"Aron, I am called," the old man answered, seeming quite pleased that the group appeared to be in agreement. "It is not far, my new friends. Follow me," he went on, turning to lead the way with another smile, again an improvement upon before.

Valeros turns and mutters to Kyra "I'm beginning to feel this man may not be the crazed murdering hermit we originally sought..."
OOC: Again, I'm not sure if this is important, but Valeros will follow near the head of the group, not far from Aron.

Thinking: My companions are fools for so quickly trusting this old man. I'll need to keep a close watch on him and the path he takes us on.
Alain signals to his horse Donahan to follow. Donahan has been his trusted companion across many campaigns. They had learned to anticipate each other's needs and had developed a language between them that was communicated through looks and expressions. Alain gives Donahan the sign to be cautious and watchful. They both move to the back of the group. Alain mutters to Donahan, "If there's any trouble, we'll let those fools take the brunt of the attack first."

As the group moved forward, the old man chattered on about this and that, pointing out trees or plants he considered special, telling the young'uns, as he called them, where this animal lived or where that animal made its home. His speech rambled on almost as much as his feet did, and finally, about a quarter of an hour later, Aron said, "Almost there! Just another minute or two."

Valeros, feeling considerably more chipper at the prospect of warm food and dry clothes, turns to Feiya, "Cheer up! After 2 days of wandering around lost things are finally starting to go our way."
-
-
Kyra walked to the front of the group, to the halfling Aron. I'm glad you invited us," she said to him. "Some warmth and some food will do wonders to us. But having not seen a living soul for days causes some of us to be suspicious. You as a hermit must appreciate that. But yeah, our few days outside the living world must be peanuts to you, living in solitude for years. Please tell me, why did you choose these forests to live in?" At that moment they walked past small blue flowers that grew on the side of the path. I'd like to learn more about the flowers too! You seem to know a lot of what grows in the forest.

Feiya has a hex just begging to come out... yet, is willing to follow the conversational lead of her companions.
"Yes, old man. I spent most of my youth living in dark spooky woods--against my will. I am curious, why have you made this dark gods forsaken wood your home? Is it penance for all the blood you spilled in your days as a warrior? Or, do you harbor some dark secret? I will be honest, I have little trust for those who lurk in dark places."

Merisiel walked quietly at the back of the group listening to the conversation and pondering the words being spoken. Still feeling unsure about the old man she was beginning to welcome the idea of a warm place and a meal. Tired from the journey she felt like she was beginning to let her guard down and silently warned herself that she couldn't let it down even if the old man did seem more crazy than dangerous.

"Oh my dear new friends," the old hermit began, getting his preaching coat on, "so many wonderful questions to answer. Yes...yes, I have missed such conversation. I came to settle here, you see, because I fell in love with this forest. Not like you young'ens would think, not like with a girlie. I just...I came home. For the first time in my life, I just knew I was home."
The land began to rise in a short, not too steep climb. At the top of the little knoll was a huge tree with thick, strong branches that stretched as wide as two or three full-grown men laid end to end. It was beautiful with lush, healthy leaves and a trunk so massive it had to be absolutely ancient. "There she is. Home. Now tell me that doesn't look like home to you. Perfect. Absolutely perfect..."

Feiya, antsy to unmask this fiend, would like to discern the nature of this "perfect" tree-- Knowledge (nature)+7 and the motive of the halfling-- Sense Motive +2.

OOC: (Out of Character - When we are dealing with an actual mechanic in character, even if I don't have any 'flavor' text to add, it is likely I will reply here so that it can be more easily referred to later if necessary. When I do this, I will use the "OOC:" notation so you all know this is me, Kristin, speaking to you as people playing the game, not me the goddess/GM/storyteller of the game and world your characters are in speaking to them.)

You may post again and in that post roll a d20+7, placing Knowledge: Nature in the little info box and then another d20+2 with Sense Motive in the box. If you haven't done that before or aren't sure how to, let me know. When you post these rolls you will probably want to use the same "OOC:" designation. Any flavor text you want to throw in is absolutely fine (and encouraged) and can be typed as normal.

Feiya, antsy to to unmask this fiend, draws upon her extensive knowledge of the natural world to understand the true nature of this perfect tree:
Knowledge (nature) 1d20+7 = (5) + 7 = 12
After quickly assessing the tree, Feiya calls on all of her instincts to unravel the charade of this halfling hermit: Sense Motive 1d20 = (15) = 15

OOC: It looks like Feiya forgot to add the +2 to the Sense Motive roll. It should be 17.

OCC: I might have. the dice roller keeps the previous roll and when I deleted the +7 I may not have added the +2. Good catch. How do you "see" the roll and its modifiers like that?

OOC: At the bottom of your post window it says "Dice Rolls". I click on the little plus sign and it shows what you entered. There is a 1d20+7 and a 1d20.

Feiya takes the time to stop and study the tree, and she finds nothing whatsoever to give her cause to be suspicious. The tree is beautiful to be sure. It is clearly extremely old with many of its spreading roots slowly being exposed to the surface of the land by the natural courses of the world. The ground, she notices, appears quite porous, meaning that it would be well fed whenever it rained. Perhaps its advantageous location kept it healthier than the other trees in the area, though all of them were also quite majestic in their own right.
The little halfing, however, was more of a conundrum. Feiya thought she detected a hint of either outright deception or at least some kind of holding back on his part, but he did seem completely sincere in his happiness at having guests and showing off his home.
"Well come now, tell me what you think of the beautiful tree, my home. My little hut is in the hollowed area in the base, and it will fit us all so long as don't mind to be just a little bit cozy. Come on everyone," he encouraged with another of those smiles.
Roll One 1d20+13 = (16) + 13 = 29 Roll Two 1d20+3 = (4) + 3 = 7

Feiya makes her way over to Valeros and whispers,
"He should not be trusted, I have a...sense about him. He's holding something back. When the fighting starts, I'll handle the wolf..."
I reach out to Daji through our link and open up what I sense about the halfling.
Stay alert and stay close my friend.

Daji, he has shared numerous times how he does not get visitors, test him my loyal friend. What do you smell?

Ézren drifts to the back of the group and clutches his staff tightly as beads of sweat trickle down his forehead. Dark forests, creepy strangers, wretched wolves... "Not an ideal situation..." he grumbles, "not at all."

Valeros grin fades slightly as the man gestures towards the tree, "That's your, er.. home is it? Inside the tree?"

"Aye" Valeros mutters to Feiya "He seems awful eager to get us in the tree, let me have a peak"
"Well no sense waiting out in the cold I suppose" He says more loudly to the old man. "Where's the door? I don't suppose you have a little something to wash away the travels do you?"
Valeros strides towards the tree and begins looking for the entrance, hoping to poke his head in and see what the interior looks like.
Edit: I might as well add a perception check to see if I notice anything out of place inside the tree: Valeros Perception Check 1d20+0 = (3) + 0 = 3

As the party gets to Aron's home, Alain gestures to Donahan to come closer. He pretends to rub him down while doing a Perception check, looking for anything out of the ordinary and sensing for danger: 1d20 + 4 = (1) + 4 = 5

Kyra nodded and agreed with the group. The tree is absolutely beautiful! You're telling you live inside? You're surely one of a kind, Aron! She gave him a heartily smile, but inside she felt tense about it.

Daji moves his head to the side just a little as his thoughts filter to his master. I smell the trees, healthy and strong. I smell the grass, fresh and sweet. I smell many animals of the forest, safe and...good. I smell man, all of you, so different yet the same.
