The games take place on the fictional world of Thedas with each game focusing on a different protagonist as they gather a party of companions to face some threat or danger. The games are known for allowing the player to interact with their party through conversations which in turn can directly effect the companion’s approval of the player resulting in a relationship or causing them to leave permanently.
In the World of Dragon Age mages are considered dangerous due to their ability to enter the ‘Fade’ giving demons an opportunity to possess them creating an ‘Abomination’. All mages are therefore forced to live out their lives in the Circle of Magi under the watchful eye of the Templars who destroy any ‘Abominations’ and mages who escape the tower, labeling them as ‘Apostles’ or ‘Blood Mages’.
The Chantry holds considerable power in Thedas, training the Templars who keep a leash on the mages and in turn the Chantry keeps a leash on their Templars by forcing them to take the highly addictive Lyrium.
