Present: Olaf, Devlin, Walt and Mary
Note: this was one great session that I really enjoyed. Bits in italic are things that happened or my own thoughts throughout the game.
The next day Olaf and Mary head over to the next murder case, it seems the oldest son of Alexander Pierce has been murdered. He has been dissected by the murderer and his intestines are draped on the floor in a big V. Devlin is in the hospital and already on the better hand but he will need to stay there at least for another day and will need to calm down after he is released. The police have taken inquiries and left already, Devlin tells his friends what has happened. Olaf goes over to the house of Alexander Pierce and breaks in. He doesn’t have any problem to do this since someone already did. He searches the library which looks partially ransacked and finds a book missing from the collection: the testament of Carmagos.
He also hires a couple of workmen in to make a temporally bridge towards the central pillar of Bishop’s Bridge. This will be ready the next day so they can safely go inspect this.
Walt in the meantime has gone home and started reading in the book he got from Retribution Phillips, it turns out to be a copy of Thaumaturgical Prodigies and is a mythos book. The group does some extra investigation but can’t really find a out a lot. That night they contact the police and watch both the houses of the living descendants. They fail a spot roll as Bishop arrives at the house of Phillips, but he sees them and parts away quickly. That night nothing else happens.
The next day they start searching for the house where Bishop once lived. Walt can successfully find this and gives this information to the others. He is also searching for a house that was part of an accomplice of Bishop: Russel. But he has some more work on this one. In the morning Olaf and Mary head over to the bridge. There is now a gangway to the central pillar and a small sand bank on which it stands. It seems that in the central pillar is a shape of a man, it has been pressed into the cement. They find also parts of mentioned sigil that stood on the outside of the bridge. But cannot get all of it, possibly parts have fallen into the water and need to be dived for.
In the afternoon Olaf and Mary head over to the old Bishop house, they find it hidden at the back of some other houses and it looks long time deserted. They enter the house and have a look around, it seems someone has been living here quite recently. The occupant they believe must be Bishop but there is no trace of him now. They decide to stake out the house inside. Mary hides under the stairs, Olaf in the living room beside it. As they wait not much is happening. In the meantime Walt is finishing his investigations about the house of this Russel chap and also has looked at some old pictures of the bridge, he can copy the sigil that was on the bridge and has it now on paper.
After two hours of waiting in the Bishop house Olaf suddenly hears a noise from behind him, it sounds like a door opening. He quickly remembers that there is no other door leading out of the room except the one he has been watching the whole time. As he turns around he looks straight in the face of Atwater who has just opened a secret panel in the wall. As Atwater (well Bishop in Atwaters body) looks back at him Olaf starts a spell and vanishes. To bad Mary her listen checks fail and soon she sees Atwater quickly walking out of the living room and to the other side. The man then walks back and upstairs, she is lucky since every time he passes her her hide roll succeeds, as soon as she hears the man walking around upstairs she makes a run for the door. Bishop is aware of this and casts a shrivelling, Mary manages to escape the house but a bit further she falls to the ground in the middle of the street, her body has blackened spots. By passers call an ambulance and she is taken to St. Mary’s.
Olaf has used his Vanishing spell and is now standing next to the box in his cabin in the woods. He starts to walk back to the house of Bishop. When he arrives it almost evening and two police officers stand there interrogating the neighbourhood about what has happened that afternoon. Olaf is already know by the police because his earlier help and he tells them what has happened, without mentioning the vanishing spell though and learns what has happened to Mary. He tells them to follow him in as they head for the house. With an fire axe he opens the secret door and reveals a staircase. The officers decide to call for backup but Olaf can talk them into going down. As they follow it they find a crumpled letter at the bottom of the stairs and are in luck as an ancient trap doesn’t work. They follow a small corridor and find a laboratory. Here lies a letter to Bishop from his accomplice Russel. Russel tells him he has taken care of the evidence since Bishop hasn’t gotten home. He hears that the farmers may have gotten him and he will be next. He now goes away and hopes that Bishop will still contact him. The room is almost empty but there is a book on the old table: The Testament of Carmagos. There is another door, it looks like a cell door. As Olaf opens it he sees a body of a man lying on the ground, from his body sprouts a second body. The first one appears dead, the second one doesn’t. The second creature appears to be eating the corpse of the first one. As he looks up he sees Olaf and starts wailing. Sanity checks are made but Olaf keeps his cool and finishes the live of the creature with a clean shot.
As they move through the tunnels they arrive at a cave, the find some empty cases there and see a lake. They already heard of a tunnel that leads to the Miskatonic and believe this is what they see on the other side a the lake. A small boat lays here at the shore. There is another tunnel leading away from here. As they move through it it appears to be going to another house. As they enter it and search it it appears that the inhabitants are killed and their bodies dumped in their bedroom. This will turn out, thanks to Walt’s research to be the old Russel house. The inhabitants where spooked by Bishop entering through a secret door and then killing them. It is already night at the moment. And both Mary and Devlin are released from the hospital. The police secures the tunnels and both houses but Olaf smuggles the Testament of Carmagos out of the house. The meet up in the bookstore and take a look at the book. It turns out to be in Greek and some pages at the back are sealed.
The next morning Mary gets a phone call. Retribution Phillips has been murdered. He has been skinned alive while under hypnosis. A large number VI has been carved in the front door. The group decides to help the police and sail over the lake into the corridor behind it. Mary, Olaf and Walt go in one boat, three police officers go in a second boat. The cross the lake and into the corridor. A bit further there is more land and they can go ashore. It’s rather dark in the cages and they move along. Bishop notices them and a shrivelling hits Olaf. A short fight starts with the police and the group shooting at him. Walt takes cover with Mary. The police and Olaf can put Bishop down but just as he falls they hear him calling ‘Tstlee-ee.” The man drops dead. As they examine his body, Olaf shoots another round in his head, just to be certain and they all receive first aid. What they don’t know is that Bishop has called forth a sleeping Shoggoth beneath the water which suddenly rises out and hangs in the air. Sanity checks are called for.
(I now will let you know what happened at the table itself since I find it rather amusing)
Olaf and Walt pass the roll, Mary fails. As I pull out a D6 I ask the players if I roll in the open, they all agree and as I roll a 6 they all start laughing at Mary’s player about how she will go insane again. I then point out to Olaf and Walt that it’s actually there sanity loss and ask for Mary to roll a d20. Luckily for her it’s also six, but she will go permantly insane as well. But it did stop both of the others laughing. Devlin however, being safe and sound laughed like hell.
All characters freeze in terror, Walt even lies on the ground as they see the Shoggoth throw himself on the first policemen and devouring it. The creature then goes back in the water and the Shoggoth swims towards the old exit. Destroying it, starting a tidal wave and disappearing into the world leaving a couple of other victims. The players still loose some more sanity.
I wasn’t planning to kill any of the characters since most where rather new to the game and I wanted them to have some fun playing the characters. But I didn’t count on one thing.
As they are clearing up in the river and the underground cave Devlin is sitting safe and sound in his house. Since he had nothing else to do he decided to read through the Testament of Carmagos. He used a lower Latin roll and managed to read through the book. He gains Cthulhu Mythos points and learns more about the seal and something of a deal with the Treader of the Dust. However as he finished the book he notices that suddenly he has aged 10 years and he looses a constitution, next to that the whole room seems to have aged 10 years and is full off spider webs and dust. The flowers have dried up. He has learned that it’s a very bad thing to call the Treader of the Dust but there can be made a deal for immortality. This however comes at a price. Devlin after reading the book decides to call forth the Treader of the Dust to ask him to undo the contract with Bishop. He breaks the seal of the book and reads the ‘Forbidden Words’. The Treader comes forth as a mummy in a unnatural light, the treader then asks for what he is called. Devlin asks to stop the contract with Bishop but since Bishop isn’t there the Treader doesn’t do this and moves towards Devlin. Devlin is touched, tries to dogde but cannot escape. As the Treader touches him Devlin feels all his life running out of him, his body growing older and older, turning into a skeleton and then to dust. The Treader leaves taking the copy of the Testament of Carmagos and only leaving a pile off dust on the floor where Devlin once stood.

My armor is contempt. My shield is disgust. My sword is hatred. In the Emperor's name, let none survive.
When I now saw this Coppelius, the frightful and terrific thought took possession of my soul, that indeed no one but he could be the Sandman.

Sounds like a great scenario. Thanks for sharing.

Really a great one, especially in the beginning when they are still working out what to do and each night someone dies. Then it becomes clear that it's a race against the clock.

This was one of the best sessions we had so far. A real horror feeling surrounding it.
