This game is high on my to-play list. It does seem like a great convention choice, and I can well imagine playing it at Go Play (just didn't get a chance this year).
One thing I didn't really "get" after an initial reading was how the game is wrapped up. After all the cool relationship building in the first part of the game, the montage just seemed like the game would end with a bit of a whimper. But, I probably need to read it again more carefully, and try it out.
The concept, production value and free playsets just make this a really appealing package to me.

Hi Dan, it probably reads weird and abrupt, but two acts followed immediately by the Aftermath works great in play. You've told the tale; the Aftermath serves as denouement and lets you take a 10,000 foot view of the characters, with some additional surprises to color their ultimate fates, based on scene outcome choices made throughout the game.
Sometimes just knowing what the future holds is enough - I've skipped the montage without doing any harm if that felt right, but usually it is just the right amount of detail to wrap up a session.

One aspect not yet talked about is designing your own playsets. For a GM like me a with too-seldom meeting gaming group, playset-making can be a vent for some creative energy. It's also a prime way to tailor the Fiasco experience to the taste of your own gaming group. You could even create a playset into a (homebrew or published) campaign world of an ongoing long-term game and feed the session into he events of the game...

on that subject, what is the official stance on people designing their own playsets? It seems to be encouraged, but are there templates available or anything like that?

I don't know of any official templates but the playset contest a while back had some resources available for getting the look right. Also, the Fiasco Companion has some excellent advice on how to construct a balanced and fun playset.

The template I started with is here at RPG Geek
http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/61636/fiasco-playset-templ...
It is not official (provided by Bully Pulpit), but jmstar can probably comment on how close it is to the spirit of the game...
After some playtesting, I found out that instead of multiple pages, printing the entire playset on a single A3-size sheet (4 columns: relationships, needs, locations, objects) seems to be easier to work with at the table. You can even put the tilt and aftermath tables on the reverse side and manage with one (albeit large) piece of paper.

BPG wants you to make and share free playsets. If you want general feedback, feel free to email us your first draft. If you want an InDesign template, we can also provide that (write us and ask for it). The resources already mentioned in the prior posts are also very good.
Please send us a copy of your finished work, or throw us a link so we can check it out and, if we like it, publicize it or ask your permission to make it a Playset of the Month.

From my experience, a Fiasco session plays out like a truly collaborative storytelling event. Each person at every game I've played has been fully involved even in scenes their characters weren't in. The connections between the characters are the strongest part of the mechanic, in my opinion, because they give you a reason to be invested in the decisions others are making.
This is how I have described it. This is a game for people who like story and character and are not afraid to nudge both of those. I suspect a softer tilt and gentler playsets would appeal more to my group and make me feel more comfortable pulling it out at conventions.
I was intrigued by Fiasco because of the idea of defining charcters based on thier relationship to each other - a weak point for a lot of traditional games. I would love to work some of these ideas into a traditional game as fodder for character driven side stories. For example: Characters x and y are connected by " Your father's sword". Are the characters brothers searching for the sword? Has one of them along the way acquired the sword of the other's father who was lost in battle several years ago? It would be interesting to let players work some of that material out and add some intra party dynamics to the game
I have a half completed playset that I have not been able to finish filling out. Maybe I should mail it to you Jason and see if it has any potential..

I got to chime in on this as well.
I'm fairly new to the roleplaying part of the hobby. I've been playing boardgames for almsot three years now and always been toying with the idea of hosting a roleplaying group. A couple months ago, I started to GM games of Savage World and my group enjoyed it. When we talked about what we enjoyed, it boiled down to the interacting storytelling aspect. Often we deliberately did not play by any rules just to have a fun storytelling experience. A few weeks ago I got the Fiasco Rulebook as a gift from a friend. When I read the rulebook (with clean, crisp and evocative artwork) I finally found what I was looking for. A rather short play-time, interactive storytelling, versatility and ease of access/play that does not take anything from the actual gameplay. My group loved playing Fiasco and is eager to delve into more stories and having fun with the game together.
I believe the absence of a whole bunch of stats and fiddly rules make this a great roleplaying experience for firsttime gamers/roleplayers,if they don't mind becoming creative in a particular type of way.
That's my praise from Germany. Happy Gaming to all and to all a good night,
Shaun

yes, that's what I meant by a template - something to help with the physical layout and look, as I've noticed that most of the playsets available have a uniform look. Cool to know that it is available.

Hi Jason! Thanks for hosting this.
First off, I have to tell you that the only time I have been able to play Fiasco F2F (I don't get a lot of F2F RPing done in general, anymore) ranks in my top 5 gaming experiences of all time. And I've been playing for 20 years.
It even made one of my more wooden and robotic players come out of his shell and actually roleplay rather than devise the most efficient move every turn. And now he's carried that into our monthly game. One session of Fiasco made him a better role player! I can't thank you enough.
Now, my question is in regards to the Fiasco Mobile App. I'd be interested in seeing more of the playsets of the month on there. Is that something that Bully Pulpit has to approve, or the actual writer of the set? Or is it more Tim just needs to do the programming to add them?
It's super convenient for me and would definitely allow me to get some more Fiasco in my life.
Thanks!

Thanks Matt, it means a lot to me to hear stories like yours. I'm so glad Fiasco has been a really positive experience for your gaming group.
Currently it is still a matter of tracking people down and asking if they want their playset included in the mobile app individually, so it takes time (and some might say no, as is their right). Conversion is also a little time-consuming. I'd tell Tim Rodriguez what you want! It's in his best interest to provide.

I have to say I was really pleased with the interior of the physical book. The art is great and it surprised me that it's in color. For whatever reason I assumed it would be in black and white. Really nice quality for a a little book. I'm 100% satisfied.
Looking forward to the physical playset compilation if it ever gets made

I realize that RPGGeek is only a portion of your audience, but if Jason is looking for an assessment of how popular a compilation of playsets might be, I would also buy it. What I'd be particularly interested in is a mix of Playsets of the Month, fan favorites and maybe even a couple new ones that aren't available online.

Well the topic seems to be working, more books got sold. But it's hard to get to the books over here. I had to walk through almost all the rpg specific sellers at Essen last weekend and even then I had the idea that a lot of them hadn't even heard about the game.
This summer I was at the Orcs nest in London and hoped to buy it there and when I told them the name there wasn't really any reaction. But they did have an expansion to the roach though.
