I never played 4E and I do want to give it all a try, but buying the core books looks a bit to much. Does one get a good feel of 4E with this Starter Set?

Personally, I'd suggest Rules Compendium, Dungeons & Dragons Essentials: Monster Vault, and one of either Player Essentials: Heroes of the Fallen Lands or Player Essentials: Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms; except that is a lot.
You can still download the original launch module for 4E: H1: Keep on the Shadowfell from the WotC site. www.wizards.com/dnd/files/h1.pdf
This probably remains the best way to get to know the system. The adventure itself isn't that good, but then again, they never achieved greatness in adventures. Likewise, the math of the game, and resulting complexity, options and pacing were subsequently improved a bit. But, if this grabs you it is worth the further investment. If it doesn't, the later updates won't change your mind.

It's not great, no, but it does give a feel for the game if you haven't played it. And it contains cards, tokens, and maps to use in the game. The tokens and maps are nice to have.
If you want, I can send you a starter box. Well, it would be without the box - that way I can send it cheaply in an envelope. But you could then use it and get a feel for the way the game works without having to use the outdated downloadable adventure mentioned above.

Do a search for pregenerated characters, such as the Encounters first level ones. I know some players love to wallow in chargen, but these characters will save you quite a bit of time so you can start playing.
EDIT: Wizards "Try D&D" page. The D&D Quickstart Rules are not very tutorial-friendly, but come with pregenerated characters. So you won't need the Rules Compendium or Players Handbooks for your first game!

EDIT EDIT: Interesting suggestion if the Quick Start doesn't make sense: "I would suggest listening to the first run of Penny Arcade D&D podcasts - not necessarily to hear the math (because they get it wrong). but just to hear a DM narrating combat and explaining to a new player how the game fits together."

My armor is contempt. My shield is disgust. My sword is hatred. In the Emperor's name, let none survive.
When I now saw this Coppelius, the frightful and terrific thought took possession of my soul, that indeed no one but he could be the Sandman.

The Starter Set, IMHO, is garbage. It's incompatible with the core system, filled with typos and errors, and doesn't really work unless you're playing by yourself since the only way you can make a character is to play through the solo adventure. It's also really restrictive in what you can do. I wouldn't waste the money on it. If you're really curious about 4E I'll sell you my Essential books cheap...
