OOC stands for "out of character" This is where we'll discuss things that aren't directly part of the game. To start with, I think we need some introductions since I don't know most of you.
My name is Steve and I've been playing RPGs for about 30 years, so yes, I'm old I haven't played very much Pathfinder, but I've played a ton of D&D 3.0 and D&D 3.5, which are a part of the root of the system.
My job is to be the gamemaster. Different people will define that word differently but my definition says that it's my role to help tell a fun story while everyone has a good time. I'm going to try to stick to the rules as written (RAW) because I think that's important any time you play a game for the first time..
What I'd like is for each of you to tell us a little about yourself and what you're hoping to get out of the game. The thing I'd most like to know is if you've played Pathfinder or other RPGs before and if you own any rulebooks. It would also be helpful if you told us when you were most likely to be able to post and if there are times (like weekends) when you won't be around.
I'm able to post most days between about 8am and midnight. I can't always find time before 6pm (work and all) but I can often answer quick questions).
My plan is for us to work together to create characters and then start playing. We'll add rules as we go. I think it works a little better than everyone going off and then coming back with their own character and suddenly everyone is playing a fighter with a longbow.
One more warning, I'm running a second table of this game, so don't get confused!

The rpg games I have played are Warhammer 3rd edition, D&D, and pathfinder beginner box. I could get on about late afternoon and evening.

I'm Cathy, I'm old, and I've never played an RPG. But I've wanted to for a long time. I recently purchased the Pathfinder Beginner Box and a Core Rule book, with the intention of learning the game and trying to convince my game group to play. Well. Good intentions, but I couldn't pull it off - I couldn't convince them to bumble through with me. So here I am.
I'm on the West coast and can get on pretty frequently during most days, including weekends. As I write this, it occurs to me that my life may be somewhat limited. But I digress. Anyway, I'm around between 6:30AM and 10:00PM most days.
I'm really looking forward to this. Thanks for pulling it together!

Robert here, in upstate NY. I've played in a Live Action Role-Playing game every Labor Day weekend for nearly 20 years, using D&D rules (currently 3.5), but have only sat down for a traditional table session once or twice in all that time. I have been wanting to learn more about Pathfinder since I first heard of it a while back. I enjoyed the Play-by-Post format of the MoM adventure, being able to craft a response outside of game time. So here I sit!
I'm on BGG several times throughout the day.

I'm James, a midwestern language arts teacher.
Sigh...my RPG experience is mostly relegated to videogames at this point; however, back in high school, I played a few games of a cyberpunk RPG. Perhaps it was Cyberpunk 2020.
I've also played a few games of D&D. I'm quite certain we did NOT play by the real rules.
When I signed up for this I thought, I'll grab a pathfinder rulebook and just get up to speed...then I found a pathfinder rulebook. It's nearly 600 pages.
Let's hope it has a good index!
edit: I'm at school most of the day, but I can genuinely find a few minutes to post here and there. Otherwise, I can usually post before 7 and after 4pm CST.

I'm Jonathan, from Iowa [yes, lots of corn, soybean and hogs]. I have no RPG experience at all, don't own and haven't read any rulebooks. As a child I had played a few Warhammer campaigns/scenarios which had a gamemaster, but that is about the closest thing. I got more seriously into the boardgame hobby about a year ago, and visit BGG a couple times a day during the week, and at least once over the weekend. What I'd like to learn from this experience is more or less the mechanics of how it works, and whether I could recommend it (or not) to my children someday. Hopefully I'll have some fun along the way, too!

Hi I'm Xander.
I have played a lot of rpg games with my family but never anything like this online. I got Pathfinder beginner box for Christmas and I love it! My best time to get on is evenings and weekends.

Okay, I think that's most everyone.
At this point we're going to start generating characters.
The first step is to roll 4d6 and ignore the lowest one; this will generate a number from 3 (which is really low) to 18, which is really high.
We can use the geek die roller for this. If you haven't used it before it will appear when you reply to this message. It's a button next to font size that says Roll. It can do a lot of things. For right now, we're just going to use it roll 4 six-sided dice and drop the lowest. When you click it, enter 4d6l in the Roll field and then click Add Roll. Do this six times. If you have any trouble let me know.
here's what it looks like when you post it: Roll 1 4d6l = (5 + 6 + 4 + 6) = 17 Roll 2 4d6l = (5 + 1 + 6 + 1) = 12 Roll 3 4d6l = (1 + 3 + 6 + 6) = 15 Roll 4 4d6l = (4 + 6 + 5 + 5) = 16 Roll 5 4d6l = (1 + 6 + 5 + 1) = 12 Roll 6 4d6l = (5 + 2 + 3 + 1) = 10
For right now, we're just making rhe rolls, we aren't assigning them to ability scores yet. The six ability scores are fairly straightforward.
Strength - measures how strong you are, how hard you hit and how much you can lift.
Dexterity - measures how nimble and quick you are.
Constitution - measures how tough you are and how well you resist getting sick.
Intelligence - this is book smarts and quick thinking.
Wisdom - this is your ability to stick to things. A high intelligence tells you to go on a diet. A high Wisdom lets you do it.
Charisma - This measure how strong your personality is and how good looking you are.
If you want to know more about ability scores, there is a link on the Pathfinder SRD: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/basics-ability-scores/ability-scores...
The SRD is "system reference document" It's not as pretty or complete as the whole rulebook, but it does have all the rules.
The other thing to start thinking about is a class. We need to work together a bit on this part because having a good mix will help you in the game. If everyone has the same skills, then there could be important things you're missing. Also, if you're one of 5 fighters in the group, it may be difficult for you to ever do anything that no one else can.
We are only using the Core Classes. If you want to use the Beginner Box, that means Fighter, Cleric, Wizard or Thief. If you use the Core Rules there are a few more. You can also find a list at: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes
Homework: Roll 6 ability scores using the die roller. Each roll is 4d6l
Tell us what kind of class you think you'd like to play. Probably it will stick, but we might have to negotiate a bit if everyone is the same thing or we're missing an important one.

Let's see if we get off to an auspicious start...
Roll 1 4d6l = (4 + 2 + 5 + 4) = 13 Roll 2 4d6l = (3 + 6 + 5 + 2) = 14 Roll 3 4d6l = (5 + 1 + 5 + 6) = 16 Roll 4 4d6l = (6 + 4 + 1 + 6) = 16 Roll 5 4d6l = (6 + 2 + 4 + 6) = 16 Roll 6 4d6l = (4 + 6 + 5 + 2) = 15
I'd like to play a druid or monk. Will play a straight fighter if no one else does.

I'd like to be a Bard.

Steve informed me that I should have rolled 4d6l .. sorry all. Noob here. Re-rolling now:
4d6l = (6 + 2 + 1 + 1) = 9 4d6l = (6 + 4 + 3 + 4) = 14 4d6l = (3 + 3 + 3 + 4) = 10 4d6l = (4 + 3 + 1 + 4) = 11 4d6l = (4 + 5 + 3 + 3) = 12 4d6l = (3 + 1 + 5 + 5) = 13
Edit: My character preference would be a Monk [drunken master] or Fighter/weapons-master.

Hmmmm...nobody wants to be a straight wizard/sorcerer? Is that normal? Honestly, whenever I play Oblivion or Dragon Age I never go toward the spellcasting, either.

I can go sorcerer. Probably should, since I tend to shy away from casters in fantasy games also. Will be more of a learning experience.

Sorry guys. I was unexpectedly called out of town for a family emergency.
I think it will be easier if we share character sheets and I'd rather just do something here than to go to another site or mess with email.
So here's a check on classes: xzander - Rogue knightjam - Cleric jmiscavish - Ranger, Rogue, Paladin Francisthe3rd - Druid, Monk, Fighter griffinritmire - Bard looleypalooley - Monk or Fighter
I think everyone can play their first choice if you'd like. Knowing what the group is, I can adjust some things. Just let me know. A wizard/sorcerer would be useful at this point but isn't mandatory.
From here, you can choose your race. We are using the core races. You can find a list at: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/core-races
As for a character sheet, let's kind of build it as we go. Right now, we want to assign our numbers to the ability scores. Generally you want to put higher numbers in the ones that you want (or need) to be good at. So let's have a sheet that looks like this:
Player Name Character Name:
Strength: Dexterity: Constitution: Intelligence: Wisdom: Charisma:
Race: Racial Abilities:
Class: Class Abilities:
Once you fill out that far, we'll jump into the skills and feats. If you already know about those, you can just skip ahead. If you don't know, but are eager, you can find skills and feats in the Pathfinder SRD:
Skills are things your character is good at like climbing or bluffing. Most skills are things anyone could try and do, but that heroes are often particularly good at. The skills list is here: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills
Feats are extra-ordinary abilities, things that heroes can do that most other people could only dream of. The list is here: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats
There are a lot of feats, so if you aren't sure, just ask.
I promise I won't have another gap like this unannounced.

It doesn't look like Wisdom particularly helps a ranger. I'd put 9 on Wis, 11 on Cha (drops to 9), pump up Strength and Dex. That's my 2 GG.
I'll have mine posted up around dinner time today.

I read this over at the site the GM has been referencing:
time consuming PFRPG site wrote: Wisdom describes a character's willpower, common sense, awareness, and intuition. Wisdom is the most important ability for clerics and druids, and it is also important for monks and rangers. If you want your character to have acute senses, put a high score in Wisdom. Every creature has a Wisdom score. A character with a Wisdom score of 0 is incapable of rational thought and is unconscious
So far as I can tell, my charisma will help me deal with animals. However, the more I read about rangers, I may want to flesh this guy out into a dwarf sniper, so I may want to move that 17 into dexterity...sigh...the CHOICES!
