APPEARANCE The overweight, but not quite fat, individual in front of you looks as if he’s definitely seen better days. His cheap old suit tells the story of a man who not only doesn’t care what he looks like, but couldn’t afford to dress much better even if he did care. His shirt is wrinkled and his tie hangs loosened from his neck. The suit jacket is worn but not yet worn through. His unshaven face is topped with short cut, uncombed hair. His face shows evidence of a hard life, and looks to almost never hold a smile.
Despite the disheveled and run down appearance of the man in front of you, there is a quality about him that gives you pause. It’s the eyes. That’s it, you notice those eyes. No, they aren’t beautiful or full of life. They are somewhat the opposite. They speak of a man who is intelligent but devoid of feeling. They are the eyes of a dangerous animal. They hide a deep level of spite for the world in general. This is not a man you want to be on the wrong side of.
BACKGROUND Jack McGinnis is your typical hard-drinking, Irish, cop. Except for the fact that he does not drink, is not Irish and he isn’t a police officer. The only thing Irish about Jack is his last name, which he got from his adoptive parents, and his stubborn determination to complete anything he sets his mind to. Where Jack’s inhuman determination comes from in unknown. Maybe his real parents were both stubborn people. As for his last name, it is the only thing his adoptive parents left him after they passed away 10 years ago.
Despite what many head shrinks might think about Jack, Jack didn’t have a traumatic childhood. His real parents died before he was old enough to understand or remember it. As a baby, he was quickly chosen for adoption and his adoptive parents where caring and good parents. Jack just never seemed to share the same emotions others did. He wasn’t cruel or heartless, Jack just saw no reason to let emotions interfere with reason. As such, he just never found any reason to become vested in other people emotionally. Jack had joined the military and used the money to attend college. He graduated and was looking to discover himself. The problem was that Jack just didn’t know why he should do so. His emotional detachment meant he was not motivated to care enough about anything to become passionate about it. So after trying out a few different jobs, he finally found success as an insurance adjuster.
His emotional detachment meant his decisions where generally in the insurance company’s favor despite the fact that he was most often working for the claimant. At age 30, Jack’s life completely changed. He was approached by an insurance company to investigate a possible insurance fraud case. What Jack didn’t know at the time, was that Mob Boss Vincent Pastigliano was trying to bilk the insurance company out of millions.
Jack’s investigation led him to meet Mr. Pastigliano’s wife Gloria. It was Gloria that changed Jack’s life. For the first time in his life Jack actually felt strong emotions for someone. Gloria and Jack had an affair and Jack knew they were in love. True love. Jack would do anything for Gloria. But as it turns out, Jack isn’t a fairy tale kind of guy. Gloria had been using Jack in order to steal the insurance settlement from Mr. Pastigliano. Her betrayal destroyed Jack’s heart. But even after, Jack still loved Gloria. When Mr. Pastigliano discovered the affair and Gloria’s attempt to rob him, he threatened to kill Gloria if Jack’s investigation didn’t find in favor of Vincent. Jack played along and Vincent got paid. But Mr. Pastigliano didn’t hold up his end of the bargain. He shot Gloria in the head in front of Jack. Jack’s last memory of Gloria was her eyes pleading with him to save her.
Jack was severely beaten and dumped in the river for dead. How he managed to survive can only be attributed to his determination. When Jack recovered, he never went back to insurance. Instead he obtained a Private Investigator’s license and started his own practice. In his free time Jack investigated Vincent Pastigliano and was determined to eventually bring the man down. Jack doesn’t just want to kill Vincent, he wants to crush the man. Destroy everything the man has worked for and ruin him completely. Unfortunately, Vincent is a careful and dangerous man. So far Jack has had little success...

Name: Floyd Oakes
Age: 59 Height: 6' Weight: 175lbs.
Agility: 8 Smarts: 8 Spirit: 8 Strength: 4 Vigor: 4
Skills Healing: d8 Fighting: d8 Guts: d8 Throwing: d8 Stealth: d8 Repair: d8 Shooting: d8 1 point left over.
Weird Edge: Healer = +2 to healing rolls
Hindrance (Major): Elderly = Pace -1, Strength and Vigor -1 die type (Min d4), +5 smarts skills
Hindrance: Pacifist (Minor): Your hero absolutely despises violence. Minor pacifism means he only fights when given no other choice, and never allows the killing of prisoners or other defenseless victims.
Hindrance: Cautious (Minor): Character is overly careful.
Appearance: At age 59, Floyd does not look to be in horrible shape. Other than being a bit slower these days his health is like most of his peers, not declining, but slow to recover. His white hair is cut closer to his head, never quite shaking the grooming he received in Vietnam. He wears grey working slacks and wears a white t-shirt under his matching grey button up. He has always preferred the uniformed look.
Background: In 1970 Floyd was sent to Vietnam, he was trained as a medic. The horrors of war took there toll on Floyd, no to some extreme insanity, but it caused a yearning in him to remove violence from his life. He believed there was plenty of bloodshed in the world without him. When he returned home he tried his hand at many things, never quite excelling at any one thing. He moved from hobby to hobby, learning a bit here and then a bit there. Schooling was never something he was fond of, but he loved to learn.
More recently, he has been working as a delivery van driver for a manufacturing plant near the outskirts of the city.

OK, sorry but I have my first question. I'm new and using Savage Worlds: Test Drive V6!.
As I understand it, the train did 12 damage vs Jack's 5 Toughness. That means the train has a +7 getting through which is a (hit+1"raise") meaning Jack is about to take 1 "wound".
If I choose to I can spend 1 Bennie to have Jack make a 1d6 Vigor roll to try and "Soak" up the wound. If Jack gets 4+ on his roll then he avoids the wound and is not "shaken".
Is this a correct estimation?
-
-
Yes, its just like an attack that hit and then moved straight to the damage phase.
the +7 getting threw is a hit + a raise which is 1 wound and shaken for jack.
You can choose to spend 1 bennie to make a soak roll. If you get a 4+ you negate the wound and the shaken.
So basically, you got it right.

Ok, before I try to narrate my character's death
, I need to understand shaken and wounded. Shaken would be if the trains 12 beat my toughness, but seeing as the train did in fact roll a 12 (Beautiful) and Oakes' toughness is only 4, that is shaken plus 2 raises...
So, I take two wounds correct? And I roll nothing, because I am not using a benny to soak a wound, right?
-
-
Its up to you if you want to use a bennie or not but bascially yes you would take 2 wounds + shaken. (if the damage hits your toughness you are shaken and you then take a wound for every raise (+4 ) over your toughness the damage goes.).

Is it assumed we are no longer Shaken, or do we still have to roll for that?

Ok, how do we roll with exploding dice? Should I just roll like Jack, the 1d6rr thing?

All you have to do is add "rr" to the end of any die that is exploding.
So if your skill is a d8 you can type in "1d8rr" to the die roller. If there is a modifier "+something" or minus. Place the die roll in parenthesis and then type out the modifier. "(1d8rr)-1". I then make notes in the "Comment (optional) line to detail the roll. This also works with multiple dice if needed. "3d8rr" would reroll any of the three dice that came up "8" as a result.
"rr" is the code function to make a particular die recursive, (exploding), in the geek randomizer.

I got some bad news, My job has decided to cut back my hours, which might make you think more time for gaming?
No, it means I have to go get a second job (or at least try to get a better first job).
I'm, sure you noticed the delay recently. Just seems like I'm running out of hours of the day. I'm going to have to call quits on you guys and this game.
Sorry about that.
Best of luck to everyone
