Ok....noob moment: I have to confess i'm not sure about the flow of all this. I thought Jeff was resolving (which I thought meant other folks set up the scene and then Jeff chooses a die and concludes it). However, it seems that Jeff set up the scene for the most part (which is fine...just not what i was expecting). Shouldn't it be up to Jeff how the scene ends if he's resolving? I've been kind of quiet because I'm not sure when I'm supposed to chime in.

Looking back, I'm seeing Ira suggesting the setup, and then Justin launching in to the scene to put poor Max ( whistle ) on the spot. Jeff just roleplays Max from that point. So I'd say it looks good for scene establishment.

As for the resolution, Jeff has "resolved" by choosing the black die. It's now up to everyone to work the scene to its conclusion, taking that black die into account, so it has to end poorly somehow for Max.

And really, that's it for the rules engagement for the scene. A good establishment, and a (soon to be) good resolution, and that's that. Fiasco can be thought of as a fairly free-form roleplaying experience, with the rules there to provide just enough structure to provide some guidance and to make sure that there's always participation from more than one player.

So, in this scene, here's a good place to chime in. Jeff has asked for it to end poorly for Max. He's already going to have to have cleaning duty tomorrow; but he's looking for Dzul for a little encouragement--after all, this wasn't his doing. One thought would be to further punish him for this somehow (some kind of team sanction, perhaps?). And there doesn't need to be a whole lot more here; I'd think the scene's pretty close to ending.

Thanks for clarifying. I think i've got a better handle on this now.

With a stern, almost cold, expression, Dzul looks down at Max. "You've got what you deserve Max. I'm not bailing you out of this. Furthermore, why not expand your cleaning duties to my office?"

Dzul leans in to Max and lowers his voice, "Max, Something's not right about that little prank. That smell is vaguely familiar and has overtones of dark magic. Do some poking around and get back to me at once!"


Max, turns to exit.

"Oh! Max! Remember, when you get to my office, I like my wands organized by weight!"

That all looks good to me. Can you format that as we've been doing with the story bits, so it's a little more obvious?

As for the suggestion, I'd say you should feel free to just do it. I posted earlier a link to some guidance I wrote up for the other table. Allow me to quote myself here:

That looks like a good place to stop the scene. Jeff, you took a black die for that. In Act One, you give that die to any other player. To whom would you like to donate a black die?

Yeah, Scott - as I read the rules, it sounded like after I pick a die color, that doesn't mean that I narrate the rest of the scene. It's just supposed to be a clue to everyone that we're heading in that direction. I was waiting for Dzul's reaction.

Since it's Act I, I've got to give away my black die. 1 I'll pass it over to Justin. Nice setup on the scene, Ira!

Take a look back at the setup for you:


Jeff

1. Relationship: Around the School : Teammates on the sports team.
2. Need: To get out: of a favor I owe.

Scott

1. Relationship: Work: Fellow teachers who are bitter enemies.
2. Location: Secret Location: The headmaster's office.

We've already explored the sports team aspect (which is not to say we couldn't do it again). There's been just a little hint of the enmity between Dzul and Caractacus, so yeah, a scene between the two of you could be a lot of fun. We haven't yet established what that favor is, or who owes it to whom. That's certainly something to work out during play--maybe here we develop the motive. devil Or maybe a scene where you are dressing down Max for the prank, to establish exactly what the favor is. The location? It *could* apply here. Maybe the headmaster has called the two of you in for some reason?

The other thing to mention is that Ira hasn't been too involved yet, but Dzul doesn't really have a direct connection to Molly, so that might be hard to work into a scene just yet.

The other thing to consider is, what would be the purpose of the scene? Make sure that's in everyone's mind when the scene starts, so that we all know when the scene is ready to end.

Some random thoughts on scenes:

The headmaster might bring Dzul and John in to tell them to keep things civil between them, perhaps for an yet-to-be-revealed incident. Ira could handle the headmaster NPC since it's tough to work Molly into the scene (or maybe it has something to do with Molly?)

Dzul might be heading to the headmaster's office (perhaps he knows about the secret chamber, or perhaps not), but John/Molly is keeping tabs on him. Hilarity ensues when they run into each other.

It might be that Dzul owes a favor to someone else entirely, and wants to use Max to get out of it. The scene could be a meeting between the two of them (perhaps while Max is cleaning Dzul's office?) that is overheard/interrupted by Molly.

I've received news that I'm going to be traveling the coming week (roughly Sat to Thurs). I might have some limited internet access, but it's not clear if there'll be much time for me to be on BGG. To keep things flowing, perhaps I should have a minor role at most in the upcoming scene.

OK...Here it goes. Given Justin's travel situation, I'll again involve Max and Dzul, but also try to include Molly. Let's try to explore what this favor is all about. I'll take a shot at establishing.

It's after dark. Dzul is standing in a dank, gas-lit corridor talking to the Headmaster, Searos Manitee. They are straddling the threshold of the old master's office door. We encounter them mid-conversation. "I can't understand how John was so blind to that type of magic. He invented that kind of magic!" Searos nods his head, "John is hardly our concern here. We need to get to the bottom of th.." Just then the two were interrupted by a noisy calamity down the hall. Dzul rushes out in the direction of the disruption, wand in hand. Behind the closed door to the storage room near the end of the hall, Dzul hears some snickering coupled with some loud Shhhhhs! Molly has a hand muzzling her mouth....It's Max's hand. Dzul flicks his wand and the door obediently swings open. Max and Molly are standing stiff against the wall, pretending not to be noticed. "Over here you two! What are you up to?!!" Max begins to speak. Molly interrupts with a quiet nudge. "Just tell him....you trust him, don't you?"

Molly catches Max's eye and with a wink, slips the severed hand under her robe while the Dzul's attention is on Max.

"Max, cat got your tongue? he just doesn't want to admit it, but we were looking to see if we could find out who pulled that prank that Max got blamed for. Honestly, how dare someone try a prank like that without involving me....But then we overheard you talking....what magic do you mean? Does it have anything to do with that Chamber I've heard rumors about...."

Max stutters at the question from Dzul, but his posture loosens as Molly turns the question back on the professor. He looks at Molly with admiration and newfound respect. "That girl is quick on her feet," he thinks to himself. He turns back to Dzul, his curiosity piqued at the mention of the secret Chamber Molly mentioned.

Dzul ponders the situation. He thinks to himself, "These merry pranksters seem to know something...or are they bluffing?" He considers Molly's role in this (She's quick on her feet) and wonders if now is the time to let Max off the hook with just one more "assignment."

Should we attempt to resolve this now? I'm thinking the flavor of this favor could depend on the color of the die. (i.e. Is this assignment going to help Dzul get out of some trouble or help Dzul prevent trouble.)

If you're at a point where that extra guidance would help, then yes, go ahead and ask for a die.

So, how do we make this a bad scene for Dzul? I think a problem here might be that there is no one to take on the role of Searos Manitee. Max and Molly are both involved, so Ira and Jeff are busy. It's Dzul's scene, so of course Scott is busy. And Justin is traveling for work. Ira or Jeff, do either of you want to do double-duty in this scene? Or does everyone want to wait for Justin to return, so he can be the headmaster here? Or....??

Deep in thought, Dzul hardly knew what hit him. A force stronger than anything he'd felt before came from the end of the corridor. It knocked him off his feet. Molly and Max both duck in to the store room just in time to evade the next blast. Dzul reaches for his wand and threatens the figure standing in front of them, but it was too late. Dzul's left hand began to freeze. The skin morphed from a shimmering tan to deeper and colder shade of gray. The nerves began to tighten. The muscles ached. The hand froze in to a contorted clutch. His skin turned to a dry crackled finish. The hall smelled of sulfur.

The cloaked figure slowly turned and faded in to darkness. Max runs to the winded professor's side, while Molly studies the scene. The sulfur odor wanes. "Max.....ungh.....my hand....I can't use my wand....I can't absolve you of your burden without it. You're going to be forever in my debt until we fix this! I'm sorry! Warn the others! Something dark is upon us! As soon as this is all over, I promise to relinquish this cruel servitude hex."


Feel free to continue this with something about the Headmaster....perhaps he disappeared in to his chamber plotting something...perhaps he WAS the dark figure...perhaps we end it here and flashback later...not sure. Max/Molly may want to interject as well.

I kind of like this as the end of the scene. It's a nice, punchy ending. I'll be curious to see who (or what) this cloaked figure is. So, the scene ended with a black die, which you get to give away. Who is getting it?

It'll be Justin's turn next. While we're waiting for him to return, I'd like to spend just a little time to see how we're doing. Is everyone seeing how this works? Are folks getting comfortable? Are there still some things you all want to ask about?

I'll give my 1 to Ira.

I think I have the feel for this. I've had some AP...and suppose that's normal for a newbie. It's challenging to stay focused on the needs and objects at hand. There's definitely much more story to create than I was expecting. Overall, this is great though!
