Dokter Ekwilibreum climbs onto a platform and walks to his podium, pounds his cane hard twice against the wooden planks and speaks loudly.


"Ladies and Gentlemen, another fine year here at the Maze of Deth, another year undefeated, though we did have one fellow make a rather fine run of it. I think we can all agree we're glad for Master Grendel's bladed chute.

But you did not come here for my babbling. You came here for blood and prizes. The blood has stopped flowing, for now, so let us dispense prizes, shall we?

The award for Deadliest Challenge is a tie! It shall be split between bulldog93 for his cunning use of rebounding obelisks (Room 4) and Dutys_Fist, for wisely knowing the most dangerous place in the world is between a viking berserker and his beer (Room 5). Each shall receive a sum of 5bag for their contribution.

The prize for Audience Favorite Challenge as determined by audience thumbs of approval goes to Dutys_Fist, once more for the Vikings! And why not? Everyone loves a good ale. Dutys_Fist, here is 10bag to buy yourself a keg of your own!

The award for Most Daring Escape is given to those whose successes we cannot help but stand and cheer for, again as indicated by audience thumbs of approval. In this case, we have another tie. Violet the Undead Girl for surviving the minotaur's door of excruciating death in room 2 and Donald the Dim, for punching that no good obelisk after a slight misunderstanding in room 4. As it has come to my attention that Violet's necromancer is an employee of a subsidiary of Ekwilibreum LLC, he has been disqualified for rewards, and the prize pot will not be split. NebisTS, as Donald the Dim's Next of Kin, could you kindly come collect the 10bag prize?

Of course, this mighty fine shindig is not called the Maze of Success or the Maze of Triumph. No, we're here for blood and the maze gave us that aplenty this year. The award for Best Death goes to... dear heavens, it's a four way tie! Each earning nine audience thumbs, we have Tim, who knew nothing about beer and got what was coming to him; Kadrun, who cared not one whit for veelowsittee, but learned a great deal about it as she accelerated into the pit beneath her; Burnem, Cuttem, and Eatem, three goblins who knew too much about swallowing and not enough about swallows; and Adh the Leprechaun, who quite unluckily revived an old grudge. Again, as Tim was in my employ and owed me money, his family shall not be compensated and shall count themselves lucky I am deducting his winnings from his debts. And as three does not split ten neatly, I declare a prize of 5bag each to our three heroes' next of kin. Jowolf, Shawnsicca, and Wired_Wolf collect your prize!

Of course, some times we love a contestant through no fault of their own. Their successes, while enjoyable were not laudable, and their death, the delightful, was not praiseworthy. These people possess a certain ineffable something. Our award for Audience Favorite Participant goes to Sir Digby the Magnificent with a whopping eleven thumb introduction! As Sir Digby proved less magnificent than we had hoped, could Jowolf kindly come to collect his 10bag award for him?

As an additional prize of my own discretion, I provide 5bag to MonsterMike, one for each member of Mystery Inc, whose demises I quite relish. Thank you for luring them into my maze. This time all your meddling have come to nothing, and I did get away with it! I should also like to give another 5bag to ColdFrog, for helping GOB pull off the only successful vanishing act of his career!

Finally, the grand prize for Longest Run (though not so long as our champion from the last maze) goes to Eggert and Thruggoth, who encountered twenty-one challenges and overcame twenty. We felt like nothing could beat them, and alas, we were right. It was the cold nothingness of space that did them in. Jowolf, come and collect your 50bag bounty, plus an additional 10.50bag in tips from the audience! You make us proud!"

Dokter Ekwilibreum climbs down from the pulpit, enters his carriage and begins to drive off, calling out from the window as he leaves the blood-stained field, "Until next time friends, always remember! Be cunning, be ruthless, be devious and dastardly, and when you can get away with it, cheat!"




Though prizes shall no longer be rewarded, brave souls may still attempt to defeat my diabolical labyrinth by following these posted rules:

Participants who wish to test their Fate in THE MAZE OF DETH!!! will be tested on several traits to prove their worthiness to claim the prize at the end. The traits are as follows:
Might is a champion's physical prowess, his raw phisical power. Might is a determiniation of his ability to fight and lift heavy things.
Coordination is more than dexterity (which refers to primarily hands, FYI). It is the ability to use the whole body to full effect. When the body must move with precision, be it fine motor skills or gross, picking locks or dodging arrows or sneaking past guards, it is a measure of Coordination.
Fortitude is your hero's ability to take a pounding and keep going, to endure impossible harm. It can be represented in her ability to shrug off damage, to overcome oppressive heats or glacial cold, to hold one's breath, or to run for extended periods of time. Heroes with great Fortitude never say die.
Knowledge represents what one knows, obviously. Book smarts, awareness of chemical properties, histories, mathematics, etc. It lets a person know what things are and how they work.
Cunning is the ability to plan, to spot and exploit weaknesses, to perceive threats before they strike, to puzzle out details and riddles.
Persona is a measure of how much a person is able to get their way simply be being who they are. Perhaps one has a great personality, or one is particularly attractive. If one could sell water to a kraken and can stab a man and get him to apologize for bloodying up the blade, one has a potent Persona indeed.
Luck is a measure of how often things go a person's way when they should not. Unlike the other traits, it is reduced each time it is used. No one's luck last's forever.

Now that you have seen what fame and wealth there is to be had, allow me to explain how our little game works:

How to Play:
1) Entering the Maze
- Introduce yourself at the gate so that we may memorialize you when you die. Your introduction should include your name and a bit about you, including your Dokter Ekwilibreum DethTrap, LLC patented Six Trait Metric scores, which will be twelve points divided among your Six Traits+1 (Might, Coordination, Fortitude, Knowledge, Cunning, Persona, and Luck).
- A single user may only send one poor brave soul through the maze per day. Or, to be more precise, you may not send another through on the same day your previous champion is killed.
- The contest ends on Sunday the 18th of August when I wake up (roughly 7:00 am GMT-6).

2) Resolving Challenges:
- Because the geek randomizer won't let you roll more than twice on an item you did not create (and luck may require you to reroll several times), go to the Maze of Deth Roll Thread and create a comment for your character. This will allow you to place all of your rolls on a single comment for easy reference later.
- For each challenge item, click "Add a roll" on the roll thread comment, inputting a roll of “4dF+X” (where X equals the rating of the appropriate trait. Be sure to capitalize the F or it will not work). Under comments copy and paste the roll type (“Knowledge – Easy (1)” for instance). Some challenges allow for a choice of attributes. You must specify in the comments which attribute you will attempt to use when you make the roll. Be sure to include the trait bonus when you roll, as nothing is allowed to be added after you have rolled without Luck.
- Once you have your geekroll, copy that certified geekroll and paste it into your geeklist item comment describing your challenge attempt.
- If your geekroll plus your attribute score are lower than the challenge rating, you die. Describe your gruesome failure and put the word Dead in bold at the end of the geeklist comment.
- If your geekroll plus your attribute score equal or exceed the challenge rating, you overcome the challenge. Describe how you overcame the death trap before you. Then repeat these steps over again at the next challenge.
- You may spend a permanent point of Luck to reroll (made as usual, except add "Luck" to the description) OR to add +2 spent to the roll you already made. You may uses Luck multiple times on the same challenge. Be sure to include in your description how your Luck saved you.
- From time to time, if you are lucky and you make it far enough, you may grow a level in experience. After you have completed that Challenge Chamber, you may add two points to a single trait or one point to two separate traits. You may add points to Luck on a level up if you so choose. This is a permanent stat increase (except for Luck, which will gradually waste away).
- Any time your Traits change, either through a level up or using your luck, or some other reason, be sure to post your new traits at the end of the challenge that changed them.

3) The Audience
- Keep all discussion and audience chatter in the Geeklist Comments section at the bottom, not Item comments of each challenge. Do not post anything to a specific item unless it is your attempt at a challenge. Your only input on a geeklist item, if you are not taking on that challenge, is thumbing and tipping enjoyable victories and defeats.
- Don't forget to thumb and tip your favorite traps and attempts.
- Subscribe to see every attempt, every stellar victory and bloody defeat!
- And when your hero dies, be sure to head on over to the tavern and raise a glass to your fallen friend!

And now for a demonstration, I shall send in a volunteer... the first to attempt the maze.

You stand at the entrance gate to Dokter Ekwilibreum's Maze of Deth, the legendary gauntlet that brave heroes all the world over have come to see. Each year, hundreds test their mind and body against its dangers and horrors. Scything blades, acid, and shambling hordes are undead are par for the course. The corpses pile up, and every year the blood-thirsty audiences wonder, "Is this the year someone finally reaches the treasure horde at the center and proclaims himself King of the Maze?"

Giant brass gates loom before you, Dokter Ekwilibrium's mocking visage sneers at you from the molded relief hanging overhead. This is it. Victory or death lie just beyond the door. There is no third outcome. At either side of the gate stands a heavily armored knight, waiting for the signal, to open the door, to face your worst fears, and the most twisted, lethal threats the realm could devise.

To your left stands a herald with his horn, waiting for you to introduce yourself. Once you give him your name and Six Traits(+1) rankings, he will blow his horn, present you to the teeming masses, and signal the mad Dokter Ekwilibrium's minions to open the gate.

Step forward. Destiny awaits.

The first room is not terribly large. Two iron doors are built into the walls, one to the east, the other to the west. Carved into each door is a bronze bust of a minotaur, each bearing a scowl. Magic emanates from them, and you can feel their eyes following you. Pacing around the room is a large minotaur, the kind you couldn't take even in an unfair fight, and the last of that giant's strength has faded anyway. The living minotaur carries a sizable club adorned with all manner of blades, shards, and spiky bits.

He turns to you, towering over you by several feet at least. The muscles of his arms and chest ripple like a flag in the wind, and steam rises from his nose. Staring you down, he speaks in a rumbling bass that shakes your bones.

"Before you are two doors, each with a mystic guardian. One door leads to excruciating death. The other leads to the next chamber. Only the guardians may open the doors. You may ask of them anything you please, but consider yourself warned. Of the three of us, one of us always tells the truth, one of us always lies, and one of us likes to maim squishy little things that ask silly questions."

A plaque on the wall lets you know this is a Cunning - Moderate (2) challenge. Everyone has heard this one before.

Of course, this minotaur looks serious about bashing anyone who asks questions, silly or otherwise. You can either make the cunning check to figure out a good question on the first try or make a Fortitude - Very Difficult (4) check to take a serious beating while you use process of elimination to find the right thing to ask.

You enter this circular room through a stone archway. The walls are a polished marble. You do not notice any other doors leading out. In the middle of the room is an obsidian obelisk, about fifteen feet tall and five feet in diameter. Engraved in the side of the obelisk is the word PUSH.

Might - Difficult(3)

A note on the floor says that if you don't push it hard enough, the obelisk will reverse itself and squish you. Two drops of blood are on the note.

As the obelisk falls onto the wall, tearing an opening, the sound of liquid splashing against the stone floor can be heard.

Surveying the scene, it would appear that the room the opening leads to is a bar populated by angry Vikings. And, as luck would have it, below the obelisk are broken barrels of beer.

Fortunately, you can spot an unlocked door on the far wall. Unfortunately, between you and that door lie many angry Vikings, many being much bigger and stronger than you. Oh dear!

A sign on the far wall indicates that it will be a Difficult(3) Persona Challenge for them to let you cross. It also instructs you to be thankful most of them are drunk.

The door leads to what at first glance appears to be a bottomless pit encompassing the whole of the room.

Looking more closely, however, you realize that it is merely a very deep pit with a trampoline at the bottom.

You can barely make out the words

"Jump!
Coordination - Medium(2)"


written in white ink on the trampoline.

Looking up, you see a ledge on the South wall, with an arch that surely leads to the next room.

On the ceiling is another inscription: "P.S.: Doors close in 1 minute."

Upon entering this room, you notice the smell of cooked meats. The room is made entirely of wood, as if you were in a farmhouse. There is a large dining table in the middle of room with one large oaken chair placed in front of it. The table appears to be straining under the weight of pounds and pounds of meat products - sausages, hams, steaks. There is no obvious door leaving the room.

On the table in front of the chair is a piece of parchment with the words Eat To Live written on it.

Fortitude - Medium (2)

If the adventurer eats their fill within three minutes, the weight of the meat eaten taken off of the table will allow a trigger to be released, opening an unseen door on the west wall. A small vial will also become visible, the antidote to the poisoned food that you just consumed.

You enter a simple room, ten by ten with nothing in it. On the far wall is a door like most every door in the maze. The only real difference is there is a big blade sticking out from the knob that would probably be easy enough to reach around. A green liquid, conveniently labeled "Poyzun," drips from the blade. There is a sign stuck to the door with dried snot.

As you enter the next room, you fly wildly toward the center of the room, only to be suddenly thrust violently to the side. Gravity seems to randomly change in here. Your body is tossed around the room like a rag doll. Trap doors open along the walls, floor, and ceiling, revealing spikes and whirling blades of all shapes and sizes, guaranteed to eviscerate anything that falls within their grasp. You'll have to anticipate the shifts in gravity and quickly identify the stable pockets if you want to end up at the exit instead of the meat grinders. A sign on the wall confirms what you already know. This is a Cunning - Medium (2) AND Coordination - Medium (2) challenge.

If you succeed, you find your experiences in within have made you more capable and confident in your abilities. You level up. Add two points to your stats, either both to a single Trait or one to two separate traits, and post your newly updated and certified Six Traits(+1) Score.

New Room Feature! If you survive this room, you also take some Nord Bacon with you. You may use it for one free reroll, or if you die without using it, you will instead have your death tipped eight geek gold, enough to buy the Bacon Lover microbadge.

Still feeling disorientated from the thrashing of the gravity room, you stumble along a dank corridor into the next room. Sitting in the middle of the room is a cloaked figure, lying off to one side is a very ancient and not entirely natural scythe.

"Ah, my friend," says the figure as you enter. Feel like a game of chance to postpone the inevitable?

If you choose to accept the offer, you sit down and the figure deals you some arcane cards of a type you are not familiar with. The game clearly isn't one you know how to play and you had better convince the clocked figure to explain the rules quickly and properly. Make a Persona - Easy (1) check to achieve this and then a Knowledge - Difficult (3) to work out how to win the game and keep your soul for the moment.

If you don't accept the offer and try to push past the robed figure, make a Fortitude - Very Difficult (4) check to get through the room before your living soul is sucked from your body.

The room you enter is unbearably hot. Along the walls there are flame throwers that were clearly meant to sizzle you as you entered, but a miscalculation has made the jets fall a little short. There is a safe path down the center leading to a wooden door. The flames won't kill you, but if you linger for more than a moderate amount of time, the heat will certainly knock you unconscious, give you heat stroke, and kill you.

All you have to do is open the door, but it's jammed. The heat has warped the wood, so you'll need to force it. It's a Might - Easy (1) challenge.

In the center of the room is a rod with a tag next to it. The tag tells you that the dungeon continues on the moon, and that you'll need the help of one of these figures to get there. To help you in this task, the rod can reanimate 1 person for 5 minutes. However, after the allotted 5 minutes, the rest of the bodies wake up to feast on your corpse.

It is a Knowledge - medium (2) challenge to find the right person to reanimate, followed by a Persona - easy (1) or a Cunning - medium (2) to convince them to assist you in your endeavor a nearby sign says.

Having chosen wisely and convinced your reanimated helper to aid you, you have escaped from the crypt intact (mostly) and have fled down a hallway. Climbing down a few steps, you turn the corner to find the hallway swarming with chittering black and scarlet scorpions. There appears to be a path of raised platforms across the hall which appear to be free of the swarming arachnids. These footstones are approximately five feet from one another, but only offer a small amount of surface. At the far end of the hallway you see a slick-sided stairway that leads upwards from the ground level, with only a handful of the small creatures moving across them. At the top of this platform sits a table next to a slick metal door. A bowl of some sort rests atop the table. Upon stepping towards the edge of the platform you are presently standing on, you hear a crunch beneath your boot as a sharp pain enters your ankle. Checking under your boot, you find a crushed scorpion and a crumpled note that reads "In case of mishap, drink from crucible to purge". Your ankle is starting to burn from the scorpion's poison, you had best do this quickly.

You may cross the room by leaping from platform to platform and avoiding the teeming mass of scorpions below with a deft set of jumps and a Coordination-Moderate(2) success.

Should you choose to make a run through the teeming mass, or should your Coordination check fail, you must try to live through the myriad of stings as you run towards the opposite end of the hall with a Fortitude-Difficult(3) attempt. You will find your antidote in the crucible on the end platform.

Opening the metal door, you find yourself in a very long corridor with curiously-motifed white walls and another locked metal door at the opposite end. As you step onto the hallway, the ceiling starts to slowly descend, and the metal door behind you swings shut and locks itself. The motifs on the wall start to change, and you notice that the so-called motifs are in fact gears which have recently begun to spin. Many of them carry inscriptions and other clues as to their purpose.

Looking back at the ceiling, you see that it is perfectly flat, but with an exdentation that says Knowledge or Cunning - Medium (2).

You manage to get to the next metal door but when you start to open it you discover that it is trapped with a huge electric potential. To escape the lightning discharge you must succeed at a Coordination - Medium (2) challenge.

The discharged door opens automatically, revealing a large room filled with many contraptions and other robots, most of which are colored white with pear green highlights. A door lies on the opposite end of te room.

A robotic eye descends towards you.

Judging habitat suitability... the robot proudly announces.

If you are male, the robot will announce a Might - Moderate (2) test.

If you are female, the robot will announce a Persona - Moderate (2) test.

Failure on either of these tests results in instant frying.

If you are neither, you'll have to pass a Cunning - Difficult (3) test in order to find a logical fault in the robot's circuit to stop him from frying you instantly.

You enter a hastily constructed room. From the ceiling dangle a number of blades of various shapes and sizes. It seems they've all been lashed to a net, which hangs from the ceiling via loosely tied knots. Also hanging from the Net of Sharp Death is a key, which is tied especially securely. On the far side of the room is a wooden door, not particularly thick or well crafted. Three spikes jut out from it, perhaps a foot and a half apart. There's a lock on the door.

A small wooden plaque haphazardly nailed beside the door has a hastily scrawled note.

Realistically, however, it's maybe a Coordination - Easy (1) tops to avoid the falling blades, or Might - Very Easy (0) to kick the flimsy bit of wood calling itself a door in. They did say anyone could help build the maze.

Passing through the door, you come to a large, bare room, with nothing but a door at the opposite end, and two giant gloves, each the size of a dragon, and each curled into fists.

Test subject [1630+ # of people who have already reached this room] has entered. Testing superweapon "Fists of Duty"

All of a sudden, the gloves rise and start to try to hit you over and over again.

Oh, and this is a Fortitude - Difficult(3) rated weapon. Die, humans!

You'd better run to the door before the fists manage to pulverize you.

You barely make it through the door and slam it behind you before the giant gloves impact the door and wall. Feeling safe for the moment, you look around this large chamber and notice a small fountain in the middle with a sign Drink Me.

As you approach closer, the giant gloves pound the door again and looking back, cracks are forming on the door and the surrounds. Time to run to the next door before the gloves break through the wall. Make a Might - Easy (1) check to force the door and sneak through before the gloves bash their way into this room.

Alternatively, kneel down for a drink at the fountain and gain a +1 on yours next challenge check. Then make a Coordination - Very Difficult (4) check (remember the +1) to dodge the gloves' first crushing attack. Then make a Cunning - Difficult (3) to dodge the gloves while getting to the door and through it. Greed does not pay in this maze.

As you rush through the door, you find yourself outside the lunar dungeon complex and on the lunar surface.

An extremely large rope is tied nearby, a rope which leads back to the earth.

A series of harnesses lie at your feet. Surely there is one your size.

A note on the rope reads Space is airless. Hold your breath and glide down the rope! Fortitude - Difficult (3)

Thankfully, the architect of this room was somewhat generous, and has provided you with a pool of freezing cold water in order to cushion your fall.

You're still dripping from the previous challenge, its icy black waters chilling you to the bone. As you prepare to enter the next room, you notice a sign on the door.


The room builder wrote:
Persona - Insanely Difficult (5)


How odd. Normally, they don't let you know what a room contains until you enter. Confused, you push open the door and...

WHACK!

A blow to the back of your head knocks you down and a burlap sack is hastily thrown over your head. Before you can respond, your hands are bound behind you, and you can hear the hum of a flaming sword swinging through the air around you, accompanied by a scuffling of feet. You hear a voice from the blackness that now surrounds you.

"Ya lookin' to get to the middle o' this death trap, an' get that treasure fer yerself? Well ya won't get outta this room alive 'less ya can give me one good reason why I shouldn't take this sword and slice ya to sizzlin' bits."

You can make a Persona check to talk him into letting you by, or you could try to fight him, bound and blindfolded as you are, by making a Might - Insanely Difficult (5) check.

If you succeed, you are able to leave the room and gain a level. You have two points to add to your traits. You may add one to two separate traits or add two to a single trait.

As you leave the room, you see a warning on the door:

You open the door cautiously and expect the worst. Nothing happens, no big explosion, no huge monster, no fiendish traps. Just nothing. All that is in front of you is a gloomy corridor with a very obvious poisoned spiked pit trap just before a long shady staircase.

You easily skip over the pit only a fool could fall into and start up the stairs cautiously. You eventually spot an old and well worn door at the top. On the door is a note: Coordination - Easy (1). You wonder what for as you reach for the door to push it open. Just before you make contact with the door, however, the staircase collapses and turns into a rather slick and smooth ramp and the door falls unexpectedly towards you giving you a hearty push rearwards. You start sliding back and if you fail the check, you end up battered, broken, spiked, poisoned and very dead in the bottom of the pit. If you make the check you jump onto the door as it resets wondering why someone would put the hinges at the bottom.

You enter a room with five ornate iron doors. Upon each is a bas relief of a different knight from folk tales and epic ballads.

A disembodied voice calls out, "Five knights, five adventures, five deaths. Each one performed great deeds, and each met a specific demise. One was killed fighting the undead. One was poisoned by a spurned lover. One was stabbed in his sleep. One drowned in the seas. One died wealthy, old, and happy in his own bed. Choose the door of the knight whose fate you would share."

You may have heard tale of one or two of them, but have you heard tale of them all? And if you do, can you identify which knight is which? This is a Knowledge - Medium (2) challenge.

Through the door is a high domed room with nothing but a bed on it.There isn't even a door.

Suddenly, you hear a *plink*, and see a gold coin fall by your feet.

you hear another *plink*, and then another, and the pace of coins falling increases.

Looking up, you finally spot the door. It's right at the top of the dome. Be careful not to be buried alive.

Around the dome, a flowing script reads Fortitude or Coordination - medium (2)
