Welcome to your first game of Fiasco!
The first order of business it to make sure everyone has the playset. It's available to freely download, so please do so, as it will make the set up go faster and more easily.
A game of Fiasco has five parts: a Setup, Act One, the Tilt, Act Two, and the Aftermath. I'll explain each briefly here, and go into more depth as we get to each one in play.
The Setup uses the playset we chose to create the initial situation. It contains a table of tables -- all d6 driven. The tables will help us choose relationships, needs, objects, and locations between the characters.
Once those are chosen, we'll take some time to mesh it all together, and then get started.
Act One will be the first series of scenes. Each player will get two scenes per act, and you'll have your turn going around the table. You'll want to use your relationships, push for your need, and use your object and/or relationship in your scenes.
After Act One comes the Tilt. We'll choose two items from the Tilt table that will throw some gasoline on the fire that is the game so far.
Once we've identified the Tilt, we'll do Act Two. Again, there'll be two scenes per player. It's very much like Act One, with one small difference we'll cover when we get there.
And finally, the Aftermath. Each player will roll dice against the Aftermath table, and we'll use the result to produce small vignettes that show the final results for the characters.
The Tilt and Aftermath tables aren't freely available, and to protect the publisher's IP, I'm not going to make it freely available. But we'll get through it.
So, we start by seating ourselves around the table. The text suggests that the player who grew up in the town with the smallest population goes first. So, where did you all grow up? And how many folks lived there? (Ballpark numbers are probably OK here. )

And also, who the heck are you? If you could share a couple of sentences about yourself, it'll help us know with whom we're playing. I'll start:
I'm Dave Wilson. I've been on BGG since 2002. I played AD&D and various other RPGs in high school and college, took a 20+ year hiatus from role-playing (though I still played board and card games), and got back involved in 2007 or so. My role-playing renaissance has involved newer games, such as Fiasco, InSpectres, and Primetime Adventures.

Re: RPGGeek Newbie-Friendly Play-by-Forum Initiative thread (yes, a better title will be found).
Hi Dave et al,
Anyway, on to ME, because as any theater person knows, it's all about ME. My high school Game Master's father acted in summer stock & my friend described cast parties as walking into a room full of black holes since everyone demanded all the attention.
I grew up in Parkville, Maryland, a suburb of 30,000, on the outskirts of Baltimore, Maryland, a city of 650,000, in a metropolitan area of over 2 million. (I guess my boardgamer rules side is showing through.)
I participated in RPGs in the 80's, playing Dungeons & Dragons etc. I switched to boardgames in college. Later, I met my husband at one of the early sessions of Games Club of Maryland. Up to now I have mostly used BGG to record my game plays since Jan 2007.
I'm trying this Play by Forum thing because I'd like to access my creative abilities, but feel that I need time to generate good responses, something I always found difficult to do around a real table.

Re: RPGGeek Newbie-Friendly Play-by-Forum Initiative thread (yes, a better title will be found).
Hey all,
I'm Jason Young. I've been on BGG and in the hobby for about a year and a half.
I role-played a little in the late 90's-early 2000's, but haven't had much opportunity since then, and would like to back in the groove.
I grew up througout the western United States, probably the smallest town I lived in was Vacaville, CA, with a population of 90,000ish.
I'm ready for things to go horribly wrong! And to set the stage...Hamlet. There, I said it.

Re: RPGGeek Newbie-Friendly Play-by-Forum Initiative thread (yes, a better title will be found).
Hello, My name is Matt Allen. I have been on the Geek for 5 or 6 years now (where does the time go?). I am an avid boardgamer and I roleplayed quite a bit as a teen (including a couple of years in the SCA, lol!) and young adult.
I have been picking up roleplaying games for a number of years but I am not drawn the the stand-by dungeon crawl type games any longer. I am interested in the newer story-telling games that Fiasco fits into nicely. Jason (see above) pointed it out to me last year and it intrigued me so I picked up the books. We have yet to find a group around here (Glendale, AZ a suburb of Phoenix) so I am excited to try it by forum. This is my first game of any sort played by forum, btw.
I grew up outside of a town called Basin City in Washington State. I think I will win this one. The town had about 300 people in it, one paved street and a blinking yellow light at the only intersection in town. We lived 45-60 minutes from the nearest actual supermarket. Man, I wish we would have had the Geek and Amazon back then!
So now that Jason has doomed us all, on with the show...

(I think you meant MacBeth. Hamlet is set in Denmark, a different islandy-ish country. Ok, I promise I won't post again until everyone else had has a say.)
(P.S. due to cross-post. Not even one red-yellow-green traffic light? As a baby geek, what did you do for fun?)

Well, when we went into the bigger town (the Tri-cities, Pasco, Kennewick and Richland)for groceries, there was a used book store next to the supermarket my mom shopped at. I would bring a big paper grocery sack of fantasy/SF books that I bought last time and trade them in for more. Luckily the owner was into SF/Fantasy and had a great selection. I picked up the original D&D red box (and the others eventually) and the purple Star Frontiers box from a model/pet shop (crazy combo, right!). I mostly played by myself until high school. My high school was fed from 6 or 8 little towns so we had computers and other geeks! Shortly after that I found a combo game/comics shop in Kennewick and the rest is, as they say, history Just goes to show that geek is in the genes and not from the environment!

So it'll be Matt (300), Jamie (30000), and Jason (90000) (Vacaville, eh? I'm about an hour south of there.) Sandy will slot in, and we'll begin the Setup.

Re: RPGGeek Newbie-Friendly Play-by-Forum Initiative thread (yes, a better title will be found).
Hi, I'm Sandy Scanlon. New'ish to BGG.com, would visit occasionally to read up on games, but never made a log in name until my friend Jamie talked me into it for the Mountains of Madness thing (even though 1 of my gaming friends works for BGG - how sad is that?). That was my 1st RPG experience. I grew up on a 250 acre farm where we rented a house from the farmer, on Route 30 between Hanoverton and Lisbon Ohio. Hanoverton is the town my school (which was grades K - 12 in 1 building) was in, it had 1 traffic light. I think it may have been larger than 600 people though. I've been board gaming for about 7-8 years now, and really looking forward to doing this RPG with you guys, should be a lot of fun!

Re: RPGGeek Newbie-Friendly Play-by-Forum Initiative thread (yes, a better title will be found).
Excellent! Welcome to all of you! I'll use that "600" number to seat you all.
Let's get to the setup. Again, imagine each of us around the table. starting at Matt and working clockwise, you can also look at it as a list, with Matt also listed at the end, to close the loop.
Matt
1. Relationship: 2.
Sandy
1. Relationship: 2.
Jamie
1. Relationship: 2.
Jason
1. Relationship: 2.
Matt
I list it this way so we can fill the areas between the players, to set up our fiasco. Between each player there will be one relationship, and one other item, either a need, an object, or a location. With four players, we'll have two needs, one object, and one location. These will come from our playset; if you haven't downloaded it yet, now is the time.
We use four dice per player, so 16 dice, all six-sided. I'll roll them here:
Rolling the setup 16d6 = (3 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 5 + 2 + 6 + 5 + 6 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 5 + 4 + 4 + 4) = 58
And here's what it looks like. Yes, some dice are white, some are black. Right now, color doesn't matter. The number does.

Now, starting with Matt, you'll each choose one die, and apply it to one of the spaces above. Each space can have two dice; one identifies the greater category, and then the other narrows it down. For example, if Matt wanted to help define a relationship, he can look at the Relationship charts (pages 4 and 5), and then choose one of the dice (let's say a 1) and decide that Jamie and Jason are "Family". Next would be Jamie, who could begin to describe another relationship, or could start putting a need, object, or location somewhere, or could choose another die (how 'bout a 6?) to further describe that relationship. Using the "Family" chart, the 6 becomes "Parent and Child". If Jamie did that, he and Jason are Family: Parent and child. When all the dice are chosen, and it's time to put it all together, you all can determine who is the parent, and who is the child.
Basic guidelines:
- On your turn, pick one die and place it.
- You can place it in any of the two spots between any of the players.
- The first die placed in a spot starts to identify that spot.
- The second die placed in a spot completes the spot's definition.
- Each pair of characters must have a relationship.
- There must be two needs.
- Each player should only be connected to one need. If both needs point to one player, then they get too much attention, and the player who has no needs tends to have less fun.
- There'll be one location.
- There'll be one item.
- The last die chosen will be wild. In other words, it can be any number, so Sandy actually has a choice at that time.
So, Matt, let's get the show on the road!

Re: RPGGeek Newbie-Friendly Play-by-Forum Initiative thread (yes, a better title will be found).
I choose one of the "4" dice and assign it to Jason and Jamie as a relationship in the 1st slot to identify them as "Director and functionary (playwright, cast, crew, designer)."

Re: RPGGeek Newbie-Friendly Play-by-Forum Initiative thread (yes, a better title will be found).
OK, hang on a second. You jumped a little too far. No big deal, it's a really common thing to do.
That'd be the first die for that relationship. So you're just choosing which chart to use. Your "4" would identify it as Relationship: Romance . Then a second die would need to finish it up.
In order for Jason and Jamie to be Director and Functionary, the first die chosen would have to be "2", so it'd be Relationship: Work. *Then* a four would make it Relationship: Work: Director and Functionary.
Did I make sense, or just make it more muddy? I'm hoping for sense.
Go ahead and give it another go.

Makes perfect sense! I will choose a "2" for "Relationship: Work" for Jason and Jamie.

Ok, I think I've got this. I choose 3 for friendship between me and Matt.
Did I get that right?

Let's put the other into the Relationship between Jason & me, so that we're actor & inferior actor. That should help make a fun Fiasco.

So...but, I thought, well, I thought you said I was really good?
I'll use that to give Matt and Sandy a Need to get more Revenge.

I am going to use one of the 4s to add the "need to get famous" for Jason and Jamie.

Well, it seems to me that Jason needs a relationship. We have a couple of 1's left, so let's give him one of those. Do I have to assign with whom?

So, it looks like I get to choose Object or Location for Sandy or Jason. I'll go with Object for Sandy, so that Jason gets to pick which Valuable has a catastrophe.
