So altough I was wiped of my feet by how the book looks and how the history of Rokugan reads it seemed that I had some problems actually getting through the book. For that reason I downloaded the Legend of the Five Rings 4th edition Quickstart Legacy of Disaster to get in the system more easily.

Legacy of Disaster was realised in 2010 for Free RPG day. The quick start holds the basic rules, a first adventure and some pregenerated characters. All that you need? Let’s take a look.

After a short intro you quickly come to the quickstart rules. These take 6 pages, in the meantime after reading this I got the core book back in my hands and read the rules there and if I compare them I must say that the quickstart rules are very complete there isn’t much in there that’s not in the rules. This gives you a good view of how rules light this game actually is, you can easily put almost all rules on these six pages. However what is missing is all the honor and glory rules and as I understand these are an important aspect for the game. I do miss them here a bit. The rules that are in here are more the basic fighting rules.

The second part of the quickstart then takes on the adventure module: ‘Legacy of Disaster’. It quickly puts the characters in play introducing them as guests of Doji Haruki on a journey towards a party held by Seppun Ayumu. The party is in a couple of days and as important people they are asked to stay the night in the Doji Haruki’s palace on the way. However as they stay in the palace they almost are witness to a theft, some special blades that Doji Haruki got from Seppun Ayumu himself are stolen. Since Doji Haruki had planned to give these to Seppun Ayumu on the event he is faced with deep despair. He shall loose all his honor if he has to admit to him that he has lost his gift. He therefore asks the player characters to help him retrieve the swords. The players then will go after the thief, finding clues and dealing with him and other obstacles on the way.

The adventure itself is nice, it’s not to long and will go quickly for players. It will put the players nicely in the Rokugan society and give them a good feel. The adventure itself is mostly combat orientated but this you also see at the rules that are included in the adventure. I like the different kind of rewards that are offered to the players and they really give you a good feel of the game. I can really relate to them.

Then there are still 11 pages with pregenerated characters, they take the big clans and provide a Bushi (fighter) and a Shugenja (sorcerer) for each. The book then ends with a spell list for the Shugenja.

A little word about the lay out and artwork. It’s just beautifull. I was in love with this part of the game as soon as I opened the core rule book and it’s in this quickstart as well. They really put their work in this.

In general: I like the game and I hope that I will be able to give it a try soon. As a matter of fact I’m actually planning a session for an RPG club soon so I hope everything goes fine and I finally know what the crab is so excited about…

I did not like this adventure as a quick start adventure. I would never run it with players that didn't know L5R. It requires too much knowledge of the setting for it to be a good introduction.
