The Foolish Daymio - PbF
Story: The winter had been cold, but the drinking had been good. Winter court at Yasuki Yashiki had been most fortunate, and many deals had been struck. For Mifune, Ohai and Katsuro the winter had been particularly good, they had become friends, and even better, the three of them had also become friendly with the powerful Daimyo of the Yasuki family, Daimyo Yasuki Jinn-Kuen.
On a particular cold night the trio had been drinking an especially exquisite sake given to them by Jinn-kuen, when they made a pledge to each other. To honour Jinn-Kuen, and his hospitality, they would spend the welcome spring in search of a gift worthy for him. Each, with their own ability, would find a gift worthy of this great Daimyo. They could allow themselves this frivolity, they reckoned, because Jinn-Kuen's court had been good to them, making their dealings far more successful than expected.
As the story begins, the three friends are travelling down the coast out off Earthquake Fish Bay, following the Crane coast. Soon they would come to a village that would sidetrack them from their quest for a gift for Jinn-Kuen.

Re: The Foolish Daimyo - L5R PbF
I'm happy to play another clan if someone wants to play Crab.
Flesh:
It is a time of peace in the Empire, thus Samurai are free enough to indulge in travelling with their friends. Having spent many hours enjoying the fresh air and fine sake of Earthquake Fish Bay, a friendly contest was suggested; let us travel the coast together, each Samurai using the skills, resources and techniques at their disposal to find the most highly prized item they could and present it to the friendly Daimyo of this court as a thanks for the time spent in peace and reflection here. The challenge? We would be stopping at every tea house and sake stand we came to, sampling the fine wares of the Crane clan. Together, we set off, all smiles and eagerness. Little did we know what lay in wait for us...
Does that about cover it, Karl?

Re: The Foolish Daimyo - L5R PbF
Yo!
That does sound good. The tea houses of the Crane are without peer in all Rokugan!
I thought I might play a Crab Clan samurai in the role of a courtier assigned to one of the courts of the Crane: playing down to that level comes easy to one of my refinement.
Plus, with me playing a Crab it gives Jaime the chance to really stretch himself by playing a character from one of the other, more genteel and honourable, clans.
Cheers Yasuki Mifune, Crab Clan Courtier
EDIT: oh, this wiki is a decent resource for the setting.

Re: The Foolish Daimyo - L5R PbF
I'd like to play a Scorpion. I'll go for Crane if Scorpion is going to be difficult to fit in.
I've got the 2nd edition core books. Let me know what differences there are between that and the chargen we'll use here.
Thanks!

Re: The Foolish Daimyo - L5R PbF
I don't know what character creation in 2nd edition is like. Perhaps Jamie can answer that question.
Step 2: Pick your family.
Each clan has four families associated with them. Instead of me writing a lot about each, I recommend you use the wiki Pete mentioned.
Crab Hida: +1 strength Hiruma: +1 Agility Kaiu; +1 Intelligence Kuni: +1 Intelligence
Scorpion Bayushi: +1 agility Shosuro: +1 Awarness Soshi: +1 intelligence Yogo: +1 willpower
Step 3: Pick school Each clan has three school. One school for Bushi (fighting), one for Shugenja (magic), and one for Courtiers.
Some of the schools are connected to a family, but it seems to me that one can pick any school regardless of what family one belongs to.
Crab Hida Bushi School (+1 stamina) Kuni Shugenja School (+1 Willpower) Yasuki courtier school (+1 perception)
Scorpion Bayushi Bushi school (+1 intelligence) Soshi Shugenja School (+1 awarness) Bayushi Courtier School (+1 awarness)

The differences are pretty big. Don't count on those books here...
I'll post a character after we see what everyone else is playing... We're waiting on someone, right?

Re: The Foolish Daimyo - L5R PbF
No. We are three players and one GM, and we'll remain so, unless someone wants to invite someone. Hopefully it will make the game shorter and more effective

Re: The Foolish Daimyo - L5R PbF
You character is divided into rings, traits and skills. Rings can't be increased by themselves (except the void one). They are always rated the same as the lowest of their two associated traits.
Step 4: Spend experience
You can increase a trait. that costs 4 times the lever you are increasing to.
You can increase the void ring, hat costs 6 times the lever you are increasing to.
You can increase a skill. hat costs the same as the level you are increasing to.
You can buy advanages and disadvantages
No skill or trait can be higher than 4
You all have 2 trait increased already. The other traits and rings are:
Earth Stamina Willpower Water Strength Perception Air Reflexes Awarness Fire Agility intelligence Void
You also have 7 skills that all begin with one point.
Soshi Katsuro: Courtier, defense, etiquette, iaijutsu (dueling), Kenjutsu (sword), sincerity, any one.
Hida Mifune: Commerce, Courtier, defense, etiquette, intimidation, sincerity, any one merchant skill
Kitsune Ohai: Commerce, courtier, defense, etiquette, intimidation, sincerity, any one merchant and lore skill
Please note that some skills are macro-skills. That means that when you buy them, you have to narrow down exactly what you are good at. Perform might be sining, and so on.
Skill list High skills Acting Artisan [macro] calligraphy Courtier Divination Etiquette Games [macro] Investigation Lore [macro] Medicine Meditation Perform [macro] Sincerity Spellcraft Tea Cermony Bugei skills Athletics Battle Defense Horsemanship Hunting Iaijutsu (dueling Jiujutsu (unarmed) Chain weapons Heavy weapons Kenjutsu (katana) Knives Kyujutsu (bow) Ninjutsu (assassin weapons) Polearms Spears Staves War fan Merchant skills Animal handling Commerce Craft [macro] Engineering Sailing Low skills Forgery Intimidation Sleight of Hand Stealth Temptation
There are also advantages and disadvantages, but they are many. I say you can all start discussing your backgroun, and me and Jamie can recommend those we feel fit.

Re: The Foolish Daimyo - L5R PbF
"The Clan", intoned Yoritomo Yashinko, "needs you. You carry the sacred honour of representing The Mantis to the Empire. They must know the deeds of our heroes, the strength of our navies, the blah blah blah..."
Ohai couldn't help but watch Yashinko's lips move. They were a pale pink colour, like the cherry blossoms that littered the gardens of the castle in which he was being trained, along with fourty other young courtiers. He studied the contrast between her pale skin and her dark hair, silky and shining in the sunlight, the subtle green highlights matching her elegant silk kimono. He continued to drink in the woman's body, eyes tracing the curves and valleys of her sensual form. Yashinko was aging, but had lost none of the beauty that made her a woman.
Unfortunately, he continued to study her long after thirty-nine other courtiers had been dismissed and wandered out of the room. Yashinko came up to him, took him by the chin and smiled.
"You are not a good listener, Ohai, but I think you have potential. Skills I can develop, potential to explore. I am going to teach you what a woman wants and how to provide her with it."
She led him to her private chambers. The irony that his education was beginning just as his fellows were dismissed was lost on him over the next few hours...
***
The next months passed quickly. Under Yashinko's guidance, Ohai bedded half of the young women in his class. He studied the skills he was taught in his classes not to further the clan, but because they would help him in this new mission his sensei had provided him with. He would best a rival with his wit, then make it up to her in private later.
Soon, the class began to take on minor assignments. Ohai watched his peers go out to deal with diplomacy and negotiation, while Yashinko had him placed first on a sailing vessel, then as an 'observer' at a Phoenix duelling school. Through her contacts, he was put into correspondance with several prominent and beautiful women from all over the Empire. He sent them poetry and they sent other poetry back. He studied and improved upon his poems before sending them to another budding beauty.
After four years, he had not only grown as a man, but as a courtier. He was now an instrument of seduction, a roguish charmer built to serve the Mantis - for as Shinsei once said, "There are no secrets between naked souls".
Yashinko had made one error, however; Ohai didn't care about the Mantis. Like the great Mantis heroes he had studied as a boy, this athletic, handsome womaniser saw the rest of the Empire only as a tool to achieve greater successes. He had no sense of duty, only of desire and the challenge of finding his next lover...

Moves Like Water Buffalo
Haha,
I love it Jaime. Below you'll find the rather prosaic description that I whipped up for my character earlier this morning before heading out to work. When I come back to the 'Geek to post it, I find that Jaime's only gone and created a character that is similar to what I had in mind but better: duels of poetry in the court of the foolish Daimyo, here we come!
Oh, how many experience points do we have to spend? I think I have spent 36 so far, but I haven't picked any Advantages or Disadvantages yet.
Hida Mifune
Family: Hida (+1 Strength) School: Yasuki (+1 Perception)
Earth 2 Stamina 2 Willpower 2 Water 3 Strength 3 Perception 3 Air 2 Reflexes 2 Awareness 2 Fire 2 Agility 2 Intelligence 3 (12) Void 2
Skills
Artisan: Poetry 3 (6) Awa Commerce: 1 Int Courtier: 2 (2) Awa Defense: 1 Ref Etiquette: 2 (2) Awa Intimidation: 2 (2) Awa Sincerity: 1 Awa Engineering: 1 Int (Kaiu Uncle) Perform: Singing 2 (3) Horsemanship: 2 (3) Athletics: 3 (6) Str
Advantages
(Please choose for me, or suggest just a few for me to pick from.)
Disadvantages
(Please choose for me, or suggest just a few for me to pick from.)
Background
Hida Mifune is a burly, barrel-chested fellow who stands just 5'6" high in his clogs. (Think Brian Blessed without the gonzo comedy overtones.)
This Crab courtier favours richly patterned heavy silks for his dress, sports a marvellous black moustache in the style of Hida Yakamo of old, and his deep-set small eyes are surrounded by an explosion of deep laughter creases. This samurai has only three fingers on his left hand, a legacy of one terrible winter that he endured on the Kaiu Walls, the memory of which still plagues him with nightmares! (Hida Mifune did terrible - terrible! - things that bring a secret shame to his face when he recalls them in the dark hours of the early morning.)
His passion for exotic vittles, heady drink, quick-witted ladies, and composing poetry naturally suggested Hida Mifune's secondment as a courtier to the courts of the Crane. It also helped that Hida Mifune was - and continues to be - a canny negotiator possessed of an easy charm and a booming laugh that disarms all in his presence. Slow to anger, Hida Mifune is also stubborn as a water buffalo (!) when the honour of his family, friends, or Clan is tested.
Hida Mifune currently harbours a passion for a married Kakita lady of the court (just tossing stuff in here, we don't need to pursue that avenue), has discovered a love of sailing the stormy high seas thanks to many days and nights carousing and negotiating on the great Mantis ship of his good friends - and courtly rivals! - Kitsune Ohai and Soshi Katsuro.
(I might amend this description a bit after reading Brian's and Jaime's descriptions, the better to tie Hida Mifune to their characters.)

For a while I was thinking we'd make Pete and Brian's characters female, and then we could have an erotic adventure that would even make Bannon blush.
