I don't understand how do I add story points, at all...

What is a chapter’s story point? Where is this explained in the rules? When I start writing the first chapter what number do I add to the beginning ephemera threshold of 12? Is it the number of the chapter?
My second question is, why should a player want to write an ephemera chapter? Because while reading the rules I got the immression that is something that a player should want but I can't understand the motivation behind it.
It feels like a great game by the way

Generally a chapter adds story points based on which lead was selected from the previous chapter.
So if the previous chapter has the following leads...
Quote: +2 Runaway Carriage +3 Someone In Shadows +5 A Visit From the Constable
And you chose "Someone in the Shadows", as the lead for your chapter, your chapter would add 3 story points to the count.

It is assumed you want to write as much of the story as you can, you "get your own way" then, and can push the story in directions you want, or indeed make your chosen character look even cooler. I Believe it to be a self motivated thing.

I think your right, and can't wait to actually play. I just need to find a victim!
I do think the game could do with a "Story Book/Chart" or some-such on which you can track everything, writing in the chapter headings, point values etc, something to give in organisation. When I'm feeling better I have a go at making one in Excel.

Re: Questions about Story Points and Ephemera Chapters
Thanks F H !
So the first chapter is 0 plus 12, right?
edit: Can a player use any of her goods or bads to trigger or avoid triggering the EPILOGUE?

How about directly in a Google Doc Text file that groups players could open > Save a Copy... of when they're going to start a game?

The Story Point counter starts a zero (pg5).
The Ephemera threshold starts at 12. (pg5).
When the story point counter reaches/passes the Ephemera threshold one of the players gets to write the Ephemera chapter, and then establishes the next Ephemera Threshold.
I don't believe you can change Epilogue trigger with Goods/Bads as the last paragraph on page 11 specifically says they can "ONLY" be used to trigger an Ephemera chapter.

That's a better idea!

Thanks! I just figured that's going to be the target document for lots of games anyway... though it would also work fine for a printed copy.
Also: Either first or last page could comprise a cheat sheet (with pg#s for full rules)

Re: Questions about Story Points and Ephemera Chapters
The playtest I had was done in a shared google doc, which works great. Especially with the side notation feature that the newer format of google docs use. At the top of the doc, we kept the ephemera chapter list (colorizing chapter titles out as we went) and a small bible of characters that appeared as we went.
The epilogue chapter should be considered like an ephemera chapter. You can use your goods and bads to cross it/avoid crossing it.

Re: Questions about Story Points and Ephemera Chapters
That's really to you. However, it probably works best when they don't spend a lot of time physically together. The occasional incidental meet up here and there seems to work just fine.
There's no reason they can't start out as total strangers, or a known friends.

Re: Questions about Story Points and Ephemera Chapters
Another Question!
Is it possible a chapter that is written later to have an earlier date?
For example my first chapter dates 28 October 1941, can the second player write a chapter that dates before that?
Thanks!

There is no reason why you can have a flashback chapter.
I would be careful using them as regular character chapters...as they could become a crutch to using thread titles that you are having trouble with.
Using them with Ephemera chapters are probably okay.
