Hi, looking forward to the adventure. Thanks for all your efforts so far Matt bringing us upto speed.
I have a question about my cleric's spellcasting. I know that he can prepare 3 1st level and 3 orison spells each day with an hour's rest and that he can swap out his 1st level spells and above with a cure spell of the same level spontaneously if desired. What I am unsure of is how many spells he can cast each day? Also, how quickly does time pass in the game? I just want a rough feel of how much I should try to ration spells, or if it is likely we will spend several 'days' on the adventure and there will be opportunities to rest and renew spells fairly regularly.
Edit: I did have one other question. Did you want us to decide upon our alignment when we introduce our characters?

There's some great stuff that's been posted so far; I'll wait until tomorrow evening before moving things on to give everyone the chance to post an intro.
In case people are worried about the length of the posts so far, just a couple of sentences is fine! Whatever people are comfortable with.

What I am unsure of is how many spells he can cast each day? Greenclaw can cast three first level spells per day, i.e. his prepared spells once each. If you want to cast bless twice in a day, you'd have to prepare it in two of your three slots. As you observed, any of these slots can be sacrificed to cast cure light wounds instead. Wizards work the same way (except sacrificing spell slots for cure spells).
Bards have a much shorter spell list; they only know two 1st level spells. Duvenel gets to cast two 1st level spells per day, but she can cast any combination of those two spells she knows during the day. Sorcerers work the same way, but you don't have any of those in your party.
Level 0 spells are different; they aren't used up. So if a character has picked detect magic, he'd be able to cast it as many times as he wanted that day.

It's hard to give concrete advice. There's no hard and fast rule; it depends on how eventful your journey is, plus how quickly you push through areas and encounters. You will all know that the crypt is more than a day's travel away, so there will certainly be chance to replenish spells.

Lawful Good Neutral Good Chaotic Good Lawful Neutral Neutral Chaotic Neutral Lawful Evil Neutral Evil Chaotic Evil
This represents, in a very general sense, the character's outlook on life and morality. There's a better and more in-depth description here. Alternatively, see this image (click to zoom):

Greenclaw is Neutral Good.
Edit: Oh, and for completeness, Greenclaw's bonus language will be Sylvan.

Just a couple of things:
greenclaw wrote: Before the group heads out, Greenclaw takes it upon himself to distribute the backpacks and rations, sharing them evenly amongst the assembled young heroes. There's no need; all of the supplies you've been given are in the backpacks that the mayor handed to each of you individually. Nobody has looked inside their backpack yet, as far as I can see.
greenclaw wrote: Do we need to decide on a full marching order at this stage?
While it's not needed now, the path may well narrow down as the journey goes on, so a marching order for narrow paths/passages is probably a good idea.

Sorry for not posting in the last few days; things have been a bit crazy at home, not helped by a 2-year old that won't sleep! I will post in the IC thread later today, and try to get back on schedule from then on.

If anyone's feeling daunted as to what they can do in a round of combat in Pathfinder, let me know what you want your character to accomplish and I'm happy to turn that into game actions. Bear in mind that a round is 6 seconds of time; that should give you some idea of what's possible. After the first round or two, things should become a lot clearer.
Who has/hasn't used the geek dice roller before?

Hey Matt,
Can you please give us, or at least me, a basic primer on how combat works and how to read our character sheet? I'm sure there's a ton of possible actions; so you don't have to go into all of them, but it would be helpful to get a little bit of a rundown. Of if there's a good resource for beginner-friendly guidance that could be helpful. Thanks.

(Sorry for being incommunicado for a few days; it wasn't planned...
)
I'll copy from the PRD a bit, but these are the combat basics:
During combat, time is split into 6 second rounds, with everyone taking turns to act. The order in which combatants act is determined by an initiative check (d20 + your init. modifier); highest going first, then second highest, etc. This order generally stays the same each round.
There are 4 main types of action: standard, move, full-round, and free. (There are a couple of other types, but they're unlikely to come up)
Standard actions include: a single melee attack, a single ranged attack, casting most spells, drinking a potion. Move actions include: moving up to your character's speed (20ft. or 30 ft.), opening or closing a door, standing up, picking an item up, sheathing a weapon. Full-round actions include: lighting a torch, a 'full attack' (when you have more than one attack in a round). Free actions include dropping an item, speaking.
You can see a full table here.
In each round, your character can do either: - a standard action and a move action - a full-round action - two move actions plus any number of free actions, in any order.
For an attack, you roll a d20 and add your attack bonus. I will then compare it to the AC (armor class) of the enemy and describe if it's a successful attack or not.
Does that help? For this first encounter at least, I'm happy if people just want to give an idea of what they want to attempt to do, and I'll interpret that in terms of game rules.

Thanks, Matt. I'd like to have my badger attack and have my character perform a ranged attack.

Quote: Your sheet has the line: Ranged longbow +3 (1d8, 20/x3) on it. This means you add 3 to your attack rolls with your bow, giving you a result of 9. This is not enough to hit the enemy.
Matt - what's (1d8, 20/x3) mean?

Sorry, I missed that last post...
1d8 means that your bow does 1d8 damage when it hits. 20 means that it threatens a critical hit on an unmodified dice roll of 20 (other weapons might have 19-20, or occasionally 18-20) x3 means that when your weapon does a successful critical hit, it does triple damage, i.e. 3d8.

Daryl992 wrote: Would detect magic or Spellcraft allow me to figure out where the one casting the illusions is? Detect magic will find magical auras, so it will tell you for certain if the orcs are real or not (at the moment, Gil-doriath only has the word of one of his travelling companions that they are not real). It won't find the caster of a spell, unless that caster has other magical effects or magic items on his person.
Detect magic is a fairly complicated spell; it's described here.

Is everyone still on board? I'm conscious that some of the players haven't posted for a little while (not helped by my own sporadic posting over a period of a couple of weeks - apologies for that), and I just want to check if people are waiting for an opportune time to jump in. A quick comment or thumb of this post is fine.
