I have owned WFRP 3rd for over a year now and have read or at least browsed the material multiple times. But only now, preparing for my first game, I realised, that this edition is very vague on the timeline.
Basically I get the feeling, that FFG is taking a similiar approach to the timeline as Hogshead Publishing did, and avoid all contended areas between classic WFRP- and current WFB-histoy. They don't even seem to set a year, in which the game is set. There seems to be no reference to the Storm of Chaos, on which the 2nd Edition was set. Am I missing something? In which direction are you guys leaning? Is Karl-Franz a moron or a hero in your games?

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

v3's setting is before the Storm of Chaos.
And Karl-Franz is a hero! What else? Or at least, the people think so ...

FFG is a little bit vague about the timing of their setting, what Ron said are the facts. For our next Episode in our Podcast i have in mind to investigate all clues out of the new books again and will try to give you an answer.
Perhaps Heroes Call the next expansion has some mor clues to in what time we play.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I didn't know, that 3rd Edition is oficially set before the Storm of Chaos.
@Zwobot: Looking forward to that episode.

It is indeed vague. However .. I guess you can create the time it's played in .. I mean isn't that the basics for roleplaying?

It is, and it isn't.
The Warhammer universe is very extensive and well-documented, but patchy in some areas and superceeded in others.
Although any GM (or game group) is free to decide when their story is set, the existance of large amounts of well-known background material complicates matters because certain assumptions have to be made.
Equipment and spell lists is a primary example. Some equipment simply doesn't (didn't?) exist before the Storm of Chaos events. In recent years the Imperial College have come out with all manner of fanciful gadgets like mechanical horses and clockwork pigeons. These are canon items according to the new Warhammer Fantasy Empire Army Book, but perhaps not elsewhere.
Chracters' backgrounds are affected by this, from the smallest details (Alison's apprentice character has a long scar down her face from defending her fallen master while on an expedition to Albion) to the larger (is Bernie's character allowed to take Knowledge: Albion? Does Albion even exist?)
If you're a fan of the Warhammer universe playing the RPG, you want to be able to use your knowledge of the fluff as much as possible, placing your character in the middle of a world that you already know well.
