This GeekList serves as the In-Character (IC) "thread" for the Masks of Nyarlathotep (1st & 2nd edition) campaign run with Cthulhu Dark (Original Version). To join, please review the recruitment and character creation instructions and then jump in on the OOC thread. There's also a wiki tracking the running theories and key clues gathered thus far.

Each GeekList Item corresponds to a different "scene" in the campaign, some of which may be taking place simultaneously! Players, please be sure to keep your character in the same scene or explain why he has moved from one location to another.

The table below is a non-judgmental status update of both players and Investigators. If your Investigator is grayed out, don't worry; it just means you haven't posted in a while. Jump in whenever you can!

Players who have been posting recently are at the top in white. They are the ones around whom I will pace the game; if they've all posted, I will proceed with the game, even if it hasn't been 24 hours.

Chapter 1 - Dr. Carter's Flat

Summary: Rodger Sallows wanders into New York. Occult author Jackson Elias calls for an "investigative team." In response, various loosely connected individuals convene at Dr. Carter's flat. A few plans arise.

Rodger Sallows might not have thought to look up his old friend Jackson Elias had it not been for the coincidence of Dr. Carter running into him at Penn Station. It was January 5, 1925, and change was afoot everywhere. Il Duce had just proclaimed a dictatorship in Italy, and a broad had become a governor for the first time ever. Sallows had been drifting for a while now, but thought maybe it was time for some of his own changes. Looking up Elias might be just what he needed.

Unfortunately, Elias proved harder to locate than he'd thought. With a little help from Dr. Carter, who had been dining with Alphonso Molina when Sallows stumbled into his apartment, they tracked down Jackson's publisher Jonah Kensington, who explained that Elias was out of the country on "another project." Kensington offered to put the pair in touch with Elias, whom he expected back in the States sometime in the next month or so. They agreed to this kind offer and went their separate ways.

A few days later, Kensington alerted Sallows and Carter to a telegram he'd received for them from Elias, announcing his imminent return and requesting an "investigative team" to help him in his research into the infamous Carlyle Expedition from a few years back. Sallows had little to offer on this front, but Carter thought to broach the subject with his recent acquaintence Molina, who also happened to have just met Joseph McNeil, another academic interested in his work, and had gotten back in touch with Silvana Soniere, an old family friend.

Unsure such a ragtag group of individuals who'd only just met would be of any use to the esteemed Elias, Carter nonetheless convened the group at his apartment to discuss preparations for the storied author's arrival on January 15, just five days hence.

And here is where our story begins. Introduce yourselves. Suggest what you'd like to do between now and the 15th. I'll take up the gauntlet 24 hours hence, unless I've heard from everyone sooner, in which case I'll just get on with it.

Chapter 2 - The New York Public Library

Summary: McNeil reads more of Elias's books than Molina does. Also uncovers newspaper archives of the Carlyle Expedition, which Elias had been researching. Clippings reveal the expedition's path, principals, and eventual demise.

McNeil had told Molina to meet him at the library at 8 AM the next day, but did not wait for him to get started on his research. Some days he just could not fathom why some American academics held "research" to be such a challenging activity. He breezed his way through the newspaper archives, finding stupendous amounts of material on the Carlyle Expedition.

After a quick lunch, he returned to the library to skim through Elias's seven books, all published by Jonah Kensington's Prospero Press. Although Elias writes in a down-to-earth manner, skeptical of everything he has seen and heard, the constant focus on the occult, with a particular emphasis on death cults, was a bit more than McNeil had bargained for.

What did McNeil read about that was so disturbing? How does he respond? Did Molina or anyone else make it to the library to help him? What, if anything, will either do with the information uncovered about the Carlyle Expedition?

Chapter 3 - A Chat with Jonah Kensington

Summary: Sallows visits Elias's publisher and learns of survivor(s) from the Carlyle Expedition.

Jonah Kensington

Still feeling a bit out of place, even when one-on-one with someone he knows, Sallows kept hoping Carter would show up to help him with his interview of Jonah Kensington. He managed to make small talk for about fifteen minutes but then got directly down to business when Kensington tactlessly began asking him about the War. (Roll for Interview 1d6 = (2) = 2) Perhaps put off by the abrupt change in subject, Kensington was not terribly forthcoming about Elias's research. He explained that Elias believed a "blood cult" had massacred the Carlyle Expedition and added that Elias had mentioned in a note that he did not believe all the principals of the expedition had been killed.

Does anyone else show up to help Sallows out? (If so, go ahead and roll.) What, if anything, will you do with the information Kensington has revealed prior to Elias's arrival?

Chapter 4 - Awaiting Elias

Summary: Carter learns of Elias's agitated state over a "global conspiracy." McNeil becomes suspicious of Penhew and aware of Huston's unorthodox career in psychoanalysis. Sallows tries to keep up. Information is shared at the Coffee Pot. Elias calls for a meeting at the Chelsea that night.

The next few days passed quickly, and members of the "investigative team" have gathered at The Coffee Pot, an unassuming corner cafe a few blocks from Kensington's Prospero Press. Here, while they await word of Elias's arrival, the investigators share what they have learned from the last few days.

Dr. Carter had the pleasure of dining with Kensington a couple days prior. (Carter's Investigation Roll for chat with Kensington 1d6 = (4) = 4) Sallows interjected that he'd already talked to Kensington, and the others patiently listened to him recount his conversation again. Dr. Carter smiled politely when he was finished and proceeded to add "just a couple other notes to Rodger's fine account" of Kensington's knowledge. After lunch, Kensington had apparently taken Carter back to his office to show him the letter he'd received from Elias, mentioning that not all members of the Carlyle Expedition were dead. The note, written last August, had also made reference to a set of notes Elias was sending Kensington for which he needed an advance. Kensington explained that he'd wired the money to Hong Kong, and then hadn't heard from Elias again until last month (December), when Elias called him, sounding a bit crazed. He said he'd been to China, Egypt, and London, where he'd "dug up a lot of stuff." He said he'd seen some "unbelieveable" things and began to rant about a monstrous, world-wide "conspiracy." A little worried at this unusually frantic behavior from his friend, Kensington had suggested that Elias "calm down," but Elias retorted that he "couldn't afford to" because there was some "timetable" he hadn't worked out yet but that the "clock was ticking." It was clear to Dr. Carter that Kensington was correct in feeling concerned; these sounded like the ravings of a madman.

The group was hushed for a moment, taking in everything they had just heard from Dr. Carter. The only one who didn't seem all that shocked was McNeil, who spoke first after the silence.

Chapter 5 - The Chelsea

Summary: The investigators arrive at the Chelsea to meet Elias. Sallows breaks down Room 410's locked door to reveal a grisly scene. Sallows and McNeil face death. Only Sallows survives. The attackers flee.

The investigators were tense as they arrived at the Chelsea one by one. Sallows was genuinely concerned for his old friend Elias and might have hoped to air his concerns with Dr. Carter, but Carter's erratic behavior made Sallows want to keep his distance. He had hoped to keep talking to McNeil when he arrived at the Chelsea, and so was a little disappointed to see him and Carter already absorbed in conversation. Once again, Sallows felt the outsider, but it was a role that had always suited him well. Taking a moment to collect himself, he ordered a drink at the other of the end of the bar.

Meanwhile, Carter and McNeil were engrossed in conversation. Carter was attempting to elucidate the finer points of psychoanalysis, careful to use terminology McNeil, whose imagination had thus far revealed a lack of discipline unbecoming of an academic engineer, would understand without getting too excited by the various oversimplifications Carter was forced to make. It was a fine line, and McNeil made it all the more frustrating by constantly interrupting him, asking him about the Carlyles, the Posts, the Hustons.

McNeil was trying to anticipate the next pause in Carter's meandering monologue about some celebrity patient he'd never treated but nonetheless claimed to know like the back of his hand. He guessed he wouldn't get a word in edgewise for another 8 to 10 minutes, which would put them well past the 8 PM meeting time, so he glanced at the clock on the wall and announced it was time for them to "go up." He noticed Sallows sitting alone at the other end of the bar but did not see anyone else from the investigative team nearby. No matter; he remained doubtful that Elias would even be in his room.

Chapter 7 - Madison Square Park

Summary: The investigators overcome their shock at the nearby park. The paranoia begins. A reporter imposes himself. The investigators agree to consort elsewhere.

Molina had by now fled from Room 410 and was trembling on a bench in Madison Square Park. A cursory review of the mangled corpse had turned up a couple business cards, but he couldn't concentrate enough to bring his shaking hands to pull them from his pocket. All he could think of was that symbol, a brand now emblazoned in his mind, representing something dark and eternal.

It had been brutally carved on the corpse's forehead. Why had he looked? Molina fingered the cross around his neck, slowly realizing that he was regaining his senses. But he also was shocked to find this rune as deeply imprinted in his psyche as the cross itself, as if something he had long forgotten or repressed had now been awakened.

He now tried to busy his mind with something, anything to distract him and found himself looking at the two business cards he'd found:

Business Card #1, front and back

Business Card #2

Meanwhile, Dr. Carter wasn't sure how he knew to find Molina in Madison Square Park, several blocks from the Chelsea, but he wasn't at all surprised to see him there. There was something comforting about the bustling park, away from places of business but still filled with people, life, civilization, and that ridiculous Christmas tree they still hadn't taken down.

He sat down next to Molina, who was flipping a pair of business cards between his fingers, and the two shared a moment of silence.

Placeholder for flashback or new character background.

But really just filler to make up for the fact that I skipped this chapter number by accident and would like the chapters to sync up with the GeekList Item numbers.

Chapter 9. Shamrock

Summary: Sallows may or may not have gotten a drink at what may or may not have been a rumored "speakeasy." He read letters found in Elias's room linking his research to Cairo and Harvard. Gabriella Rosellini introduces herself.

Sallows had to get a drink, and couldn't stand Dr. Carter's expensive, overly complex spirits. He wanted a whiskey, and he wanted it cheap and straight. Besides, Carter and Molina would need to overanalyze everything before deciding on any actual action, so Sallows figured he wouldn't be missed, at least not for a little while.

He slipped down his favorite alley on the way to Dr. Carter's, dropped down the stairwell, mentioned the secret catchphrase, and was ushered into "Shamrock," a hidden basement-turned-pub. He hadn't been able to shake that feeling of being followed but for now he's willing to let paranoia take a back seat as he settles onto a stool at the bar, ready to sate his growing appetite for oblivion. He put back two shots and pulled out the letters he found before the buzz set in.

Sallows gently placed the letters on the counter, lost in thought. Staring at the world through the bottom of the thick cut glass of the whiskey tumbler, he was brought back to the now by the juddering screech of chair on polished wooden floor. To his surprise taking a seat beside him was a woman in her late twenties. Her dress was barely acceptable polite society, with a twist toward practicality. Her hair was dark with a slight kink and was pulled close against her scalp, but it was her eyes, set within sharp features, that took him, seeming to stare straight through him. There was a bitterness there in the set of her straight lips against her smooth tan skin.

She drew heavily on the cigarette in her hands and then exhaled a stream of smoke towards the ceiling, eyes fixed on Sallows.

"Was it you.......

...... Are you the bastard that killed Jackson?"

Chapter 10. Back at Dr. Carter's

Summary: Dr. Carter and Molina dally while awaiting the others. Sallows and Rosellini arrive just before that annoying reporter McCall. But damn, he's got a lot of information. The broad seems to know a lot too. After toasts to Elias, the group plans its next moves.

Nothing could have been more comforting to Dr. Carter than his modestly furnished flat. Molina nearly collapsed on his couch as he went to his bar to fix a stiff drink. They'd lost Sallows somehow, and the two found release in joking about their missing comrade's impetuous misfires. Who knew where he was? But they were amazed by his grit, and assumed he'd show his face soon.

Sure enough, Sallows, flushed and breathless, made his entrance a short while later. Dr. Carter looked at the clock and began to worry that noisome reporter might also soon make an appearance, so he wasted no time in urging the trio to get down to business.

Chapter 11 - Prospero Press

Summary: Dr. Carter and McCall procure Elias's Nairobi Notes from Kensington. They learn of other notes but enrage Kensington in pressing for them.

It was clear that Kensington had gotten little sleep the night before. His eyes were bloodshot, and his usually chipper mood was dampened by a weighty sadness. Dr. Carter introduced McCall, half expecting Kensington to crack another joke about the ramshackle nature of his "investigative team," but Kensington barely registered the man's presence.

Unfazed, McCall proceeded with his questioning, working steadily through his notes from the night before. Kensington seemed pleased by the hopeful intent to avenge his friend's death and slowly perked up over the course of the interview. With a little rummaging, he procured Elias's notes and handed them to Dr. Carter, mentioning that these were the "notes we discussed before, the ones sent from Hong Kong, when Elias was still lucid." Kensington himself was planning on making funeral arrangements, as he knew of no next of kin for the elusive Elias. Reminder of this task seemed to shift Kensington's attention, and he asked McCall if he had any more questions, as he had a busy day and would prefer to retire early.

Chapter 12 - Emerson Imports

Summary: Molina strikes out on his own to Emerson Imports. Elias had been there. Molina learns of the Ju-Ju House, purchaser of goods from Mombasa.

Molina got up late and took his time finding Emerson Imports, which was just as well, since Emerson himself seemed to just then returning from lunch when Molina arrived at the warehouse. It was a long, narrow building with loading docks on both ends and freight piled high inside. Emerson seemed friendly enough and seemed genuinely interested in what a man of Molina's apparent station was doing in the warehouse district...

Chapter 13. The Barnardo Family Hotel

Summary: Sallows gains passage for himself and McNeil's body to Europe. Rosellini learns of Elias's pursuit of Africa's Dark Sects, now mysteriously disappeared. Information is limited on "Faraz Najir."

While Dr. Carter and McCall visited Prospero Press, Rosellini commandeered the telephone at the Barnardo family hotel. She started with the most straightforward of her calls, giving Miriam Atwright a call at Harvard. Atwright was quite friendly, showing genuine curiosity about Rosellini's slight accent. She explained that Elias had been seeking Africa's Dark Sects, a book that had mysteriously disappeared a few months before. By "mysteriously," she meant that the book had literally vanished, leaving behind an "unspeakable odor." Atwright knew little of the book itself. Rosellini thanked Atwright for the information.

She then proceeded to call up a few of her contacts, some of whom McNeil had been directed to just a couple days before. Unfortunately, none of them have heard of Faraz Najir, and in fact few of them claim any familiarity with the "fraudulent street vendors" in Cairo's Old Quarter. However, one contact does mention that all dealers in "antiquities" must be licensed, so Najir, assuming he runs a legitimate enterprise, would be on file somewhere in Cairo.

Chapter 14. The Diner

Summary: McCall and Dr. Carter read Elias's Nairobi notes. Too much to consider for now. Many names, leads, possible connections. No conclusions.

Dr. Carter and McCall returned to the Coffee Pot, down the street from Prospero Press, shoved a couple tables together in the corner, and began poring over Elias's notes. There are eight sets, each extensive, and it took both investigators till closing to work through them all. They seemed well-organized and complete and yet lacked clear conclusions, connections, or themes.

Set #1 set forth the offices, officials, and tribes Elias visited while in Kenya searching for material concerning cults and cult rituals. The only conclusion Elias seemed to draw is that he does not believe the official version of the Carlyle massacre.

Set #2 described his trip to the massacre site. He noted in particular that the earth there was completely barren and that all the tribes of the region avoided the area, saying it was cursed by the "God of the Black Winds," whose home is atop the nearby mountain.

Set #3 was an interview with Johnstone Kenyatta, who said the Carlyle murders might have been performed by the "Cult of the Bloody Tongue," reputedly based in the mountains and whose high priestess is a part of the Mountain of the Black Winds. Elias seemed skeptical, despite Kenyatta's insistence. In quotes, Elias recorded that the regional tribes fear and hate the Bloody Tongue, that tribal magic is of no protection, and that the cult's god is not of Africa.

Set #4 followed up on the Kenyatta interview. Elias confirmed from several good sources that the Bloody Tongue existed, but found no firsthand evidence. Tales included children stolen for sacrifice. Creatures with great wings were said to come down from the Mountain of the Black Winds to carry people off. The cult worshiped a god unknown to folklorits, one fitting no traditional African pattern. Elias mysteriously mentioned "Sam Mariga, rr-sta."

Set #5 was a single sheet reminding Elias that the Cairo-based portion of the Carlyle itinerary must be examined carefully. He believed that the reason prompting Carlyle's Kenyan sidetrip was on the Nile.

Set #6 was a lengthy interview with Lieutenant Mark Selkirk, leader of the men who actually found the remains of the Carlyle expedition. Selkirk said that the bodies were remarkably undecayed for the length of time which they laid in the open, "almost as if decay itself wouldn't come near the place." Furthermore, the men had been torn apart, as if by animals, but Selkirk could not comprehend what sort of animal it could have been. "Unimaginable," he said. Selkirk agreed that the Nandis may have had something to do with the episode, but suspected that the charges against the ringleaders were trumped up. "It wouldn't be the first time," he stated. Selkirk also confirmed that there were no Caucasians found among the dead; only the corpses of the Kenyan bearers were scattered across the barren plain.

Set #7 was another single sheet, describing a run-in with Nails Nelson at the Victoria Bar in Nairobi. Nelson claimed to have seen Jack Brady, one of the members of the Carlyle Expedition, alive in March 1923 in Hong Kong, less than two years before. Brady had been friendly but guarded and not talkative, so Nelson hadn't pressed the conversation.

Set #8 outlined a possible structure for Elias's book on the Carlyle expedition, but it was mostly featureless, with entries like "then tell what happened" and "explain why."

Mentally exhausted, Dr. Carter and McCall stuffed Elias's notes back together and left the Coffee Pot before having to deal with another angry expulsion.

Chapter 15. The Public Library

Summary: Rosellini and Sallows scour the public library. Africa's Dark Sects shall not be found. Questions remain.

Rosellini and Sallows had no idea what was in store for them at the library. A simple matter of looking up a book turned into hours of searching for a needle in a haystack. No catalog mentioned the book. No subcollection made any reference to it. No librarian had ever heard of it, even the one who fancied himself an expert in the "occult." Rosellini was thankful to have Sallows with her, lest she would have had to continue her exhaustive search into the next day.

It wasn't until well into the evening that she finally found any information on it. An obscure magazine of book reviews mentioned Africa's Dark Sects in a blurb towards the back of an issue from a few years ago. Apparently only thirteen copies had been published, and all had been reportedly destroyed by authorities in Europe, where the book had been distributed. Clearly, Harvard's copy had been an exception, but now that copy was also gone.

They would have to wait until the next day to conduct research into how books might mysteriously "vanish." There simply wasn't enough time that afternoon to fit it in.

Chapter 16. 1 Ransom Court

Summary: Molina visits the Ju-Ju House. Its proprietor has a few screws loose. Molina hears lies and steals drawings. Sallows comes to the rescue.

Molina's cab driver raised an eyebrow when he heard of the destination. When Molina subtly inquired about "the neighborhood," the cabbie informed him it was in Harlem and wondered aloud what Molina wanted to do with "a bunch of darkies." Molina withheld any further remarks.

Dropping Molina off at a dirty alley off 137th Street, the cabbie sped off, the instant Molina paid the exorbitant fare. The alley opened into a small court overlooked by crumbling tenements. The only doors from the court are a boarded up door to an abandoned shop and the glass door to the "Ju-Ju House," next to which is a modest display window featuring various pieces of "African" art.

Molina had been to areas far worse in his travels, but nonetheless felt a slight disease. He had been unable to reach the other investigators and knew that for now he was very much on his own.

Chapter 17. Carter Headquarters

Summary: The investigators marvel at the jigsaw puzzle of clues before them, contemplate some of them, brainstorm follow-up actions. They become concerned over Molina's absence. Sallows fetched him and sees mask of his would-be killer among the stolen drawings.

Dr. Carter and McCall were already there when Rosellini and Sallows arrived at Dr. Carter's flat. Their congregation in the same place as the night before brought back a somber mood, but it quickly enlivened as everyone shared the details of their day. The only person missing was Molina...

Chapter 18. The New York Comet

Summary: McCall gathers information on Carlyle and other members of the expedition. Then visits Medical Affairs Board to retrieve Huston's files on Carlyle. Accidentally runs into danger and borrows said files.

McCall arrived at the Comet offices early the next morning. He'd stopped at a newsstand and picked up a couple of competitor papers. After skimming them he banged out a couple short articles on some speakeasy raids before the newsroom get busy.

McCall endured an ass-chewing from his editor about yesterday's absence, then explained that he had been working on a big story. He laid out the outline for his boss: prominent author uncovers conspiracy, murdered under strange circumstances, no suspects. He promised a juicy payoff if he can get a few days to follow up some leads. It seemed to work, and he settled into his desk to continue his research.

Chapter 19. The Magic of Shopping

Summary: Rosellini has an unlikely encounter with Carter the Great, legendary stage magician. She momentarily questions her beliefs about magic. He seems to know more, then less, then more than he lets on. He promises to amaze her.

Rosellini had the urge to put off her shopping yet again. There just seemed to be too many threads, too many unanswered questions to figure out, and she felt she could spend days investigating and still not be done. But she knew she couldn't go to Elias's funeral without suitable attire, and it occurred to her that a morning shopping might help take her mind off things and allow her to refocus in a new way later on.

In the women's section of Wanamaker's, Rosellini was surprised to see a man circulating amidst the dresses and fabrics. Even more surprising was that she seemed to recognize this man. She couldn't quite place him, but she felt a sudden urgency to figure it out. She noticed a couple other women looking his direction, and one of them eventually went up to him. Rosellini moved a little closer to overhear their conversation. The woman had asked him something, to which he seemed to become irritated, swirled with an almost dramatic flair, and began to rush off towards the cashier. The woman's eyes were wide with excitement, and she turned to Rosellini, not at all self-conscious about Rosellini's eavesdropping, and announced, "That was Carter! Carter the Great!"

It all came back to Rosellini in an instant. Carter the Great, the American-born magician more famous abroad than in his own country, had done a quick stint in Cairo while she had been there. She knew better than to take his "magic" seriously, but mystery in all its forms had always fascinated her, so she couldn't help having gone to see his show. Now, here he was, in the same store as she, right when she was trying to learn about how things "disappear." She had no idea what he would be able to tell her that she'd actually believe, but at this point maybe it was time to take a leap of faith. Besides, if this happenstance could happen, who knew? Maybe, just maybe...

Chapter 20. The Streets of New York

Summary: Sallows finds fellow veteran Sam Dudiak, now a drunk. He sobers him up and prepares to deploy him to the Ju-Ju House.
____________

The next morning, Sallows was initially reluctant to return his old stomping grounds in the Lower East Side, but as he got closer he found himself feeling a bit anxious with anticipation. He'd blended in with high society well enough, but it was always a struggle to keep up, to fit in. He mused that to some extent, "fitting in" was all it was about for all them, not just him. As he neared the tenements that had taken him in during the hardest of times, relief came as he dropped all facades.

It didn't take him long to find Sam Dudiak, affectionately called "The Dude" for his insistence on wearing only the finest sartorial fashions (typically stolen) no matter the state of his income. For him, it had always been about appearances, talking a big game. In the Army, he'd always been the first to call for an attack, the last to leave the trenches, as if nobody would notice that he never lived up to his bold promises and exclamations.

Dudiak and Sallows had frequented the same soup kitchen, which was now closed, but locals pointed Sallows to the concrete pilings under the bridge, a familiar place for Sallows and, apparently, now Dudiak. Sallows couldn't recognize him at first. Dudiak looked lost and destitute, a different man.

Chapter 21. To a Funeral We Go

That night, McCall himself had a dream. He was running through an endless maze of shelves. The shelves stretched to infinity in all directions, but he somehow felt trapped and kept turned at the breaks in shelves, looking for a variation, a way out of the endless limbo. A light in the distance he followed for a little bit morphed into a wide window. He saw a man standing on the ledge, looking about frantically, wondering whether to jump. He recognized him from somewhere, and then felt a sudden sense of impending doom. Not an atmospheric doom, but a tangible presence, like it was right next to him, and he realized this was what the man was running from. He yelled at him to jump, which he does. As the light took the man, he heard a howling shriek, wind, the man's yell, scared and irate all at once. He himself seemed now to be falling backwards into an encompassing darkness and then jolted awake, realizing his phone was again ringing incessantly. To his relief, sun was streaming into his room, revealing his return to reality and a new day, but damn that phone was annoying. The clock showed 9 AM. Elias's funeral was in two hours.

Chapter 22. An Unnatural History

Why did it choose to be coldest on the days she had to be out and about? Rosellini wondered, as she stepped out of the cab into the bracing chill. The museum's tasteful brownstone entrance was across 77th, bustling with visitors. The museum had recently opened a new branch for school visits, so much of the throng on the street consisted of children. Rosellini waded her way up to the doors, not seeing any sign of Carter.

Inside, Rosellini looked around quickly, assuming he had not yet arrived and wanting to stay as close to the entrance as possible. Several new exhibition halls had just been completed, but were curtained off until the museum had organized the pieces to fill them. Rosellini was not sure how interesting she would find a new Hall of Reptiles and Amphibians and momentarily wished the Ancients of the West fell under the purview of "Natural History." She laughed at her preposterous notion: the great accomplishments of the Egyptians were surely more advanced than anything the hunter-gatherers depicted here would ever achieve. She, like many of her scientific brethren, had come to accept the distinction between man and ape was slight. Only the greatest civilizations had risen above and evolved into something greater.

She felt a presence next to her and turned to see Carter standing there. He seemed smaller than the day before, dressed with less flourish. His eyes had a slightly crazed look, and he seemed filled with a nervous energy. Clutching his overcoat to his chest, he reached for Rosellini. She felt his quavering hand on her elbow, and he asked in a harsh, raspy voice, "Are you ready...for the Grand Exit?"

Chapter 24. Scattered

McCall was disappointed to find nothing from O'Leary when he got home, but he was almost too tired to care. He went to his cupboard to prepare a little nightcap, but was surprised to find his stash had been moved. He heard a clinking behind him and turned to see a woman in a white robe in the corner, preparing a drink. Her movements were slow, her features enshrouded in shadow, her skin luscious. She moved toward him, a drink in hand. Was this for him? McCall smiled. He knew he must be dreaming, but he didn't mind.

But then he felt it: the same presence as the night before, not from the woman, but watching over his shoulder. He wanted to run, really really wanted to run, but instead wrenched himself out of sleep, awakening to find himself drenched in sweat on his couch.

It was nearly morning, and the hints of new light called his attention to an envelope on the floor by his door. Had he missed it the night before, or had it been delivered while he was sleeping? He set the envelope on the counter and got some coffee going. Opening it, he found just two slips of paper, not really the payload he had hoped for. The first was from O'Leary:

"Place was a mess. This was all I could find in the package folder. - O'Leary"

The second was in a scrawled handwriting he presumed to be Elias's.

Chapter 25. The Fragments

Rosellini headed to Columbia, where she met with her former professor, Dr. Arlen Romanchuk. She tried to convince him of the professional import of her work, but it was unnecessary. He was thrilled to see her and accomodate her in any way. She was provided with a well-lit studio space and all the tools she needed to reconstruct the pieces she had without damaging them. She began immediately.

She should have started with the figurines, but went with the shards instead. Even the figurines had bothered her, she needed the process of putting together a puzzle to put her at ease, and the fragments did that. By the end of the day, she felt she had arranged them in roughly the right order. Tomorrow, she'd be able to piece them together into their original form.

The next day, she arrived early, and the urn nearly made itself. But in admiring her handiwork, Rosellini became suspicious. Some of the now apparent hieroglyphs, while "Egyptian," seemed caricatures. In fact, they came from distinctly different periods or no period at all. The hieroglyphs themselves made no sense. The urn was a fraud, and a lazy one at that.

Enraged, she turned her attention to the figurines. Now she knew why they had bothered her. She sniffed and tapped on them: definitely modern materials and kilning technique. She wanted to be absolutely sure, so she brought Romanchuk in during his lunch. He laughed, immediately recognizing the figurines as anything you'd buy from a street vendor in Cairo. How could she have been so foolish?

Before he left, he picked up one of the hieroglyph runes she had not yet studied. His face blanched, and he placed the item back on the table, carefully but swiftly. He urged her to end her work, saying that there was nothing more to see here: surely everything in the package had been fraudulent. He had a class to teach, and they would need the space back the following morning. He hurried off.
