it's been almost 20 years since I last played D&D
I was thinking of buying it again to play with my boardgame group it's not the intention to start playing this on a regular basis, just a couple of times a year
should I buy this starter kit - or is there a better way to dive in again ?

I asked a similar question a couple of months ago

So do you still have your old stuff? If so why not use that?

If you are doing a one-shot twice a year, I would think about just downloading free rpgs such as Dungeonslayers, Stars Without Numbers, or MiniSix.
If you want something physical, I recommend Savage Worlds. The explorer's edition is very cheap and the website offers a ton of free materials for personal use.

Wizards "Try D&D" page. The D&D Quickstart Rules are not very tutorial-friendly, but come with pregenerated characters. So you won't need the Rules Compendium or Players Handbooks for your first game!

Otherwise there are free clones of the older editions you're familiar with: Lamentations of the Flame Princess Old School Reference and Index Compilation (OSRIC) Labyrinth Lord

Pathfinder is a really good game, what games did you play in the past?

Sadly I have to say no. If this box was actually compatable with the rest of 4e D&D then maybe, but it's not (well actually there are some files you can download to fix that, but you shouldn't have to 'patch' your starter set.
If getting into 4e, your best bet is actually buying the Rules Compendium, and one of the Heroes Of books. You will also need some monsters, so either The Monster Vault or even the DM Kit will give you a starter adventure.

Like I said, it's been 15 - 20 years but what I can remember - I played D&D, Call of Cthulhu, Gurps, Paranoia, Shadowrun and Schimmen&Schaduwen (a Dutch rpg)
The last years I played a lot of boardgames but now I was thinking of introducing my boardgame buddies to rpg - since they've never played that before

And what do you think they would like? My personal favorite is CoC and as I understand it rather is the same system (except if you played 1st edition) and easy to learn.
Our group is also having fun with Pathfinder so that would also be a good starting point.
Haven't played any of the new D&D 4the edition so can't tell anything about it, but if you played AD&D you can still find those books on ebay.

As I wrote in recent review, it's a dead end product worth maybe 2 night's worth of entertainment. The PF box is a much better value.
