The INTRO
Whoever you were before the new life was forced upon you it is now forgotten. The memory of those days, even the harshest memories, are nothing compared to the new life. The life of the adventurer.
You have left your previous, and in some cases secure, occupation to find fortune and so you met somewhere in your travels united by a grumbling belly more than the little success that you have achieved in the last few months. The threat to your very lives is not a rusty dagger in the back, in some dark alley, but it is the ever approaching winter. If by winter you don't find a way to survive, you'll die of starvation, sickness, or frostbite. It is autumn now. The leafs are falling faster than your dying hope.
So you tried to find some jobs but none were paid properly or were too risky to just try. You had to move from small towns to larger ones, but still nothing. The ever present Guilds bar you from having a legit job, so you had to move on... so large towns became cities.
You arrive in the late afternoon in a new city, your last hope. You sit down on the ground to count the red blisters under your feet, and to discover new holes in your shoes. Where are you? Some of you cannot read, so you ask a passer-by, "Bögenhafen!", he shouts loud while he moves on.
The small city seems jolly enough. Four hanged wrongdoers sway slightly in the breeze. Good. There is order, there is law. You may feel slightly safe.
When you enter the lowliest tavern in the city, The Drunken Oaf, you find it full of shady figures playing cards, drinking rancid rotgut, and glaring at you, measuring the weight of your pockets and the opportunity of robbing you of your last brass. Some look away uninterested. You know why. There is no point in stripping the desperate, they have nothing worth the effort.
You sit while an enormous man, grey of hair and of beard, comes to you asking what do you want. You ask for ale, he comes with rotgut, take it or leave it. You drink and it is like pouring burning sand on cracked teeth. You swallow and for a moment you feel a little warmer. You swallow again, passing the lurid bottle around, the tension of the days past seems to ease a little and a moment later it is empty. You look at each other, but you see grim faces... no coin. So you squeeze the last drop trying not to show it even if you know that it is too well evident. It is to your great surprise that a slim man comes to you. He smiles meekly, but his hands shake while he brings you a bottle of Southland Brandy from the bar. Heaven in bottled form, they say. You motion him to sit. He sits and bends forward. You do the same. Now that he's near you can see his eyelids traced with black and red for lack of sleep. "If I get up from this table," he wispers, "I'm a dead man. You're my last hope..."
You may choose now, or later. If you choose now you can play, otherwise you will not interact.
You have between 9 characters to choose from. Choose wisely, death comes easy and cheap.
Adelbert Hartwig, male, human, fallen noble, now a compulsive gambler, full of debts and tormented by his creditors.
Fimbur Grotekson, dwarf, a drunken troll-slayer that wants only to die.
Wetha Holt, female, human, Agitator with lethal political enemies.
Leopold Wiene, male, human, a cunning smuggler with contacts and no coin.
Heinz Brustellin, male, human, a corrupt ex-bailiff, a bully fast to threaten the weak for a couple of coins.
Albrecht Gschwendtner, male, human, an ex-wizard apprentice, hunted by the Inquisition, and haunted with dark dreams and knowledge.
Alane, female, elf, a petty thug with a f***ng longbow, a sociopath and deranged individual.
Granta Bellybutton Appleback, female, halfling, a Barber-Surgeon that trims hair and stitches bodies alike.
Leopold Ensslin, male, human, an ex-Sigmar Initiate who has lost his faith.
Make your choice or wait and see and choose later.
Send me through PM your emails so I can send you the pdf of your character sheet.

Some hard and dirty rules for this game.
You use the Italics when you want to narrate something in the game. Example: "Ludwig looked in the deep darkness. Red eyes from it, looked back..."
When your character speaks, you use bold: "Who's there?", his voice echoed in the alley.
For out of character communication, just use normal text.
There are also some things I could put in the body of the text:
If I place [SEQ] at the start and end of the body of a message, it is a SEQUENCE, that is a cutscene for your benefit but that the Characters know nothing about.
Please don't God Mode, that is, in your posts don't make other PCs or NPCs talk or do stuff. I can do that. I can tell you that your character is happy, angry, frightened or whatever. Please act on my input. I'll do that only and exclusively in the interest of the story.
Don't be self-referential, that is, if something is happening to your character, someone is speaking to him, hurting him, or whatever, please make sure that the character welcomes whatever happens. In the interest of the story. Wouldn't you be frustrated if your character tried to intimidate an other, and the other simply ignored you? You may always re-interpret what is coming to you from the environment but try to do so in the interest of the story, so that it may go on and be significant to your character.
If you have any advise I'll be happy to add it here!

Off we go! I'll play the ex-apprentice.
I've just sent you a GM with my email address, Piero.
One quick question: I've read about the IC and OOC threads. Are we going to use those, or we'll deal everything in this one?

Fimbur takes a huge sip of the brandy, burps and wipes his beard with the back of his hand. "If death is on your trail, you came to the right dwarf", Fimbur gently pats his war axe and burps again "but you should make sure, that a few more bottles reach this table, before we go to business".

if it is ok with you, I'll do everything with this one. But then, it's my first PbF, so if you have a good argument in favour of it, you'll convince me.

Lets wait a moment before starting, so that everyone had a chance to write on the thread.

That would've been my next question - so i assume, that i am on stand-by until Bruno and Michael replied unless you directly interact with Fimbur? Is this assumption correct?

Nope... I just want that Michael writes here, so I make sure everyone's in.

As for the conversation, the first one arrives, the best he is served. Since PbF my last for months, I'm looking for ways to speed up the game. I hope all of you can reply once ore twice a day (WE excluded), if you can - or you can do more - I'll be happy. I will be able to reply most of the day, but I'll reply 5-7 times a day tops, so lets make these posts significant.

It seems that using the OOC thread helps keeping things more organized, thus contributing for a better flow of the game. The game thread does not get polluted by doubts and comments of the players (rules, uncertainties, "can I do that?" questions), that can focus solely on immersing on the role-playing experience and interpretation of the events without getting confused by metha-topics. I'm not sure if this is a good argument, though. =)
On the other hand, resolving everything in here, IMO, has the advantage of keeping things less fussy as players won't have to keep switching between threads.
But either resolving everything here or creating the OOC are fine by me. I think in the end it comes to a simple matter of organization and both will work fine.

I kind of like the idea of everything in one thread. Just less jumping back and forth that way.
I will take Leopold Ensslin.

The man moved uneasy on his chair. His clothes too large for the body inside told you a story you know all too well.
"My name", he started, "is Steffen... what I want you to do for me, is to go and talk to a man that's here in Bögenhafen, I don't know where, and tell him to leave me in peace. If you don't, or you don't "convince" him properly he... will... kill me."

"Does he have a reason to kill you?" Fimbur asks before taking another sip of the bottle. "And even if I would decide to help you, how and where could i find that man?"

The look on the man's eyes hardens.
"I didn't think people like you would be the types to ask questions...", he blurts, "But I may be mistaken, sorry... sorry to have bothered you.", and starts to stand up to move away.

A bottle of Brandy seems too little of a payment for a task like this one... Not that I’m not willing to help you Steffen, but it would be nice to know what I can get in return for saving your life, answers the ex-apprentice a bit harshly. Otherwise, I fail to see a reason why I should not leave you behind and go deal with business of mine, complements Albrecht while scanning the surroundings.

Lets see if Michael has something to say. If he does, you all make me a Fel(lowship) test. If you have Charm, add +10% to the roll.
For who is not practical of the game or roller, go up to the right corner of the message tools and click on "Roll", and throw a d100.
1d100 = (44) = 44

"Don't misunderstand me, Steffen" Fimbur replies, "i'm more than happy to risk my skin for you, but as Albrecht stated," Fimbur nods in the direction of Albrecht "a bottle of brandy is too little of a payment for a 'job' without questions."

At the words of the dwarf he stopped.
Then Leopold put a hand on his arm, and he shivered violently, snapping out of his grip like an eel. Leopold felt cold sweat on his hand.
A great silence fell on the tavern.
Steffan became aware of that, and sat again. The tavern became again busy like nothing had happened.
"I have gold to pay you, enough for you to go on for a couple of months,", said the man glaring at Albrecht, "and I truly don't know where he is,", speaking to Fimbur, "otherwise I would have told you. But I know his name, and I won't lie to you... he is a dangerous man..."

haha, you have actually to roll less in this game.
Who had Charm had a +10% on the skill (I said roll, but I meant Skill, sorry for that), making the roll likelier.

So… Just to see if I got this straight. Successful rolls here are usually by getting the lowest result (like the classic Ad&D ACs tests)? Guys, you hit the jackpot by having me on the party. =D
“Tell us the name of the man then, Steffen, so that we can go and find him. But I cannot help being curious if, in order not to get killed, you’ll just sit and wait there for the whole time until we find him.”, responds Albrecht putting a sarcastic smile in his lips while articulating those last words.

Oh yeah, my roll was terrible, I need to add the 10 to my skill, so I rolled a 73. I can roll a d100 -10 I guess

It has been too long since I have played

"So, I gather that you accept this job...", said Steffan, "the name is Thaddeus Eppledorfer, I know only that. I can't give you more help than that since I've been in this city for a week now, and never got out of the Oaf!"
