Had this scrawled on a notepad for a while and since I am starting up a new game of CoC (after a long absence) I thought I would see what people thought before implementing it.

Basically this adds an extra stat, called Mental Fortitude (for want of a better name), that gives some 'mental armour' to seasoned investigators.

For every X points Maximum Sanity drops below a PC's SAN stat they gain Y point(s) of Mental Fortitude (MF). This represents familiarity with the Mythos and gives a small temporary buffer against sanity loss early in a game. The more Mythos Knowledge they have the more shocks they can withstand before it begins to damage their Current Sanity.

When a PC suffers sanity loss it first reduces their MF score (if any), any excess is applied to Current Sanity as normal. Once their MF is reduced to zero all sanity losses are applied directly to Current Sanity as normal. MF does not apply to sanity losses from things such as Mythos Tomes.

MF naturally recovers as per the rules for 'Getting Used To The Awfulness' (p.71 CoC rulebook, ed 5.5) OR 1 point per day of 'mental rest' free from Mythos related stress

At this point I am a little unsure as to suitable values for X and Y; though I am thinking about X=5 and Y=2.

Thoughts anyone?
