arms and chest ripple like a flag in the wind, and steam rises from his nose. Staring you down, he speaks in a rumbling bass that shakes your bones.

"Before you are two doors, each with a mystic guardian. One door leads to excruciating death. The other leads to the next chamber. Only the guardians may open the doors. You may ask of them anything you please, but consider yourself warned. Of the three of us, one of us always tells the truth, one of us always lies, and one of us likes to maim squishy little things that ask silly questions."

A plaque on the wall lets you know this is a Cunning - Moderate (12) challenge. Everyone has heard this one before.

Of course, this minotaur looks serious about bashing anyone who asks questions, silly or otherwise. You can either make the cunning check to figure out a good question on the first try or make a Fortitude - Very Difficult (14) check to take a serious beating while you use process of elimination to find the right thing to ask.
