Hey folks.

I was a Pathfinder supporter back when Paizo was still writing for 3.5. I fell in love with their Adventure Path idea and I ran the Savage Tides AP that ran in the final days of Dragon and Dungeon magazines. I subscribed for a couple of years to their products, going all the way to the first printing of the Pathfinder Beta. However, I had to break my subscriptions near the end of '09 due to money (although I wish I had figured a way to keep up with it after all this).

Anyway, there's about a one hundred page difference between editions. If anyone can tell me, would this difference be mostly fluff or crunch? I've been asked to join in a local Pathfinder game, and I'm wondering if I can get away with the info in the beta release or if I should bite the bullet and pick up the most current release instead. Not really trying to be cheap, but I want to make sure this is a long haul game before I invest a little more money. ^_^

There was a lot of crunch difference. The beta is a fair bit more different than 3.5 than the final rules ended up. The beta was to try out a wide variety of ideas and tweaks to see what worked and what didn't. In the end, Paizo opted to only include the tweaks and improvements that were really needed to clean up the rules to provide as much backwards compatibility as possible. The final rule set ended up really squeaky clean with very little errata between printings. The PDF is only $10 and if you pick up a print copy, try to get a 3rd or 4th printing (though even a 1st or 2nd printing is fine as there just isn't much in the way of clarifications due to the extensive 50000 person beta).

What Dave said: the beta is just that and is quite different than the final release. If you're just looking to play, the pdf is a bargain.

Thanks Dave. That's what I was looking for. Looks like I'll be paying a visit to my FLGS to pick up a copy. I'll probably pick up the PDF as well, but I do love to have a physical book in my hand to read while in bed at night. Nothing quite like the fresh smell of paper bending while I read. ^_^
