The nominees for the 2012 Golden Geek Awards have been chosen by you! The voting is now open via these links:

Board Games
RPG
Video Game

Instructions:

* Select the appropriate category from the buttons at the top of the page.
* Rank the items by clicking on the box and selecting the rank.
* Duplicate rankings are OK if you think the items are equivalent.
* Change a rank to N/A if you have no opinion on an item.
* 1 is Highest - 10 is Lowest

Your votes are recorded immediately and may be changed up until the time voting closes (11:59 PM CST - October 31, 2012).

The final voting will resolved using the Schulze method - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schulze_method

As usual, voting is restricted to either supporting users (having a supporter badge from any year is sufficient) or voters who pay a one-time 20 GeekGold fee, or users who have purchased an avatar.

Note - there was a tie for the last slot on the Strategy category - so there are 11 candidates on that list instead of the usual 10.

Here's the list of nominees!

I'll say this - I do appreciate that "best art" categories appear on all 3 domains. That way, even if I don't know all the games that well myself or don't visit the other sites particularly often, I still feel like I can contribute to the votes being made at this stage.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

RPG: Game of the Year
13th Age

Not available in its final form at all. Exactly how many people will have played the escalation edition? Only 4 people own it. I guess there could be a few games run at cons.

Aldie wrote:

Not available in the shops to buy yet. However many have had access to the 'beta' which isn't the final form. So may deserve its place on the list for best RPG. But only 7 people have said they own the final product - but it also made the list for RPG: Best Artwork & Pres.

Far greater cries of wargamer dismay if D-Day Dice wins that category.

I'm also bemused (but not surprised) that most of the "Abstract games" have themes and randomness/hidden info/etc (thus defying both the usual definitions by both "insiders" (games of no chance and no hidden information and alternating player turns) and "outsiders" (games with no theme) of "abstract game")... As far as I can tell, only two of the candidates are "like Chess or Go".

I think any game that's only released on one platform, and to a niche non-mass-market audience at that, is going to have a hard time matching the votes of more cross-platform titles.

What I find interesting (being primarily not a modern video-gamer) is that indie doesn't preclude titles published by the majors (eg. Bastion). A different definition for the one I am familiar with from the RPG side of the fence.

The problem is that abstract games have such a negative bias on the site and those abstract fans that do exist are such a small segment of the site. So those fewer more knowledgeable votes get drowned out by those who don't play abstracts and don't really like abstracts in the first place.

Wargames have a somewhat similar problem.

While thematic and strategy games have a large enough pool that a popular nomination process makes sense, abstract and wargames would be better served by having a committee of people who actually PLAY those games do the initial nominations.

Yeah, I don't get it. I thought I'd take the bother of nominating this year, to get games that are at least abstract. But looks like I was soundly drowned out.

Kingdom Builder isn't even in the abstract subdomain on BGG, meaning it would take some effort to nominate it explicitly if you made any effort at all to look at abstracts. Of course, if people just took their favorite game and nominated it for all categories they thought it might remotely fit, then it'd be another matter...

I don't think it's people just voting for their favorite game.
It's that, to an Ameritrasher/thematic gamer, Kingdom Builder is abstract.
Even to the average eurogamer/strategy gamer, Kingdom Builder is abstract.
It's just that to the abstract gamer, Kingdom Builder is NOT abstract (although it's got similarities and the gameplay has similar feel to abstract games).
I always use Carcassonne as an analogy, KB is about as abstract as Carc, but it's still not abstract as it has a medieval setting and a lot of the powers and scoring options are tied thematically to their name.

... and for once they would be right as Eclipse is really an economic game.

This from a wargamer who voted for A Few Acres of Snow for wargame of the year

[Edit] now that I've read the rest of the thread I think Risk Legacy would draw the most tears

Anyway, I voted

#1 - No Retreat
#2 - Strike of the Eagle
#3 - Sekigahara
#4 - 1812 - Invasion of Canada
#5 - Virgin Queen

Yeah well, to ATers anything that uses unfamiliar mechanics is abstract. I've seen people claim that Mage Knight is "really" abstract.

Kingdom Builder has no similar feel as abstract games. Of course all games are abstractions, but Kingdom Builder really, really does not feel like chess.

As I said, Kingdom Builder isn't even in the abstract games subdomain. If people thought like you say, I'd expect it to be seen in the subdomain voting also.
