I have fallen into 5-6 books for Warhammer Roleply 2nd edition, and would like to start playing. I don't have the core rulebook. Is it okay to buy the 3rd edition book, or do I need to buy the 2nd edition to be able to use the books I already have? Thanks!

Compatible is always a relative term, but I think you'd be much happier picking up the older rules.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

I have to disagree here
The rules are not compatible. 3rd is a complete different game. I have no idea what books you bought, but basically you can use all the fluff and bend the rules sections to 3rd ed without much effort. WFRP is especially rich in background, and most of the 2nd books are full with that.

The background/fluff is similar, though not exactly the same in some areas.
The rules themselves are completely and utterly different, with NOTHING in common.

Not compatible. As mentioned before the rules are very different. But they might be useful.
The city sourcebooks (e.g. Ashes of Middenheim, Terror in Talabheim) will be useful for the information. And the adventures might give you ideas for your own or can be converted. Night's Dark Masters and Children of the Horned Rat have some good information as well. Other books like Realms of Sorcery will not be as useful, though the fluff is still good.
So it depends on the book.

Yeah, I have Terror in Talabheim, Sigmar's Heirs, Ashes of Middenheim, Karak Azgal, Realms of Sorcery, and Tome of Salvation.

I would pick up the 2e rulebook which has a short adventure that leads right into your ashes of Middenheim book. I took a group through that whole series recently and it was a lot of fun.

Thanks! I just might do that. (If I can find one at a reasonable price)

There is always the possibility to pick it up on DriveThruRPG, if you do not mind electronic versions of your rulebook.

No, the rules are not compatable, but the fluff is 99.45% the same.
I have been paying for the new game, and I honestly can't say that it's that great of an improvement over 2e. It just costs a lot of money and is more modern-looking and has more modern-components.
Make no mistake though: They are completely different games.
